Zane has absolutely the best instructional videos on the web. He's got a great delivery and honest tips. I've shared these with friends many times. I'm glad to see more content lately while he has the time. Hopefully he'll make it to Pennsylvania someday for a clinic.

Love it! When I started PB a year ago all I heard was don't move off the NVZ line, and soften the hard drive to dink back into the NVZ and get into a dinking battle. No element of surprise, no variation, no alternatives, just a cookie cutter approach to PB. I never listened, and it irritated my dubs partners. But then paddles got more powerful, and technique started to change, and standing off the NVZ, when appropriate, and countering with harder balls, started winning me lots of matches. Moved me from 0 to 4.5 Dubs and Open singles player. Bottom line, I couldn't agree more with this incredibly sage and insightful advice from an active touring pro. I'm also a firm believer in the "Battering Ram" which is drive repeatedly at the weaker player until you break through. Does it work 100%, no, but it really does work. Also, drive-n-drop a la Staksrud and Tellez is a gem. Why drop from the baseline when you can drop from mid court forward. Everything is always going to depend on your opponents' strengths and weaknesses, but go in with a philosophy, and most of all ADAPT, IMPROVISE, and OVERCOME! Then fire your coach when they aren't giving you alternatives when your current game plan is not working!

Zane, you are the only coach I have ever had, aside from basic tips from friends my first time playing. When are you coming back to Wisconsin? My wife and I did a clinic two summers ago with Zane in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and it was excellent. I highly recommend his clinics.

So many guys are saying that they are "coaches" and they know absolutely nothing about teaching someone the game. I don't know if there is a legitimate certification for this but most of these young guys, and some old guys, are a joke. No mans land should be practiced regularly in drills for sure 100%. My coach fires balls at my feet so I must get better at those shots. Zane is it right on the money again!

ZN, thank you for putting out this information. Hopefully, the pb community can start to have a paradigm shift on what to consider as sound fundamentals. Next generation pickling!

I have fired a coach who calls it No Mans Land, which is old school, and is now the land of opportunity, or the transition zone; but I would give you a pass!

Good advice, mostly, but I really hope certain friends of mine don't watch this. I have some friends who constantly miss overhead opportunities because they back off from the kitchen line too readily. I tell them not to back off from the kitchen unless you absolutely have to, and they always seem to concoct a reason why they needed to, when they really shouldn't have. I expect to have this video thrown in my face, making it even more difficult to get people to play the kitchen.

My favourite one that people say is don’t back off the kitchen line. This forces us to short hop a lot of balls which is WRONG! Thanks for the good tips here! 🎉

My first instructor told me to soften the ball off the bangers. It worked ... about 25% of the time. And I have very "good hands." All good cautions, Zane. Thanks!

6:50 completely agree... on average, pros miss less than 1% of their serves. But if you look at two of the most feared servers on tour, you'll see Ben misses 2.1% of his serves, and Dekel misses 3.2% of his serves. Those error rates are even higher than your average 5.0 player! (1.8%)
@HM-gm1kn
@HM-gm1kn 8 месяцев назад
If you're under 3.5, a lot of these things make complete sense to teach. You can't just emulate the pros right away and there is a meta of layering skills over time. Even in motor development, you can't just throw a ball perfectly right away, but overtime you incorporate and change parts to finalize and optimize the throw. Often times, coaches use over simplification rather than explaining this before hand which can be problematic but the idea is still there.

No Man's Land. This isn't tennis. I think it's important to say transition zone for pickleball, as you emphasized that you need to move back and forth as needed.

If I play against two male players (I am female) who can hit the ball like a rocket and anywhere they want on the court, I am not going to be able to beat them with a counter power play because I don’t have their strength in my shots, I want to push them to sink so it levels the playing field. It you 7:48 think this is wrong, I would love a video on how to beat two players who out power you with being aggressive back.
@JournaloftheScotts
@JournaloftheScotts 8 месяцев назад
You don't need strength to counter power play. You are using the opponents power against them vs trying to deaden the shot as a drop. I've been able to get better at counter blocking it going middle or you angle it. It's anything better than popping it up which can happen if you are trying to always dink on power shots. Takes some time to get used to handling the pace. Players tend to get jumpy.

Agree that Zane is the best but I’m guessing he doesn’t coach many 1.5 or 2.0 players. The strategy of Pickleball changes at different levels and at the 2.0 level just getting your serve in is appropriate. All his comments in this video are appropriate for 4.0 players.

I would think it’s best to always strive for the best techniques otherwise you’ll groom and ingrain the bad. Pay your dues until things start paying off especially if you plan play for a lifetime. So you get pickled for a long time it’s worth it. IMO
