How to Start a Fire. Yep, there are ten thousand different techniques and they all work; some better than others. So, which technique to use? Go to a TRUE subject matter expert.
This week's video, we had the pleasure of filming with Cody Lundin. Many of you many recognize Cody from his survival TV series on Discovery Channel. The guy is truly a master of his craft.
Cody and Imri hit it off as friends a while back, and Cody agreed to film a couple videos for Tactical Rifleman. Understand he doesn't do this video stuff anymore. So, we are honored to have him select Tactical Rifleman to showcase some of his favorite skills.
Cody is a natural instructor and true master of primitive survival skills. If you want to take classes with Cody, you can sign up for his Aboriginal Living Skills School, at www.codylundin...
We hope you enjoy the video. Please let us know if you want us to invite Cody back. We are already jumping for the chance. TR

So great to see Cody Lundin again. One of the very few real survival experts to ever appear on a tv show.
@Big-Government-Is-The-Problem
all of the tv shows had real survival experts, even Bear Grylls. just because aspects of a show are faked to make it more interesting for better ratings like sleeping inside of a dead camel, that doesnt mean he doesnt have real survival skill. the issue is just the varying levels of suffering each survivalist decided to go through on their TV show, les stroud being the most extreme example back in the day, but now that title goes to the naked and afraid XL people who spend 60 days out there rather than 7. assuming that show is legit and they are not given food/water daily. Alone is also another example of a show where people survive or 100 days.

For making such a serious video, you need another cameraman. He thinks the faces of people talking are more important than what you're doing with or what's in your hands and what you're doing with it. I think I have to watch the last part about using the starting the spark tool because I couldn't get a clear picture 😕

Definitely a ocean of difference between us in the tacticle, minuteman, law enforcement and military community as Cadre and students. Much more low speed
@Big-Government-Is-The-Problem
yeah there is no reason that should have taken more than 5-10 minutes, and he didnt even show how to build a proper fire lay with small medium and large sticks, sticks placed on the ground as a baseboard to protect against the wet ground etc. the info was good but way to drawn out. i suspect the vast majority of people didnt make it all the way to the end of the video. now adays with tik tok and youtube shorts peoples attention span is shorter than ever and most people wont sit for an hour to learn something that actually could be explained in a 1 minute RU-vid short video. it was an interesting video though i guess.

Having magnesium and a striker but wasting time to make neolithic land art is like having a working truck but somehow feel the need to hitch a horse to it. Just take the truck or the horse, but don't take both. You etheir make a magnesium fire route, or a friction fire route, not both. The whole point of having a magnesium starter is to get a burn immediately without having to worry about getting a PhD in paleo-ethnobotanics.

That Dude still isn't wearing shoes? 🤔 Why I Love Cody ❤ The Unaired Scenario (The arrival of the downfall of Dual Survival) (Disclaimer: Not exactly verbatim) Joe: "Hold up Cody!" Cody: "What is it Joe!" Joe: "Well first off, you aren't wearing any shoes Cody! But anyways. Do you see those two trees up ahead?" Cody: "Which two? There's a bunch Joe." Joe: "You don't see that!?" Cody: "What?" Joe: "Look about 40 meters in between those two trees on the ground!" Cody: "Oh that." Joe: "You see it Now.. Right!?" Cody: "Well.. if it's the same thing I'm seeing Joe.. it looks like a pile of dirt." Joe: "Cody! That's an Ant Pile!" Cody: "Oh.ok.. What about it?" (Joe now explains to the cameraman) Joe: "When I was in Special Forces you are taught to always keep your head on a swivel. If you come across an Ant Pile of that magnitude in size, you Do NOT turn your back on it. And in Special Forces training, when you come across something that Lethal, you Do Not approach it.. at all, PERIOD! In Special Forces, you are taught that an Ant Pile just doesn't have Not One or Two Ants ready to Ambush you, there are literally a lot. And in Special Forces, when just One Ant picks up on your scent, it lets all the other Ants know that you are around. And in Special Forces, you are taught that when those Ants realize that you are around, even if it's 40 meters away, you are Now compromised. I'll be Damned if I am going to allow my partner or myself to face the danger of a massive horde of Ants to Ambush me or my shoeless partner. PERIOD!" Joe: "What about it!? Cody, you are out here with No shoes on and an Ant Pile that big is literally 40 meters away. I am Not turning my back on that Ant Pile!" Cody: "Joe, let's just keep going and just walk around the Ant Pile and find a place to build a shelter and make a fire and try to find some water and food." Joe: "Are You kidding me Cody!? No Cody, I'm going to low crawl off to the left and flank that Ant Pile and Utterly Destroy that threat!" Cody: "Do what?" (Again, Joe talks to the cameraman) Joe: "You see, that's what I'm talking about. Cody doesn't understand that I am Special Forces with skills that HE doesn't have. And Cody is out here with No shoes on with a freaking Ant Pile right in the path of our mission target. If I allow my partner to get near that Ant Pile with No shoes on, it's game over. PERIOD!" Cody: "Joe, I've dealt with many Ant Piles over the years, beginning when I was a child. If you don't bother them, they won't bother you." (Again Joe talks to the cameraman) Joe: "In Special Forces training, you are shown a Documentary on how dangerous Ants can be. It's called.. Attack Of The Killer Ants. Ants are nothing to take lightly. I've seen the destruction of what Ants can do." Joe: "Cody! If you aren't going to help me get rid of this threat, just move back about 80 meters or so. I'll handle this." Cody: "Okay Joe. Well, when you feel that your life isn't in any more danger, I'll be in the shelter I'll build sitting next to the fire I rubbed two sticks together and you can rehydrate and fill up on some calories from the food and water that I gathered for you.. I mean us." (Joe finally arrives at the shelter) Joe: "I had to call in an airstrike Cody." Cody: "Why?" Joe: "There were just too many Ants to flank." Cody: 🤔 Joe: "If only I had a magnifying 🔍 glass..." Cody: "It was just an Ant Pile Joe." Joe: "Exactly Cody! ... WAS.. an Ant Pile... 🐜... "

I really like Cody and his style and he has my complete respect. However, the way he shows how to make a fire here does not meet with my approval. With such a great tinder nest made of such good material, two or three strong strikes with the ferro rod are enough and the thing burns. But if Cody wanted to show how to start a fire from a small piece of ember in a tinder nest by blowing, then fire by friction or flint and steel would have been the better method.

Cody Lundin is a real pro, not just showing off, but understanding the physics behind it - every word he says is pure gold. I like his way of thinking too, watched several episodes of 'Dual Survival' with Dave Canterbury - while Dave tried to fight nature, Cody adapted and used it to his advantage, based on his exceptional knowledge. As a striker I preferred a worn out small file, that I ground to perfect 90° on all sides - they are much harder than any saw blade and don't wear down as fast. As a more expensive approach I bought a set of two hard-metal (Tungsten Carbide) planing blades, put a 90° on it with a diamond disc and now have a couple of strikers/scrapers that will keep crisp edges for the rest of my life. Only downside: can't get a hole in it, so I made notches and put a loop of Kevlar-cord around it with a constrictor knot to hang it - makes wonderful medium to fine shavings from dry wood too, according to the pressure applied.
