This video documents prepping the keg before casting the refractory. It includes cutting the keg, adding fasteners to help hold the refractory as well as inner rings around the rim to add strength as well as a mechanical hold for the cast.
I plan to use the CNC and the aluminum foundry as a great 1-2 punch for making cool stuff!
and yes, plans and a detailed BOM are also in the works! :)

Hey Justin- The rings serve three primary functions... level off an imperfect cut edge, provide extra support around the lip and give a mechanical hold for the refractory. Hope this helps!

When a welder wants to cut off a pipe and have it be a good right angle cut to the axis of the pipe, they use a roll of stiff paper that they warp around the pipe and make sure that the long edge , that goes around the circumference of the pipe meets itself. Then they just use a pencil/marker to follow that long edge and they have a guide for a good cut.

The wooden plug was not strong enough to keep my hole saw steady while drilling out the center of the top. So I made a 2 1/8” plate of 1/8” aluminum between the keg and the wood plug. This kept the center punch of my hole saw steady so that I got a clean cut.

I got me a keg just like yours today for 15 dollars US. & I'm going to copy your foundry. I've used oak wood with force air, in a 55 gallon drum then suspended a cut propane tank into it, then dipped out the aluminum it worked ok, but I did get a leak in my propane tank & lost 1/2 my aluminum into the fire. I want to make something that will be easier & funner & hotter. I have lots of things to do so I'm not sure if I can get it made soon, I hope so. Thanks for the uploads

If you do not have a drafting program - cut PVC pipe at 45 degs and trace on to paper. To get a very good cut on keg do not use side grinder. Put a thin grinding blade on a table saw. Block and use a cranking cargo strap. Once keg is place - move blade up - rotate - repeat I got a super straight cut

Just purchased the plans on your site. Not seeing much recent activity so I'm hoping you're still monitoring this. I am wanting to mimic your plans pretty close but had a few modifications. I've read all the Q/A's on here but still had a question or two: I am plan to add a second stainless steel wall (I happen to also have a 2nd smaller s.s. keg) with either the refractory or kao wool sandwiched between the keg's outer wall and this 2nd inner wall of stainless steel. Is this a mistake? I realized there may be a very good reason I've not seen anyone do this. My hope is it will get hotter, stay hot longer, keep the outer wall cooler and either protect me from the kao fibers or protect the refractory from cracking / crumbling. Also, could I seal off this inner layer (like a Stanley vacuum thermos) or would it build up pressure and need vented like a pressure cooker? Last, any changes you would make if you did a Mk II version? Thanks for all your videos, very impressed and inspired. (Once I knock out the keg, hoping to figure out your tong design)
@nic.h

Realise this is a pretty old question. One concern would be what you are planning on melting, the refactory material they are using looks to be rated to a pretty high temperature, the stainless will melt around 1500° C so depending on how hot you are planning on going may not be ideal. I'm guessing thermal expansion and contraction could be a problem as well with long term use

After watching your set of videos on the Keg foundry, I just ordered a set of your plans for it. I have a quick question, that I couldn't see in video #1. Did you rivet the 2 steel bands inside the top and bottom sections, "flush" with the edges..., or did you "off-set" them so that the top would slide down into the bottom section slightly (1/4" or so)? On my keg foundry, I'm at the point of cutting the top off. I've already drilled & bolted the top and bottom, b/c it seemed an essier way to do, for me. Looking forward to getting the plans for the torch! Thanks!
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 4 года назад
The rings are flush with the edges and provide a pretty flat mating interface vs cut edge of stainless. They also provide a physical ledge to hold in the refractory in the lid.

question. is there a reason you dindt use kaowool. i was thinking about doing your build, but using kaowool..and hingeing the top somehow. love this build.. huge fan.
@walter2990
@walter2990 2 года назад
I know your question was posted long ago, but thought I help out a little. I built my keg foundry using his version, except that I did use the kaowool on the sides and the lid. The idea of using it on the lid was a small "fail", it worked but because the wool is laying horizontally, and then covered with a layer of refractory cement, the heat and weight caused many cracks in the cement. Then it falls into the crucible. Not good! I've since removed the wool and poured it with cement, as per his video. (I recently watch another video that suggested cutting the wool into "wedge shapped" pieces, & turning the wool on it's side so as to use the natural strength of the wool. Then it's placed in the lid like spokes on a wheel, covered in Satanite refractory cement.) Kaowool will easily pull apart in one direction, but stays firmly in place when pulled in the other. I hope this isn't super confusing!

Nope… not on the lid… but I suspect the bolts that hold the handles on to the keg may have contributed to small fractures in the bore…. All good though.

so can i get a lits of parts and what kind of crucible would be good for this? in other videos i see people using inswool, you didn't. why?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 9 лет назад
+Jody Justus Soon when I get a tiny bit of linear time. Crucible is a #10 but I will likely get a #12 when I reorder. As far as the insulation goes... This furnace is hot enough to pour aluminum in about 30-45 minutes on propane. Less on oil and even less if I don't care to slowly raise the temperature. If this was a commercial furnace that would run all day, I'd care more about the efficiency and heat loss through the refractory to the skin. I have ceramic blanket that I chose not to use because I eventually came to the conclusion that I would rather have a small dia body and a large bore with 2-3" of solid refractory. I probably run it for 2-3 hours per fire-up to be a bit efficient about turning scrap into ingots. So a pour looks like this for me... 1 Load crucible with ingots or scrap and place in furnace 2 Heat crucible and furnace with lid off for a few minutes 3 Turn burner on full blast 4 Place lid 5 Place scrap or ingots on the lid 6 Note when more metal will fit in crucible and add 7 Prepare additives 8 Note when last chunk melted 9 Wait ~3 minutes 10 Remove dross 11 Add additives 12 Remove dross 13 Pour mold and/or ingots leaving a bit in the crucible if continuing to melt 14 Place crucible back in furnace (Repeat steps 4-14 until out of scrap) 15 Plug holes for cool down and cover with a steel tub if there is a chance of rain. The furnace will still be warm in the morning...

why did you plug the hole with the wooden hole cutout before cutting out the tap hole? Also why did you put screws into the lid like that?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+Christopher Jones The wooden plug is so that the hole saw has a center using the integrated drill bit. The screws in the lid provide a mechanical attachment of the refractory to the lid. Otherwise, it would just fall out since the refractory doesn't stick well to stainless steel. Especially since the skin expands at a different rate than the refractory when it heats up.
@ChristopherJones16
@ChristopherJones16 8 лет назад
Brian Oltrogge ok thought so.. just wanted to make sure.. just saw a guy on here who made one and thats exactly what happened to his... top fell right out. Good idea. Maybe some in the side couldnt hurt either?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+Christopher Jones leave them out of the side. If I was to do one thing differently, it would be to mask the screws that hold the handles. The keg skin grows by about 1/8 dia when hot. Might be what lead to my small cracks. The ring around the top gives you some mechanical attachment, but it isn't like you are going to flip the keg upside down. Gravity will hold it in the keg :)
@ChristopherJones16
@ChristopherJones16 8 лет назад
Brian Oltrogge what do you mean mask them? like cut them shorter or cover the ends in masking tape?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 лет назад
+Christopher Jones Yes. Make it easier for the skin to pull away when hot... Shorter fasteners covered with tape would do it!
