common Glass is composed of about 75% silica (SiO2) plus sodium oxide (Na2O) from soda ash, lime (CaO), and several minor additives. The most common constituent of sand in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings is silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the form of quartz.

People are disliking because they are so used to action videos, like they can't comprehend a video could have a totally relevant title that sounds exciting without being an action video. It's an educational video! Don't dislike just because you are too lazy to enjoy the science.

at 4:20 you show a Prince Rupert Drop under polarized light the "bubbles" are shown with dark lines around them. My question for MIT is : Are those really bubbles or are they under vacuum? basically you have a molten mass of glass that should be fined out (having no bubbles). when dropped in water the PRD contracts as said from the center that remains somewhat soft. Many of the bubbles in PRD are weird shapes pointed and flatish ,no where are they roundish as most bubbles in glass or other fluids. So picture this ;;the "bubbles" are formed like putting you hands together palm to palm and then moving you knuckles away from each other making a hole between your palms. Wouldn't this cause a vacuum and not create bubbles.? You can also get "bubbles" to form by gathering up some glass ,, blocking the form to make a round ball then blast one side with compressed air as the glass rapidly cools you can watch the voids form and get larger as you apply more air. i speak from 35 years of glass batching and glass manufacturing experience.

It's not ductility. Ductility is the ability to be drawn into a wire. Malleability is proper as it is the ability to formed into a shape without deformation or damage.

The stuff from around 2:00 about the Prince Rupert's Drop was WHOA amazing! but yes, title is misleading and while I wouldn't go so far as to call someone a "cunt" as other comments have, we really expected to see actual common SAND being refined and doped into consumer glass. (The info is Google-able, you wouldn't be blowing up any deep trade secrets)

Can you make a Prince Ruperts drop out of metal? or any other solid that can melted?
@jamestarrou3685
@jamestarrou3685 9 лет назад
I wouldn't believe so. As he explained in the video, atoms in metals behave differently than those in glass, and have a unique ability to rearrange it's structure to accommodate for stresses. I think the metal drop would just solidify into a whole piece, and the tail would either bend or just snap off.
@MauroTamm

@bladderskin4595
@bladderskin4595 9 лет назад
James Tarrou It would be impossible as the Rupert drop is a property of glass.
@lajoswinkler
@lajoswinkler 9 лет назад
mikemorr100 It is possible to get metallic glasses if you turn down the hot metal's temperature fast enough before the metallic lattice arrangement is made, but as these drops require slower core cooling, the amorphous property would be lost so I'd say it's impossible to do with metals. There is no reason why it shouldn't be possible with some other materials.
