Cool comparison Mart! They both seemed to work pretty good to me. Probably, if you were only tending to one fire, either box would do just fine...trying to keep two going would be a job for anybody!!! Nice job!!!
I am using the new 5” Folding Firebox Stove with side feeding holes. I purchased the Stanley cook set. I use this cook combo for camping and whenever I need an emergency back up at home. Came in handy during a recent ice storm.
Firebox is awesome. I've had it for about 2 years and just ordered a nano for solo trips. I've even used it to create an oven with a Billy pot and bake some yum yums. The key is to use Swedish torch method for a long burn. Also, feeding wood from the bottom through the holes is much easier. Secondly, Stanley anything adventure is great. Some are a bit heavier than the much more expensive titanium post and such but I would recommend any Stanley pot or pan to anyone, they are all great. Thanks for the video.
Yep and it is indeed well worth the money too...I gave mine to EDC Adventures at our local BushCraft Meet up this past October ... The Voo 2 as we called it. And, I know he will really enjoy it as I am sure you will too...
If you pay attention to how the Firebox Stove comes when new, you will see that the ash pan snaps across the folded stove, and the Firesticks (cross pieces) slide in and lock into place, making it a much more compact unit to stow into the pouch. Agree with others, use the Swedish Fire Torch method, or use charcoal, or a Trangia alcohol stove fits (nested inside), or solid fuel tabs laid onto the ash pan in a higher location... you have great versatility with the Firebox Stove. The tighter seal of lid for the MSR would explain the faster boil, more heat retained, the Stanley's holes in the lid (to strain off water) would cause that variance between them.
I just aquired firebox stove Gen 2. Got all accessories for it as a Christmas gift. I love it. The trick to it is, pre load it with some pretty big chunks of wood and fill in a lot of the space with small stuff or do a sweedish fire torch configuration in it. It burns a long time like this and you do not have to feed it. Pluse it is so versatile with the accessories, it is like having a multitool stove as one person put it. Unlimited in your imagination with that stove. Plus is is so easy to set up. Maybe try it that way Mr. Mark, see how you like then. It must be so hot where you live
I have the 1st get folding firebox w/ the pot ring attachment and the stanley prep cook set. I also have a titanium alcohol burner that fits into and works perfectly with the folding firebox. I love this set up! Great video!
I recently purchased a MSR pot and by slightly adjusting the metal pieces on the side that hold the handle the problem of handle collapse was solved. The handle still functions as designed. Took all of about 10 seconds to make this minor adjustment. Btw, the lid is not meant to be used bare handed. It is designed to be used with a utensil, stick, knife or whatever is available. The MSR is good quality compared to the junk Stanley is selling with the plastic tab that melts. Not being critical just providing additional info. Good vid showing pros and cons of stoves.
The gen 2 firebox now has large fuel feed openings on two sides so that you can cross the ends of sticks over each other and get some good vortex action. That, plus the ease of setting up, makes it my choice.
wow now that is cool...I didn't drill or cut any holes in this one because it is now a classic and a collector's item...lol...but thanks a many for telling me that...now I gotta see it on the Tubes to see that vortex action!...that would be awesome of the ness...
I now hesitate on actually doing the mod because even though it is difficult to feed without removing the pot, it does actually conserve the wood longer and the fire is not on extreme high heat...I would say that as it stands, the Fire Box is a low to medium stove when it comes to actual cooking and that is a GREAT thing...
I'm glad you stopped by Brother...and sorry for the late reply, I'm trying to catch up on a few comments....whew! this You Tube Buisness sure does make the finger tips sore trying to reply on the comments...lol.
The current firebox has the side feed holes that you like. But if you set it up in the swedish fire torch method you won't have to be constantly feeding it sticks. With beech wood I get about an hour burn before I need to feed it more wood. The are many youtube videos on this with the firebox stove. Good Luck.
Yeah, I love that feature, the side feed on the second generation is what convinced me to buy it, given it's flex fuel too makes it a great companion. I saw a comparison of the Swedish fire torch vs side feed and it seemed side feed was more efficient and controllable, but the fire torch was far less hassle and became charcoal for grilling far sooner. Many other fueling methods however for anyone to use. Can't wait for mine to arrive.
Just the right video that I needed to see this morning. I already have the MSR pot and two smaller Stanley Adventure kits. There is a special at my local store this morning so I'm going to order this larger Stanley pot
Good Test Brother Mart. I am not so much about head to head teats...I am more impressed by the impressions of someone using something for the first time!! Great Review!!
The generation 2 folding firebox stove has two small feed ports at offset heights which allow you to cross sticks as you feed them in, allowing a better burn where they cross. Also , if you check their website, you can do a modified Sweedish fire torch set up which will give a longer burn time. You could possibly modify the Gen 1 stove and add the Gen 2 style feed ports.
Hello Mam land 121 nice video. I have a question for you if you don't mind me asking. What video editing do you use. It has been so long that the one I was using is no longer available. I have about 4 video but I need to edit them.
The Firebox will last a life time if looked after and is way more versatile. That other tin thing will last about 15 mins or until you try to assemble it with frozen fingers and stomp on it in frustration (speaking from experience). If you want a cheap folding stove go for the Lixada 5” stove with hinges. 😉🏴
Thanks Brother...I really am proud to own all this equipment. Makes cooking a lot more fun...well cooking is fun anywys but you know what I mean...Boys with Man Toys....lol.
Good show and tell video, Mart. I don't own either of those stoves. I think I'll stick with my Bushcraft Essentials XL Bushbox. It's a beast, and it's served me well the few times I've used it so far. As far as the pots, I have owned a couple of the MSR Seagull pot for the last five years. At first I questioned the stability of its handle too, but I can honestly say that it has never failed on me. It's a great little pot imo.
and Brother...I believe you are right...it's like when I first got my Stainless Steel Ozark Trails cup...the odd shape handle felt very awkward to me...but now having it over a year now and using it EVERY DAY at work drinking coffee, I love the darn handle...and an actual porcelain coffee cup now feels awkward...lol.
The part of the firebox you were goiing to attack with the Dremel is a special expansion plate designed to keep the stove form warping. The new generation Firebox has Rocket stove type feed ports as well.
I have the 1200 & 1600 MSRs, I like them the best, I like Being able to Lock Items in them in my Pack, I also have the Pathfinder Bottle Kit with Fish Mouth Spreader they use to hand the Bottle and Cup, Which also can Lock into the MSR pot lid and you can use it as a Small Frying Pan, I also have seen One guy Hang a wire between the Pot handle and the Latch so its in a Triangle above pot to Hand it, (Ive yet to make the wire yet, but I will), you can also Cut a small wood Handle to lift the MSR lid I don't use Camp Stoves but I agree, the fire box needs a Feed Hole in the side
Yes Sir Brother...i have a wire set I made to use for hanging all my pots above a campfire...yet I prefer the Cookie Cooling Rack to use as a grill to actually give me a surface area to cook on and more than one pot instead of one pot that hangs...I know...it's personal preference but it's like hammock vs tent camping...lol. I do absolutely love the MSR cook pot...it's solid locking ability secures anything you put in there...and the Stanley...well once you over pack it slightly, will also lock...I wish there was a merger of the two pots to put all the PROs together...I am still pondering whether or not to cut that hole in the Fire Box...but have severe reservations due to the fact that it is now a collectors item because the generation 2 has a feed port...OH the dilemma...If Fire Box would only send me one to show and tell...well I would keep it and tell...lol.
Gen 2 Looks Like it just has a few Larger Holes to put fire wood in, but not like Free Soldiers Huge hole, I would Rather just Cut a Gen 1 Fire Box, then Buy a Small Hinge & Braze the cut out piece as a Door would be cool ... I like the Hinged Box Idea better, because if you Loose 1 side of the Free Soldier and its Junk after that. and the cut outs on the stove like the cheese Grader, Nut/Bolt Holes, Ruler etc are Gimmicks, cant grade cheese with a burned up/dirty stove , I might use it to help make fire starter materials but just as easy with back of my Knife.
I think pots and stoves like in this video are all credited to their talents...as like people... everyone has a few shortcomings....but with a little practice and careful familiarization...these items are becoming Great Friends...like folks are to me. Thank you Brother.
Just found your channel fun and lots of info thanks I need one of these for when I go kayaking Kinda wondered what the difference was now I know and knowing is half the battle
I don't like the MSR because of the handle and the Free Soldier is too open. I would do like you suggested and open the Firebox just enough to feed.Talking about feeding, cook the boy some more eggs!
Seems like every camp pot is a compromise vs. a proper kitchen pot. Why can't I have a fat, solid handle and a lid that stays locked firmly on? Both these pots seem great but both have flaws, too. Thanks for the vid, very helpful!
You mean you like the Free Soldier stove but the MSR cook pot lid? I would have to agree Brother...lids in the sticks are tricky especially over a well endowed camp fire...even handles are tricky to grab in that situation...lol.
It appears you were not using the fire sticks to rest the pot on the Firebox. I’ve never had an issue with feeding the Firebox from the top or through the two side ports, which work well.
Its a toss up I have to say. I would be right proud to own either one of these stoves. The days of a traditional grate over a fire is still valid, But these stoves are becoming better and better brother. But Before Bluefin begins bartering bargains, Ben better blast beyond brackish bayous baking buttered Blueberry buns. Bravo buddy bravo. :)
I love a simple grate over the fire...as a matter of fact...I have one always in my back pack as this video shows, you just cant beat simplicity... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3WC1cSkVIbQ.html
One additional difference between the two stoves is how sturdy they are or aren't. The owner of firebox stoves has a video out where he stacks cast iron dutch ovens on the folding firebox stove...like 4 to 5 of them, full of water to boot! I would not suggest doing that with most other stoves. Although the sturdier and heavier stove may be good for camping as opposed to back packing. But then there is the Firebox Nano(generation 2). Ease of set up is worth gold in the field when you're cold and shivering and need a fire NOW. Another stove you may wish to try is the Lixada gassifier type stove. It is a $20 Chinese knock off of the Silverfire Scout stove and is designed to fit inside a 750 ml MSR pot. When I was a teenager I was helping with yard work on a Saturday afternoon while my dad was assembling a new grill. After 30 minutes or so I heard him laugh, then he was done a couple of minutes later. I asked him what he was laughing at. He brought me a piece of paper that was in the box with the new grill. It said "when all else fails, read the instructions!" He said "if I'd done that sooner I'd have been finished 20 minutes ago! Reading the instructions or watching the manufacturers videos would be helpful in the case of the firebox stove. He usually gives the reasons why it's best to do some things in a very specific way, or why something is made a certain way, and the engineering behind it.
I have come to love this stove after using it multiple times...it's heavy but then again I'm a car camper mostly and the darn thing hasn't let me down yet for a first generation stove...I actually gave the free soldier away...lol.
Yes sir of the Brother Hood...lol. They are both fine working pieces of kit...and that Gasifier is one I like to help reduce the Black on my Pack...lol.
I like that the Free Soldier has few parts and no hinges, and a nice open side, but I worry that would make controlling the fire in windy places harder, also how strong is the steel, ManLand121, do you think the Free Soldier's construction hooks are in danger of bending in from impact and making it hard to assemble? Thanks. o/
The MSR has that raised bottom, if you fry steak or pieces of chicken they don't cook evenly, it's a pain to keep stirring so it cooks even. I'll take a flat bottom pot.
I love them simple delicacies...they have their own package and actually carry quite well without refrigeration when not store bought...alas these were store bought but that can be fixed too...
Not owning any of that stuff I would agree cut the side out of the firebox (easier access and more breathing room for fire), leave the MSR pot home ( last thing anyone needs is a 1rst degree burn in woods). My opinion based on this video. Oh Yeah boil the eggs before going out, lol
Boil the Eggs before their time??? OH NO! then what can I show on the You Tubes?...lol. But a wise man once said..."A Boiled Egg is safer in the Back Pack than a Raw Gooey Oozy Egg"...lol.
I love this video brother! I have no criticism at all, since I don't measure water too often, or cook in milliliters! Lol! I get it! Just two cool pots, two cool stoves and a few differences. This isn't a Hiram Cook scientific test. I seriously enjoyed this Mart!
I got it all figured out now...I'll just set my house stove with oven in the Blazer and when I get to the campsite, I'll plug it in an Oak Tree that has been hit by lightening...lol. Hey that might actually work....lol.
Very cool video Mart. Always a good laugh to be had but also a very interesting demo! There is of course a feed port on the gen2 firebox, two in fact, and that helps a lot. I find that if there is too much air getting in Mike the massive feed door that the free soldier offers, yes you'll get a quicker blaze, but then that becomes The problem because you're focusing more on constantly feeding the stove rather than cooking on the stove which the firebox allows you to do by burning a bit slower. But that is just my opinion buddy. And I'm sorry the bag has torn like that. Great video though brother. Awesome egg boil! Lol Be well Craig
That is precisely what I have discovered With the Freesoldier...it kept burning up the wood fastly and huge flames while the Firebox had a steady burn with the pot on top....I think I said that half way thru the video about having trouble keeping the Soldier goin...that constant feed of wood was a bit distracting...lol. But hey don't sweat the corner pieces of the firebox pouch..I'm gonna give it an inside patch job...lol.
I'm gonna give this a go for sure come Thanks Giving...lol. Last year I did a version of that on You Tube but it was actually a Cornish Hen and the video was shot in the apartment...but on all my camping gear.
Do not cut into the Firebox, those side panel cut-outs are expansion plates so the firebox does not warp. Have a look at the new design Firebox for bottom feeding and then cut out your feed hole according to the new design.
I guess the Free Soldier has some cool features, however, a big part for me is my camp stove having some kind of I guess top bracket fort my pot to sit, not everyone's camp pot is big enough to sit on top without a brace for it so that cancels it for me☹
That's right Brother Dean...I have a few pots on the low budget end that have no locking mechanisms at all and they are dangerous to handle if not paying attention.
The dummy from mainland did not use the side feed hole to add sticks to the firebox like he did on the solider!! I really like my firebox , for a better learning experience go the the Firefox RU-vid it’s better than mainland he treats you like a dummy!🤨
Thak ya Grumpy...and you can bet that I will have these two pots and stoves as well as my Ikea at the Voo 2 for sure...them Frog Legs are gonna get a triple Fry...lol.
Grumpy Guy I don't think she did ... as a matter of fact I didn't see it either...let me put my shoes on and run on over to your house to see the latest Broadcast from "TGN" The Grumpy Network...lol.
well done!! didn't seem one sided at all and goods and bads both ways really....I have been looking at the MSR pot for a while but I really want to get me a zebra 12cm pot next! I think maybe you should do a giveaway on a 12 cm zebra and I should win the giveaway.....sound like a good idea???
Oh Nooooooo! it's right truthfully the reverse...lol. I have been drooling over the Zebra for four years now, ever since I first saw it. And somehow another I shall get one either by luck, magic, or just plain green backs...and them greens stop growing a long time ago for me...lol.
See steves youtube channel and see both the 3 inch nano and 5 inch firebox cook for 45 mins and longer without being tended to. I have both and they are amazingly versatile and bomb proof. hope this helps.
Also, I am a big fan of the molle system and there is a molle pouch that fits the Firebox perfectly. Makes it easy to carry strapped to a bugout bag. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KB84KNE/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This guy doesn't have a clue! That Firefox is a waste because you cant feed it easily. The Stanley pot is safe around the campfire. If the lid moving is freaking someone out, then they have troubles.
Hey if you do then let me know...so I can add it to the Egg Challenge I have here as a play list...just mention in the video it's for ManLand...lol. that is if you do videos.
well I actually did but edited that out of the video....but it was not really about a boil time here...just the technique of the stoves vs what the owner is used to using I suppose. all 4 items are good products once you get familiar with them.
Hi there my friend, I prefer the Firebox as apposed to the other one, I saw that your firebox cover is just about had it, have a word with Robert (bluegrassbushcraft) as I made him a leather pouch to hold his Firebox stove in, and if you would like me to make you one (F.O.C.) I am prepared to do that, Robert has my address, so just let him or me know, take care my friend. ATB Ray
I think a more accurate comparison would have been to use the fire box gen2, nonetheless, I will take this info into consideration when making my purchase think you!!
First of all, there is no 1200 ml MSR Stowaway Pot. There are only 4 sizes: 475 ml, 775 ml, 1.1 L, & 1.6 L. You probably have the 1.1. Secondly, in a head to head competition, you put the Folding Firebox Stove at a disadvantage by not utilizing the ash pan under the burn chamber. It holds hot coals that radiate back to aid the burn. I know that crappy Free Soldier doesn't have an ash pan, but that's not Firebox's fault! Please show the real difference between these two. And "barely enough to get the Stanley pot on the Firebox"? REALLY? That's what those firesticks (which you chose not to use) are for. It will accommodate ANY size pot!
Chill Man I think that grown adults can figure most of this stuff out...learn more about me before you share your personality. If you thought that this was a real competition in any way...you missed the whole point of a side by side comparison and performance...and I did mention the cross members...and it is a 1200 ml pot. get your facts straight yourself...is it stainless steel or is it just shiny? Does the moon rotate? By the way...this is why I am an Amateur and not a professional like you...geesh I hate professionals...you guys are sooooo rude! Now go play in your sand box before your mama comes looking for you.
You're right . . . I deserved that. I realize now that you were just trying to be quirky and light-hearted in your video. And I responded in a mean and divisive way. I'm sorry; please forgive me.
And I too responded in a foolish was as well...I think we both needed time in the time out corner...lol. Apologies accepted and hope you will accept mine as well for I too and truly sorry...well I am sorry so now I apologise to you...lol.
