Sooo I had a thought the other day... You know how the 2005 Christian Bale Batman's cape was made of a fibrous, meshy material which would become hard as steel when electricity was applied? Can that be replicated (or as close as) if you, say, combined Nitinol with Nichrome? Like a braid. Obviously it wouldn't be anywhere near as strong, but might yield interesting results. And we like interesting results.

You can use hot water to activate the SMA gently and evenly... For the training process: We found 500°C over ~15min to give good results. Any metal parts touching the SMA should be stainless; zinc plating seems to migrate into the Nitinol. The plaster idea is brilliant!

Thanks for introducing everyone to NiTinol (Nickel Titanium Naval Ordinance Laboratory). Irregular grain boundaries are one of the reasons for it's characteristics. The Japanese secured the patents from America over twenty years ago. They've used it to knit broken bones together, used it in dental implants, automatic louver springs for HVAC and the list goes on. The Navy started with CuNi and went from there back in the late 40's. There are several methods for cold working and heat treating if my memory serves me correctly.

The show with the hammer at the end gave me an idea for a nitinol timer: 1. Train nitinol wire to be a spring. 2. Hang a weight from nitinol wire. 3. Set up a button below the weight to run current through the wire for a set time. When the weight stretches the wire enough, it will depress the button, running current through the wire, raising it back up to its starting position. Simply record every time the button gets pressed. I'm not sure how you'd get the current to run long enough to raise it back up, but it would be interesting to see how the nitinol acts after repeated heating/stretching, as a function of how long it takes to push the button after a set time of heating.
@dwerg1

My dad had a patent a number of years ago to use this stuff in automotive electrical connectors. The idea is, if the connection isn't great and the current flow causes it to overheat (like they oft do), the NiTinol "tongue" or "finger" in the female end of the box-shaped (or cylindrical) connector that is gripping the male spade (or post) end would press HARDER because of the heat, providing a better connection, and (hopefully) preventing thermal run-away. The connector itself wouldn't be made of this stuff, but utilized as part of the spring mechanism.
@dustysparks
@dustysparks 5 лет назад
This had the benefit over traditional bi-metallic strips in that it wouldn't pull away if the connector got very cold (any winter's night), the extra spring action would only activate as a result of the unwanted heat.

Great video! I've thought if this also might be possible using an electrical current, e.g. encase the shaped wire in clay or plaster/sand, and apply a voltage that would heat the wire. That should be easier than using an oven (for most of us), and you could probably measure the temperature based on the electrial resistance?

First time saw that on you're channel a while back I wondered how it was done ... Nice thanks for the ' reveal' .. And very surprised it lifted the hammer.

what a lot of people don't know is those flexon glasses use a different formulation of NiTinol, with the memory point below freezing and the memory point still quite high. NiTinol is a super-elastic metal.

skyliner_369 Yeap, you just need to increase the %Nickel in the alloy to lower the transformation temp.

I have been subscribed to your channel for over a year now, i love what youre doing here so very much. I wish youtube would stop their bs i didnt even get a notification for this. I never get them for codys channel. Why is youtube censoring actual educational videos, but allowing all this other nonsense? Wtf RU-vid ?

I grind niti wires at work, when theyre down to about .02" or less in diameter you can make a loop, pinch it in your fingers, and full fast on both ends and it will snap in half. Cant do the same with stainless steel wires, when theyre down to about .005", you can stretch them about 15% in length like a rubber band. It also wears down our machines about 7x faster than steel.

Perhaps it would be worth making a template of nails hammered into a board in the shape you want and winding the nitinol around it, then applying the torch directly. If that worked ok it would be a lot less bother than curing the plaster & heating in a furnace...
