When you’re out on the river, there are some trips where nothing goes right. No matter what you rig up, the trout just won’t eat. You know the days - where the depth and weight of your nymphs both seem right on and your drifts are clean… but even your confidence flies won’t produce.
Enter the Fire Starter. A heavy perdigon with a slender profile and an oversized bead, the Fire Starter is an excellent fly to get things “heating up” during slow days on the water. The design is simple and doesn’t require a ton of materials to tie. The Fire Starter Perdigon features a unique mix of oranges and yellows in its palette - a color scheme that trout don’t always get to see. Plus, the body is a vibrant combination of UV resin and flash, creating a bug that really stands out in the water column. There’s nothing especially exceptional about this pattern... it just catches fish!
In this video, Umpqua Feather Merchants Signature Tyer and Anglers All resident tying expert Daryl Eakins takes us through the process of tying the Fire Starter Perdigon from start to finish. To make the most of this tutorial, use the timestamps below the fly recipe for navigating to the part of the tying process you'd like to see!
