Fire is very important in survival. Not only does it do the obvious by keeping you warm but it boosts your moral considerably. If you have ever been in a situation where you couldn't get a fire started and got yourself cold, wet or hungry with only food available that needs cooked, and then were able to finally get a fire going, you know exactly what I am talking about. I have been in this situation so I know the importance of fire. I have had Bic lighters and fancy rocket lighters fail on me. So when I am headed into the backcountry or during survival training, this fire kit is what I carry. On long treks I dont take both fire kits but I always, always, always have at least 4 ways to start a fire on me when I go out, in addition to knowing how to make and use a bow drill and/or a hand drill.
p.s. sorry for the odd movements of the camera, we were testing out some new equipment.
Thanks for watching!

Good information. This comment is for the other people reading comments for ideas. Like he stated blast matches can break since they are mechanical. For one arm applications you can stick your knife in something and use your one hand for the rod. Also you can prop your knife against a log with your foot and pull the rod across it. Hope this helps.

Very cool fire kit creations. Useful info. Other thing about the storm matches are it may go burning but doesn't mean you have a on going flame in windy conditions. I tend to modify matches to burn longer. TFS ill channel support ... " C.R.:

Bic, quality matches, flint & steel is all I've ever used in 50yrs. The most important part of building a fire is to have all your fuel prepared before you strike a light

All I carry with me these days is a Bic and a ferro rod. I carry cotton balls and Vaseline for tinder in an emergency, but primarily a harvest natural materials off the land. Process process process. Do you mean flint and steel or do you mean a ferro cerium rod? They are not the same thing

I mean flint and steel not ferro rod. I've been a bushman and survivvorlist for 40yrs before u tube made it popular. And must say you guys carry way to much weight.

@@paulmitchell7816 perhaps. But a ferro rod weighs the same, if not less than flint and steel, and is highly more effective. Knowing how to use flint and steel is definitely a great thing though.

It works for me . Although I'd like to try some strike anywhere matches and those trick birthday candles unfortunately not available in Australia. I like how you I have back up sources for bad weather. where I live, it's mostly dry, warm to hot. Little rain and I've never seen snow

@@paulmitchell7816 strike anywhere matches are nice but the windproof waterproof matches are far superior in bad weather. I typically don’t carry matches whatsoever but if I did carry matches, I would carry the windproof waterproof matches. I do show my students how they work. They are rather impressive.

Lets all admit that firemaking has many and various forms of combustion. What is not available, and should be manufactured is a shock-compression and combustible material, saturated inside a cotton mop dreadlock, jute, or the Canadian fatrope idea. All we need then (with waterproofing) is to just use a striking instrument like 2 rocks, and smash the cord, and it lights, and runs (like a dynamite fuse wire). Then no matter the weather, climate, outside temperature, wet/dry/soaked, ... just impacting the true firecord and we would have flame and fire.
