This video documents casting the base and lid. It includes making the form work, mixing the refractory, curing process and making the form to cast the inner chamber.
I plan to use the CNC and the aluminum foundry as a great 1-2 punch for making cool stuff!
and yes, plans and a detailed BOM are also in the works! :)

This is the best back yard foundry idea on youtube so far. Its not as big as some but there is no welding and all that kind of stuff. Looks cool too. Great idea. Great video. Thanks. Pretty sure this is the way ill go until I go to needing larger moulds. I would like to know where you got the keg also, was thinking of asking the local distributor if they had any failed ones maybe..

two questions, are the bolts in the lid and bottom to hold onto the refractory and is the liquid you mixed the refractory with water or some kind of binding agent like sodium silicate (water glass)? awesome to watch you make stuff man!

Hi there, great video. Just what I need to guide me through my build! Can I ask what it is you ran around the perimeter of the lid and top of the keg, and riveted.... as well as why you did it? Was it just to create a greater surface area for the two to meet in addition to strengthening the rims?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+Jonathan Wright This was 1" x 0.125" steel strap. This does a few things... Provides a mechanical attachment between keg and refractory. Evens up the cut edge of the keg for a good mate between the lid and body. Strengthens the lips of the shell. Excuse to use pop-rivets....

Why pour the base and wall of the furnace separate? Is there a reason why you didn't just use a small offset, or just put the bucket in after you had enough refractory in the bottom and then build up from there?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
Aside from the fact that I am mixing the refractory with a hoe and pouring 5 bags at once would have sucked... I liked the idea of the bore being a separate pour since this will be easy to replace if/when the time comes. It also allows for uneven expansion of the refractory. The other reason for the separation is that I planned on using the drain hole in the base to locate the bucket. This could have been done another way, but there is no reason I can think of to warrant a continuous pour. Harder to rod the concrete, harder to form, harder to replace if the time comes...
@Aquaserge
@Aquaserge 8 лет назад
+Brian Oltrogge Ok that makes sense. I was mostly curious if the seam between the base and the sides could cause a point of failure.

Where did you purchase the castable refractory?
@KRGraphicsCG
@KRGraphicsCG 7 лет назад
Digging the build man... is there an advantage to using rivets vs carriage bolts or was that personal preference? Your build looks SOOOOO good.
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 7 лет назад
+Kashif Riley Rivits are one of the cheapest, most fun to use fasteners. If you use carriage bolts, wrap the threads with tape so the don't cause the rim of your refractory to crack. But, again, rivits are way more fun...
@KRGraphicsCG
@KRGraphicsCG 7 лет назад
Brian Oltrogge They definitely are. And most of the tools in this video, I can get them at work. I'll most likely use thread locker on the carriage bolts. will you post a video on how you built the grabber for the crucible?

@LordAtrix
@LordAtrix 8 лет назад
you put a material around the orange bucket what was that? Also just to clarify you used 5x 50lb bags of refractory 3000f grade? did that leave enough to make the hole covers? So I have an idea how many bags did it take to fill the lid?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+LordAtrix The material around the bucked was flashing to raise the height of the cast. I had to get 5 bags, probably used 4.5 The lid and the bottom of the furnace took about 3/4 of a bag each
@Devi1D0g04

@@Grunblau Is that 5 10lbs for a total of 50lbs or 5 x 50lbs for a total of 250lbs?
@МаксимКраевский-ц1у
good afternoon. thank you for your video. please tell me what the propane consumption per melt?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+Максим Краевский hard to say... I usually do some melting of scrap while it is hot so the furnace is running for between 2-4 hours. I seem to get 2-4 melts per BBQ tank. Sometimes I use diesel... Should give you a basic idea.

@WarBerJr02
@WarBerJr02 8 лет назад
So, why didn't you use a vibration sander to eliminate the voids?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
You have to be careful vibrating refractory. You don't want all of the aggregate to settle to the bottom. It is better to rod the mix than to vibrate it in this case.

Brian, I just noticed, You don't weld? Or at least don't like to weld. With everything else you can do, why didn't you weld a frame into the lid to hold the refractory. I did that with mine. Not that your design isn't great. It is, its just an obvious and easy way to do it.

Way beyond what I am comfortable with... Steel melts at 2500-2750. This is about twice what I am melting aluminum at and at the stated limit of the refractory. I'll be doing some brass soon, but I'll leave steel/iron to the foundries!
