Drib, your fire extinguisher is too close to where the fire would be. It won't help you if it's engulfed in flames. Put it closer to the entrance of that room so you can grab it one the way into the room and also grab it and use it to escape the room if needed.
@heroflying
@heroflying 3 года назад
Two things that should be mentioned in this video but weren't: 1. REMOVE THE SEAL FROM AN AMMO CAN OR DRILL HOLES! Otherwise, you just made a shrapnel bomb should a LIPO fire break out inside of it. 2. People should understand that a fire extinguisher will NOT put out a LIPO fire. The VERY first thing you need to do is get the burning LIPO OUTSIDE ASAP. Drew, you might consider that - is this setup gonna allow you to easily toss the LIPO out if on fire. Having it charging in a container that you can grab and toss without burning yourself is critical. The fire extinguisher can only put out secondary fires caused by the LIPO fire, not the fire itself! Also, everyone, consider buying a Bat-Safe. They address all this. Sure, they're expensive, but they even filter soot out to prevent smoke damage.

When I was a kid, I got some place to (reluctantly) sell me a chunk of dry ice. I stored it in an ammo can, with the seal intact. It inflated like a balloon, but safely released what pressure it could not contain. I later joined the army, and quickly found that this kind of outcome is the result of billions of dollars of research and development. It's commonly referred to as "private-proofing". Also, those ammo cans are intended to keep ammo protected from war-related hardships, and that includes internal and external fires. You have an ammo dump, and the enemy is going to want to fling mortars at it. When a mortar hits your ammo dump, you don't want your ammo cans to become "shrapnel bombs" near your precious and indispensable supply personnel. Kinda explains how ammo cans were chosen for such a task. To add another bit of wisdom, a battery that goes off, closely resembles a chemical fire in a laboratory. Laboratory workers also have countless dollars (and traumatic experience) that have developed some of the best technology for dealing with arbitrary substances that have begun a runaway chemical reaction... It involves 2 metal buckets that are half-full of sand. When you have an emergency, there is no time to consider the various interactions of this and that fire suppression substances, so you just throw it into the sand bucket, and then dump the sand from the second bucket on top. The sand won't contain pressure, but they will baffle the hot gasses of reaction, reducing the likeliness of producing a flame jet (like the one shown in this video). Interestingly, the sand buckets and the ammo can are doing the same thing, which is to withstand and contain the reaction, while releasing the spent gasses in a controlled and safe-er manner.

Storing Lipos in an air tight metal container like the ammo box is a bad idea Drew whoever told you so. When a Lipo battery goes off the burning is very volatile (as you know) and the pressure builds up so fast it eventually can explode because the closed lid. The burning needs very small amount of oxygen the box just has enough to make the thing go off. I use three ammo boxes and the very first thing I did to drill vent holes on them after seeing what can happen when only one 1300mAh 4S goes off with the lid closed. We tried it in a garage (with opened garage door) with my pal and thankfully we could kick the whole thing out to the open air but trust me closing the lid was a bad thing. I can only imagine what could happen when there are 10-15 batteries closely laying inside the box. If there are vent holes the burning will generate massive amount of fumes and smoke but the pressure cannot build up and hopefully you have time to grab the thing and throw outside the house but without the holes the only thing you will notice is some hissing and a big bang with the rest of the Lipos flying everywhere some probably also on fire. Please drill some holes!

Given the number of batteries I have (and you have), there's really no difference between the teeny drone batteries we use and that beefy RC car pack. Once one goes off, they all do. I just got a two bat safes (one for charging and one for storage) and called it a day. $120 is a lot less than cleaning up a burnt corner, which is the least amount of damage these would give.

you *NEED* to remove the seal. The seal / ammo can are strong enough to be effectively air tight until they explode. not like it's going to detonate like a bomb... but it will send out a jet of flames from wherever it ruptures rather than just blowing out smoke from around the top if you remove the seal.

You can usually find used fire cabinets online for around $100 which is cheaper, and much bigger then a batt safe. Also, you should drill some holes in the top of the ammo boxes to release any pressure from the fire. You basically have a small bomb otherwise.

Aerogel is one answer to thermal insulation from a lipo fire. It's incredible stuff, do some RU-vid searches for aerogel. In it's standalone form it's quite delicate, but there is a version of it woven into fiberglass blankets. The price of it reflects its ability to withstand temperatures, high on both counts.

I store and transport my packs in plastic canisters that sunflower seeds come in. They fit 4s and 5s packs I use perfectly. They sit in a back pack great as well. Free hard cases resistive to punctures, keeps leads from shorting out. Free and recycles something that is normally waste. Also if you are worried about lipo fires build your upper box with the board you use but set a metal grate over top covered with 1 mil plastic or a trash bag for that matter then make a layer of play sand over that. When the plastic melts from fire the sand flows down and auto smothers the fire nearly instantly.

Le Drib, I spent under $15 last week on my new battery bunker. A few 8x8x8 concrete blocks with vertical holes in them, a few 2x8x16 solid blocks for a top and bottom. Blends right into my garage, and fire proof...charging happens in Lipo bags on porcelain coated metal trays, and gallon sized zip lock bags of sand within reach. Simple, cheap and effective protection for the home!

If you have an intense fire you might not be able to reach your fire extinguisher because of the heat. I'd place it a few feet further away from your charging station. Also, not sure of this, but if a battery starts to smoke and you have the fan going above it blowing the smoke away from the smoke detector, it could delay the smoke detector from triggering.

If you’re going to use an ammunition can to store your batteries you need to open the lid and trim out about a 1 inch section of the rubber gasket under the lid. If you do not and one of the batteries were to go off inside can you have now created basically a pipe bomb. The huge amount of pressure inside could explode the can and burn your house down. If you take a little piece of the gasket out it will vent the gas out but it will not let flames out.

Thanks. I must make something. For charging, I put the packs in an ammo box without lid. On top of the box is a plastic bag full of dry sand. The idea is that, if a pack catches fire, it will melt the bag and the sand will put out the fire. The Ammo box sits on my old lipo bags to keep the heat off my wooden laminate floor. I like the idea of metal shelves as charging on the floor is pretty pants. I just keep my lipos in a toolbox on the basis they won't combust if I'm not charging them. I guess there is always that small chance so I'll buy another couple of ammo boxes!

Pile of carbon Yeah, it’s mainly useful for 3D printers where cutting off the power can cut off heat that’s contributing to a fire. With Lipos, once one is lit it will keep going, but cutting off power might avoid other lipos that you’re parallel charging form going up immediately.

I prefer the insulated lipo bags over metal boxes if the concern is just fire hazard, because the insulation interferes with fire spread more than metal which conducts heat. Metal boxes are better protection from punctures which can also start lipo fires. A charging station on stone or concrete is likely ideal, because again stone is more likely to interfere with heat conduction. Metal (iron or steel based) and glass surfaces have good fire resistance, but be aware of nearby combustible objects, because these materials can conduct heat. Avoid storing the batteries in large bundles. Try to split the batteries among smaller lipo fire safe containers, because the increased use of fire resistant materials obstructs fire spread. As I understand lipo batteries, they produce their own oxygen, so if a fire happens you want to keep it away from other combustibles and extinguish with cooling agents. Fire blankets available at Home Depot should be effective. Water is likely good for isolated batteries, but water can be dangerous with chargers connected to AC power outlets. Sand should be good for controlling lipo fires. Avoid tightly sealed storage containers, because they can build pressure and explode possible spreading hot gases even more. Vented bags and boxes will more safely release pressure. See NFPA 855 for industrial level recommendations on battery storage. www.nfpa.org/codes-and-standards/all-codes-and-standards/list-of-codes-and-standards/detail?code=855 www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Resources/Emergency-Responders/High-risk-hazards/Energy-Storage-Systems

Very effective and low-cost solution. Just one thing: the fire extinguisher is too close to the "fire risk area" and you may not be able to get to if that area is engulfed.. You are assuming you catch the fire almost instantly ...just move it away (but still within easy reach). And make sure you have one rated for chemical fires... many households extinguishers are not, with the retardant spray being different for different types of accelerants.

It's always a good idea to set up some lipo bunker. But did you remove the rubber gasket from ammo box? In the case of battery fire ammo box would get pressurized making a granate. You can drill some holes for pressure to escape and direct fumes into the smoke sensor. You can also remove lid all together and put on top a bag of sand. The idea is that when the batteries catch fire plastic bag will melt and sand will fill the ammo box taking fire out. Also it looks like your metal shelf is painted and paint is flammable.

Keeping a burning lipo from setting your house on fire is obviously a good idea. But having recently seen an appartment that had a really minor fire accident I want to point out that the smoke alone can cause a lot of trouble. Everything will be covered in a thin film of bad smelling residue that you need to get rid of so you'll end up cleaning the floor, walls, ceiling and hundreds of objects that have been exposed. If at all possible storing lipos in a garage, shed or on a balcony or terrace is favourable.

You can find used safes on Craigslist for under $50 or if you want a lot of room pick up a fire proof gun safe then build sheet rock shelves to separate it in to multiple layers and drill a hole on the back to pass power through for charging and lightning and so if on does go off there is no pressure build up

I would imagine the 'build your own' are more capable but, is it possible to rebind with an rtf or btf? I can't find anything on it for the life of me except for Tello..

Hears another tip for you Have a per of ( Oven Gloves ) next to the charger, makes it quick and easy to pick up the lipo and drop it into a bucket of water / sand

I drilled a small hole through a huge cooking pot and run my charger leads into it. put a metal lid on it and viola... Lipo charging safe. but, good idea, I just went and got some pot holders from the kitchen.

Thanks to this and the "I'm quitting FPV" video i got a bat safe. The 90€ are way less than the potential damages that can be caused!

Maybe the fan Isn't great there it is potentially sucks bad fumes away so the smoke detector won’t work if the fan ist blowing air

I keep my lipos in the garage but in the winter I take them out and I leave them in the house and a storage mode and lipo fire-safe bags is it safe when the batteries or are in their storage mode to keep them in the house?
@wardope
@wardope 3 года назад
It's cool and all but you completely disregard the transfer of heat. between the Protection, the floor, and the wall. if you have an old Lipo in an ammo box. try to fire it up in the box and measure the outside temperature of the ammo box. more than enough to light anything next to it on fire. even the batteries stored in your other ammo boxes next to it. the setup you made right there is not at all safe!
@rasmus80g
@rasmus80g 3 года назад
Yes might give you a extra minute or so if in the room... But not safe by any means... The ammo can should have no seal and needs insulation.. even better some home made filter of stainless steel wool etc...

I never charge in the house and only store them there for the winter. A fire-proof box would be great for storage, too

Drib the firething does not help for lipos. I use batsafes for all my lipos. Also all my lipos are always in storage mode.

Never ever charge indoors ...never ....have a small metal pail with metal cover with wet sand inside. Will help to reduce heat as the lipo goes insane ... fireproof gloves. Expect every time you charge something will go bad. I absolutely hate lipo (had two bad fires). But I love FPV.

Good video, i keep saying im going to do something like that in my room where i charge at, I really need to. lot better then what you was doing for sure. I think i would seal all the parts where they meet just for more protection.. as you said we hope we never need to test if it works or not.

I know i'm late to this video and I hope you see this. I'll try to remember to post it on a newer video next time you upload just to hope it's more visible. But that smoke detector seems like it's in an ineffective spot, or more rather that fan seems like it might prevent the smoke detector from doing its job. How is the detector going to detect smoke if the fan is right in front of it pulling that air away from it? I suppose if smoke fills the top of the room it'll cycle through, but that seems like it's not a great situation to be in. This is all just speculation on my part though, I don't know enough about the fluid dynamics of air to really know. Just sketched me out seeing that.
