Firefighters sue NYC after they were nearly killed battling fire 

As a retired fireman I agree this policy is stupid,they could give one fireman at a time the day to go down to the medical office but that would involve a fireman on overtime,Make a choice save money or save lives!

In my opinion the firefighters in New York have always got the short end of things. Look at the poor guys from 911. They got screwed over royaly. Some suffered for yrs due to the injuries sustained while going through the rubbel looking for bodies from toxins that thet where told where safe. They couldn't even get proper medical care afterwards if memory serves me correctly. May God bless and keep these good men. I hope they get every dime. How much money did New york throw and is still throwing at illegals but the firefighters have to endanger their lives because New York won't maintain and upkeep the fire houses. Unexceptable

Closing an entire company for medical physicals is absolutely reckless. There are reasons Fire companies are placed where they are based on coverage and response times. NYC should have sent the firefighters one at a time and kept the house open.

Our quality of life, our Safety, our Businesses, our livelyhoods, our Homes and most importantly our Children's safety are being put at risk.

As a retired firefighter if a scene is not safe you don’t enter plain and simple.

Why would the city take such risks?

The third or fourth in fire companies take a while to get on the scene in all that New York traffic. These guys are used to taking risks fighting on the interior and having enough people to bail them out of situations.

so suing the city because they were doing what they were trained for? i dont get it, but im sure those slimy greasy lawyers see a payday..

I do not agree with that policy I think it's absolutely stupid it should be Rewritten the busiest Fire Department in the world and your closing a few stations are you for real that is insane the city needs to take more responsibility and ensuring the firehouses the apparatus are open and not closed that is suicidal and stupid all stations should remain open and in service people's lives depend on it thank you retired career iaff 3592

Ok, I can understand where they are coming from. Yeah that policy isn't the best, but here's the catch: it can be solved without changing it at all. If a company is placed OOS so everyone can go get a physical, then all that's needed is for another company to cover their district. Now I know what people will say, "But doesn't that take away protection from the district where the cover company is coming from?" It can yes, but that's a calculated risk that's taken by fire departments across the US every day. Mutual Aid coverage is undertaken everywhere, by volunteers covering the house of other volunteers, by paid companies covering paid companies, even by volunteers covering paid companies. Look at Baltimore city a while back, when dozens of Volunteer fire companies sent personnel and rigs to cover the entire city so the entirety of BCFD could go out of service to attend the funerals of their fallen brothers. Do you think the volunteers didn't have struggles back in their own district by not having that rig and those personnel? Absolutely they did, but they knew the risk and decided to help cover the city anyway. Staten Island also has volunteer companies, yes thats right, there exist volunteer fire departments separate from the FDNY inside the City of New York. They respond alongside the FDNY on calls and more than once saved their asses. Right after 9/11 every volunteer company in NYC was working overtime to cover FDNY houses and their own districts while the FDNY shifted companies around to fill the empty houses left by those who rode their last alarm that day. It was hectic, but they made it work. The FDNY can make the coverage work too, they just need to implement it.
