Firefly FFST Black and Purple Strat 

WOW ! ! 6 out 5 stars ! ! Thank You. Now, I hope I can continue to live up to those standards. I try very hard to do the best reviews on RU-vid. Honest Reviews that I want others to join in on. I review 1 guitar. As long as people come and share their purchase off the product along with the review.... Then we get a clear picture of the product and the companies QC. Thank You for posting and letting me know I'm doing the type of review you want to see.

@DominionFretWorks No one else that I've seen gets down to the nuts and bolts and explains it like you do. In general, just what they like/don't like, but never explain how to basically take a real decent budget guitar and make it a gigable player. I'm looking at the black and green ash model and was hoping you would give me some insight. Nailed it! Shipped for about $180 and change. Not bad at all. I found you while researching their Music Man copy, but unfortunately, by the time I made it back to order, they were gone. If you don't mind me asking, where are you located, and do you accept mailed guitars for builds? Appreciate you!

I do build guitars for people to their spec. Volgoa's and Firefly's have been used in the past doing custom stuff. FYI... ​@DominionFretWorks I should've asked before ordering the strat. However, I'm good with my choice. On the build, I have a Warmoth maple body from late 80s that I eventually want to build. It has a Jackson J90C, I just need to replace neck, (crazy how I can replace neck with SS frets cheaper than having a SS fret job!, but I want to switch to a maple fretboard too), along with a few other bells n whistles. All in due time. If I have any questions, I'll ask. Concerning your computer, if you have any questions, feel free to ask away - I'm a tech. Thanks again!

@DominionFretWorks I'm just curious if an original floyd rose, pre fine tuners, will drop in without modifications if the bridge gives me fits later on. I'm not a fan of the volume location either; will take your suggestion concerning push/pull pot and drop to the second hole if necessary. Patiently waiting lol

I have a AMH 90 Ibanez review. The fit and finish on the AMH 90 is SUPER GOOD ! They are almost 3 times the cost of the firefly. BUT... It's a buy and play it.. Some would say it's a lifetime guitar. I would say it's the best Hollow body under 400.00. The 338 is what made Firefly. As far as getting a firefly they seem to have added some vendors to make their guitars. I have been hearing bad things about the Relic FFST's. I have not done a review on them. I will most likely not be reviewing this production run of the Relic FFST. I think I'll waiting for the 2nd production run and see how that batch is. The FFST model in this review is made in three colors... White on White, Black and Silver and Black and Purple " the one in this review " I have here at my home / shop the Black and Purple with the rosewood finger board and the White on White with the Maple Finger board. Both are made well... Both seem to be the same on Fit and finish. So based on the two I have here I would say these are good guitars. The bridge pickup is a little hot for my taste. For me it has too much bite. Some will like it. Look at it this way.... The two that I have here " same guitars ... Just different colors " As a Sub said..... He looks at it as a base and installs the pickups he likes... and it still WAY WAY cheaper than buying the main model from Gibson or Fender ... or whatever they are cloning. Right now, I would say the FFTL I reviewed is great !!! I would buy that guitar and install Dylans Pickups in it... All you need to do .. The FFDC I reviewed ... Buy it and again install Dylans hands wired P-90 set All you need to do. The FFLP with the Access Cut neck ... Buy it and install a set of SD Pearly Gates or Some hot PAF's of your liking... DONE ! This guitar .... the FFST Black and Purple.. SD JB in bridge and then do a Hum- single coil rail in the neck with a standard single in the center. All the pickups are under 200 dollars for the sets. Any of the above will be Life Guitars that will Sound and play just like a 1500 dollars guitar once setup I will have a video in the next few months on the FFDC with Dlyan pickups ... Just behind on video's LOL. And remember so far ... If you buy a firefly and just hate it or it not good ... return it.. They seem to do well with customer service as far as getting it right for you.. I will say they are slow getting back to you and getting it started ... But they seem to take care of it. Firefly nailed it on this one . . . . . I have two of these in different colors. ... both are great . Make sure you pay attention to the model / type of guitar.. Firefly has a few models named FFST. The one with the FR bridge has some problems from the factory. Video coming out soon on that model. The FFST with the Square neck plate on the back of the guitar to bolt the neck on.... That vender seems to make a better guitar for them. So look for that. Thanks for letting me know you liked the video !

Right now they have this guitar on sale..... Black/ Purple=159 Black/Silver=149 Black and Yellow=169 I paid 219.00 plus shipping for mine... when they first came out. if ya got the black /Sliver one... most likely be under 180 -185 with tax and shipping. Woofie is a great DOG ! There are days when recording that he just wants in on the activity... LOL On this Black and Purple Strat.. When I ordered it I was thinking it would be on the HEAVY SIDE due to the body wood type. But it is on the LP side off weight. and that's saying something for a Stratocaster to get into that weight range. As far as Guitar Gardens listing everything on their listing. Ya... It has gotten better. LOL But part of the cheaper price is... Lack of an IT department.. Someone just doing that job. Listing all the specs and taking better photos of the guitars. Same with inspecting each guitar from the vendor. They receive it .. stock it.. and send as it sells. I think they could do these things... And some would pay the extra. I would say you're looking at 75.00 dollars per guitar for these two items. I have said it before.. This company could do a 400.00-450.00-dollar guitar and kill the 550-700 dollar market. With the right people. I hope they call me to help them out in this.... But Firefly is not wanting that market right now. I think they are happy right where they are.

Firefly makes ash and mahogany bodies for their guitars. Ash is heavier. I don't think 8lbs is really that heavy, people buy 10 lb Les Pauls all the time and the average Fender Strat is 8lbs with the usual range of 7 to 9 pounds. So yours isn't any heavier than the average Fender Strat.

its heavy for a strat....for a LP guitar ... No. But for a Strat ya ... it's on the heavy side.@@joeking433

@@DominionFretWorks Strats run from 7 to 9 lbs with 8lbs being average. My Relic FFST is in that range at 7.3lbs. My Fender American Standard is 8.1lbs. I have a few guitars with Mexican Fender bodies and necks of composite, aluminum, and a USACG neck and the aluminum neck partscaster weighs 10.4lbs, LOL. That's a heavy guitar! The composite and USACG necked guitars are 8.5 lbs and 8.2 lbs. My Gibson SG Standard is my lightest guitar at 6.8lbs.

I have never did a weight on my Fender Strat.... But the firefly is much heavier ... just picking them up you can feel the weight on the Firefly.. For me it's no big deal ... I played a Gibson Explorer for a few years.... Talking about a heavy guitar .... after a night playing out you knew you played 3 sets... LOL @@joeking433

We are slowing down a little ... These videos take so much time to make... I will be doing 1 every 3 weeks and some repair mod videos each week. Reviews done in the last 6 to 7 weeks are like this one... VERY DETAILED. Older reviews have less detail but as the members wanted thing to be in the reviews they were added. The neck on this guitar is VERY GOOD !!!!! and the body work is VERY GOOD !!!!! This is the best guitar I have reviewed for someone that want a guitar with " THERE PICKUPS" in it. As I said in the video... really not a Std. Strat guy due to the volume knob. Not the fault of the guitar just my lack of playing a std. Stratocaster setup. The HSS setup is a good bar guitar. A lot of sounds can could from this setup. Very Verse on sounds. FYI my first reviews were not as detailed as the new ones. I would ask subs what they wanted to see in the reviews. Ya the finish on the guitar is really good. 100% nailed it.

One of my first reviews was the FF338 Pro model. Nice guitar ... Mine came with some high action height from the factory... But after a setup and string change... WOW it's a good guitar.

My Relic FFST had the same problem, too. I just screwed the jack in further until maybe 1/4" sticks out and it works perfectly. Doesn't look as good but does the job.

Please let us know how your exchange goes with Guitar Gardens. Customer Services means a lot to people. So far any problems I have had in the past they have resolved. I did order two . . . the other one is the white on white with the brushed grain. Maple neck and fret board. I will do a SHORT REVIEW on that guitar as the spec's should be the same. that will be in a few weeks... It already here and the overall fit and finish is good as well... Have not played it or check anything on it yet.. Just opened the box to make sure it was ok from shipping.

My return experience was great. Firefly originally offered to pay $40 of the shop cost to fix the twisted neck. I opted to return it for a complete refund. While waiting for the refund, I reordered the same black/purple FFST and it was delivered in 7 days to the east coast. The instrument is flawless. Everything is perfect. The tone rings like a piano even with the stock strings. I weighs 8.5 lbs though. Firefly is imho the best bang for the buck.

Ya in the video I do a weight as well..... Mine was in the HIGH 8's as well. They are on the heavy side for a Stratocaster. This is a guitar that I would setup to my taste... And just play and play ... The Ash body and roasted Maple neck make this guitar... Ya, I see about 7 days for shipping to me as well... Northern Va. I'm glad to hear they did what they could for you... On a twisted neck ... I would return.... So, I think you did what I would have done.@@LuvhandleR

How much do they weigh?

Look under the chapters in the description .... If you click on the chapter going over weight... It will take you right to that part of the video@@bluwng

Intonation does change from the lying down position to the upright position... BUT if set and tuned in the same position it makes no difference.... If you tune and intonate lying down the guitar is still setup right.... BUT if you pick the guitar up ...in the upright position it will be just a little out of tune.. on the flat side... If you then tune it to be right and check the intonation, you will see it is still good. a cent here or their based-on position of the tune doesn't matter in the overall setup. The key is to then tune the guitar in the position you will be playing it. In one of my Video's, I address this topic... I can't remember which one it is in... But I show this fact on how the guitar reacts to changing the setup position.

Yeah, the Ash body FFST's are heavy. The Relics use a mahogany body and they are a good bit lighter. My Relic FFST is 7.3lbs. Fender Strats range from 7 to 9 lbs.

Just looked at them . . . . I wanted a Rosewood Fret board.... JS400PKR . . ..But the only one I see with Rosewood is PINK . . . .PKR stands for pink I guess.. JS400VYW ...The Off White / Yellow with the maple fret board doesn't look bad.

Just pick up the White Relic with the Rosewood Fret board SSS. I'm doing the Hot Rail SD in the bridge with the Wilkinson M center and Neck Pickups - Pure Tone Jack - 1 Volume (push/Pull) 1 - Tone But I have 3 others guitars to MOD in front of that video. Sometimes Firefly just nails it.... in the stock form...For me the bridge pickup in this guitar is just too Hot and becomes a little muddy. Thanks for commenting and Welcome to the Channel !

The way I fixed the jack problem was to screw the jack in further so it stuck out a quarter inch or so. Doesn't look as good but functions perfectly. I can't believe Firefly made such an error.

Have you been reading the comments posted here... In this model we were told by a Sub that his came with a twisted neck.... Guitar Gardens by his post is replacing the guitar. All the other posts here are good on this model. We did get a Bad review from a Sub on the Relic Model.... This is what it is all about.. Please come back and post a review of the one you receive from Guitar Gardens. At this point they have to know my Name and Address . . . Not saying they CHERRY PICKING FOR ME... But to keep them honest and keep their QC up we as the people buying these guitars need to hold them accountable. I myself have had to good though Customer Service on 1 Guitar from Guitar Gardens.. out of 8 guitars ... The guitar played fine and there was no damage to the guitar... I have OCD ... LOL and the trans red finish showed the glue line from the two-peace body... and it did not align to the neck. It just looked funny ... The ffst will be my 9th firefly Some were bought to mod...just wanted the body, then add my equipment and have some really great guitars that cost less then custom shop prices.... The body kit would have cost more then you add the finish.... yeah. But for a budget guitar the Fire Fiy and Harley Benton are both a good starting place for mods. Or just a good budget guitar if your not into the fine tuning thing.

The idea of the body kit .... Thats a great point ! Never thought of it like that. If you haven't you would like my FFMN video's. I did a full rebuild on the that model. First went though and made it play good with all factory parts... them went back and did the upgrades. If I remember the total cost was right at 450.00 dollars all in .@@duanelinquist4244

They make a Epoxy Wood Filer ... But it's very costly.... But it holds like glue and will never flake off. fill, sand and finish next would be Bondo... You can add a little epoxy to the bondo... but you have to get the ratio just right if you try this. Play around on some old wood with the bondo / epoxy mix untill you find the right ratio... To much Bondo harder is not good plus to much epoxy is not good. The harder in the bondo needs to set at the same rate as the epoxy.. That is the trick. So a 20 min set epoxy need to be with a mix of bondo with harder that will setup in 20 mins. They need to set at the same time. This would be a lot of work..... I would do a rub finish on the white ... rub in a color .. the color will only set into the low spots of the grain... wape off any color on the raise part. Then clear sand ... clear sand.... clear and sand... You will get 90% of that smooth finish .. it will not be like glass ... but you could keep adding clear until you get there. But remember a finish that think will dampen the wood ... so say a lot of tone comes from the wood with THIN FINISHES... Just saying.. I don't if it true or House Poo... Just what they say... Just like the TONE WOOD thing...

These are in the LP weight .... I noticed it as soon as I lifted it out of the box.

Strings .. Everyone finds what they like at some point. I played Cold Blue Steels... for a few years... DR few a few years.. I use Ernie Ball ... good lower cost string. and mostly the D'Addario NYXL's 9 to 42's The D'Addario seem to hold there sound the longest. There are so many strings out there... If your buy a name band string your good... As far as the FFST. The two I have looked at, 9's and 10's on the High E-would be fine... And 42 to 46 on your low E. If you go bigger than that you will most likely have to cut the nut for the larger string.

Please read some of the people's comments here on the Relics.... Been seeing some bad reviews from some of the subs. This FFST is not the same as the relic ones. They made a White on White, Silver on Black and this one Purple on Black.. You can see by the neck plate on the back of the guitar and how the chamfered the body in that location. The relics all have an angled neck plate... I think this is the best guitar Firefly has made to date. I would but a BJ in the bridge and two hot rails in the center and neck. AND OH MY ! ! ! ! This thing would just be KILLER ! Please read all the post from all the people that have commented... Everyone here is trying to help everyone else! Thanks for commenting and watching the video!

@@DominionFretWorks I have the Relic and it's phenomenal! One thing about the Relic is that the body is mahogany rather than the Ash one you have and is much lighter (7.3 lbs)! The weaknesses are the same bad output jack you have and the tuners were garbage with a lot of play in them. Maybe they thought crappy tuners were more vintage? LOL!

Yes I have a Relic in the white SSS setup, Another great guitar by them overall. We'll be doing a review soon on that model. Funny sometimes the tuner are good... Hit and miss from what I have been hearing. Mine on the relic are ok.... There fine until I go and do a full upgrade. For the price I paid... 159.00 its fine .... I don't think its their best bang for buck guitar from them.@@joeking433

@@DominionFretWorks They have a lot of cool traits, stainless steel frets, locking tuners, roasted maple neck, and mahogany body. And you pay a lot for those things on a $1000 guitar! I would put that neck against almost any guitar neck, TBH. SS frets, no high frets, smooth frets and rounded fret ends with a nice fretboard. But I do like my Firefly SG better. What I don't understand is why they don't use common Fender measurements so that they can be easily modded? The tuners are a rare size, around 8mm diameter hole rather than the common 8.5mm and 10mm., the bridge screws are an odd spacing, the neck is too wide and the neck cavity to narrow, to use regular replacement Fender parts (however, a fender pickguard will match up fine except for having to drill one hole or leave screwless). Why do you think Firefly doesn't make it so you can swap Fender parts? Is there some kind of legal thing they they want to stay away from?

This is the best Firefly and any other that I have reviewed with ball end frets.... The frets are cut and install all most perfectly... This is a step up for them.. It has a good feel and the fit and finish is good. You will need to work on the jack ... That is the problem with this model. Change the jack plate and see if it allows the plug to go all the way in or fix the route. You may be able to just move jack plate down ... dunno. I just say it a good guitar .. with a great neck on it. style

I ordered two of these ..... This one..... The Black/Purple with the Rosewood fret board. and the White on White with the brushed grain finish and the maple fret board. I like rosewood more ... LOL so I reviewed that one first ... I will look and see if I see any problems with the one, they sent me... I'll look at the bridge mounts and see if mine is like the one you got.

@@DominionFretWorks Yeah the White on White brushed grain with the Maple fretboard is what I bought as well. That's the one where I had to pull out the posts for the bridge because the bridge posts where breaking through the wood. I glued some dowls in the holes and decided that I was just going to throw a Gotoh in it instead. I drilled new post holes at 25 3/16 from the new Gotoh nut I installed and installed the new Gotoh posts and Gotoh FR flat against the body. It came out great!!!! My action was perfect and intonation was spot on. Just to let you know, it was your videos that gave me the confidence to do my own work on my guitars, Thanks!!! 😁

Ya ... the demo could be done first... But everyone knows the factory strings they use are really not that good. This was the first time doing this.... and I think it's better. Most are going to change the strings right when they get it. I just want to give the best overview of what you will be getting. Thanks for commenting and letting me know your thoughts on this. I can't say if that guitar is as good as the models I listed above. It does have the square neck plate... So it maybe made by the same vender as the above models just not sure.... There are posts in this comment area about the relic's... and the sand blasting they did to make the hardware look old....With what has been found out about those... I would not buy a relic....Read the posts about it ... They guy that posted the comment also has a video on it. I hope this helps .. Like I said 350 bucks for a great guitar and a great amp !!! that's just nuts... You can see a review off this little amp here on the channel... I think I used that amp on my DEAN MD24 review as well... I use it downstairs in the shop and sometimes when I go away on trips.... If I don't take my Line 6 HX stomp with head phones. I didn't have a strat right next to it... But if it is an EMG set that is HSS.. Just transfer the parts over to the Firefly pickguard..... The routing looks very similar to what I've seen in Squires and standard Fenders .. This really shouldn't be a problem... But I haven't tried that particular set.

On my Relic FFST Fender pickguards fit fine except you have to drill one hole. But the bridge, neck, and body do not fit standard Fender parts.

The R2 ...is what I'm thinking .... Wait until you can measure it to make sure... The have R4 R5... The larger number doesn't mean it is wider .... Just so you know ...

The radius is right ... I checked it ... a 10R was a little off .. Just a little. So, I can see it being 9.5 to 14R fret board. @ 28;39 I check the thickness of the neck. There are chapters in the video... If you click on the details tab.. A list of chapters comes up. This is not a thick neck... But it is also not a thin neck like an Ibanez.

I have been using the D'Addario NYXL 09/42's They seem to last longer ... not getting dead sounding after setting.

Ya you can move... more tread to the outside of the jack plate. Quick fix .. but the route inside needs more depth.

I just screwed the jack in further and left 1/4" protrude out. Doesn't look as good but works perfectly.

I should order another 338 from Firefly... I wanted the black one without the F-holes... missed it this go around. But I did pick up two other models for review.... Coming soon !

I have reboxed the guitar .... So, I can't measure them. These are not small narrow frets. I would say there are around 1.3 to 1.4 mm tall medium width. Nice frets.

I can't say which is better... Sorry. I have never played a Jet Guitar. I do hear good thing about their products. I can say this Model of the FFST is a good guitar from Guitar Gardens. I point out what I find in my reviews so you can make the call... Better is not something I can tell you. If I feel it's better, then it's better for me. Maybe the feel and the sound are just hitting me the way I like... May not be for you. I try to show a lot of different sounds in the review as well.. I hope I touch base on what people are looking for. If you get one. Please come back and let us know your feeling on it. You really can't go wrong with this one. It is well made, and it just went on sale! last night at Guitar Gardens. FYI ... I get nothing from Firefly / Guitar Gardens. Sorry ... Be remind me .. How about a Gibson... Are you wanting a Gibson review... or comparing this guitar to a Gibson?? Gibson really doesn't make a Strat like guitar anymore ... I know Gibson made some Super Strats in the late 80's early 90's ??? I remember them not doing well on sales and Gibson stop making the line of guitars. If I remember it was a Squared off strat style body with a FR bridge. I no longer have any Gibson Guitars.. I do have two Epiphones. I have been thinking about a Gibson Double Cut LP. let me know what you were thinking about when you said .... How about Gibson. This is a different type of finish... I love Lacquer... This is most likely a 2k ploy they are spraying. the purple is most likely a rub and wipe after the 2k black ploy. Then clear coated after the sand pass after the purple step. Just guessing but that is how I would do it.

I did not order a Relics due to the fact when I was looking on the site.... I could see the neck joint and body line where the neck plate is...They were not the same.....The neck joint and body line is the same on this one as the FFTL I just reviewed. The Relic Firefly is from a different Vendor than the one in this video. That is just my thoughts... I can't say for sure but looking at joints and I would also say... Firefly had a FFLP for 2 days with a FR bridge...I would say the vendor is the same as IYV... Whatever sub company is making the IYV LP FR is the same as the Firefly FFLP-FR. I almost ordered one of the FFLP-FR's when I saw it.... but after looking at it... I was thinking the IYV would be a better review. As far as doing a review on the RELIC ..... It will not be this production run from Firefly. Maybe next time I can order one and see what they are about. Firefly seems to always improve their products with each production run. I hope they see the reviews and the comments from there customer's and fix what needs fixing.

Yes they are not the same guitars.....Not the same bones with different finishes.. not the same on the routing or the hardware... Mine has the full angled square plate. The Relic is made by a different vendor. You can also tell by the boxing.... The first vender does a full foam case with a line foam top. The other two venders use the coffin type foam case that is split in the center. All this means is they are selling guitars.... and they have had to add vendors to keep up with demand. They should stick to the best vendor and work with them to RAMP up production to keep the QC the same. This also means there will be growing pains... IE problems as they work out the bugs in ramping up production.@@oldasrocks9121

hi @@DominionFretWorks I have a new relic FFST that arrived a week ago that I haven't messed with much yet. Strangely it has the same behavior on the 1/4 inch jack with a plug installed. Checked after seeing this video. The frets will have to be leveled to not buzz on this one, I think -- Another reason to think that it was made by different people. I am a beginner and haven't leveled frets before. I ordered a notched straight edge and a 10 inch beam off e-bay. Just found your channel and will look at more of your videos. I want to make some bluesy -Hendrix sounding bends to keep me encouraged --do you have a book suggestion on how to do that? I have a beginner book but I would like something rock sounding instruction to help keep me motivated.

I have two video's on leveling the frets and dressing frets.. One is in the Harley Benton Service Video's and the other is in the FIrefly FFMN video's. There is a hole bunch of info in the Firefly FFMN video group. Try to watch all those video's from the first one on. I redo the guitar just using all the factory parts.... I got it playing great in its stock form... them I do some mod work and take the guitar all the way. So check those out.... I would get a SUPER CHEAP guitar to try doing first.... Maybe even a broken guitar that is free to learn on... @@jerryshore8374

Thank You! This guitar would just be a Killer with a JB in the Bridge and some hot rails in the center and neck. If I did Hot rails in the center and neck. I would do a coil spilt on each... Push pull on the Volume and first tone... Last tone you could spilt the JB. I don't know about the MAKING MONEY THING.. I'm sure this cannot continue ... At some point someone has to pay the piper. As the saying goes.

If this guitar had Hot Rails in the Center and Neck with a JB in the bridge.... IT WOULD BE A KILLER.... If ya did that it would hold its own ... and hold it for under 500.00 dollars... I have a USA made Fender Stratocaster... I have a Squire 40th Stratocaster... and I have a Epiphone Les Pual Access cut with a FR. I sold my 85 Gibson Explorer...sold my 73 Gibson Les Pual... So, I know the bands... The neck on this guitar in this review is great. Is it better ???? Dunno .. But I know a great feeling and playing neck when I play one. As I said in the review ... There is room for improvement on this guitar... For me the pickups.. Just to much bite and bark.. A JB and some Hot Rails and this thing is a KILLER !

I beg to differ I would buy a Firefly, Musi, and a Censtar any day over a fender and I'm saying this because just the stainless steel frets alone blow fender away, fender would cost you way over a grand just to have that.

@@thomasfontenot4881 Those may have stainless steel frets but they are the real soft grade of stainless steel that are even softer than regular nickel silver frets! Trust me, I've leveled them!
