Ground wire through the trem spring loop: I bet that was a worker on their first day; Or a joke that the more experienced workers played on the new guy. Akin to telling a teen to check their blinker fuid.
This was needed. As retired luthier have been buying couple these guitars for fun and surprisingly happy w 2/3 so far. One needed a lot of fret level, great now. Was going to do a similar video as a public service but you did a very useful one, appreciate you. It really isn't rocket science like some think and you don't have to have my expensive tools. Congrats
@@trinacria1956 yeah so far I've had pretty good luck with the budget guitars... We have reviewed quite a few... I would say there's been five that I would say was substandard... And only one that wasn't worth fixing. Yeah I have a couple tutorial type videos on the channel... And some mod videos. Thanks for commenting and joining in on the topic... Always good to hear from other people that service and worked on guitarist professionally...
there is a group of videos covering this bridge... This bridge had some problems.... but is fixable.. Some of the other FR copy bridges just are not worth fixing...
nice cab demonstration brother! are there two 16ohm speakers in here wired for 8ohms? i wish the 1x12 cab had a 4ohm speaker so i could hook up my 4ohm crate for a "bigger sound".....its 8ohm(the 1x12 cab)....
The Higher the OHM load the more you PUSH your power amp stage in your rig... This can give you that BIG loud sound without the volume.... As the amp works harder to push the drivers. 4 ohm cabs in the guitar world really can't do this.... Halfer Amps like the DH500 and there 9505 Trans could run down to 1.5 ohms.... Witch today would be fine if you're doing a CAB / AMP IR. ( modeling type preamp ) Axe-Fx something like that. This V30 driver is a little on the Dark Side for me... I think they would work well with Cream Backs mixed in one cab... Speakers are key to your amps sound...... Change your speakers..... before changing your Pre Amp / Power Amp. Green Backs / Cream Backs / G12-65 / Penta all great drives. There are a lot of people that like theV30... So I'm sure your can get them to work once you dial in your amp. Thaks Again for commenting and joining the topics!
@@DominionFretWorks koool brother! i know my lil 15 watt solidstate crate(gx15r) wont ever rattle foundations even with the monoprice 1x12 cab...but im sure it will have more "body" than the lil 8in im running now lol... im wondering if it will be safe on the amp itself running a 8ohm 12in speaker...
great review brother! how is the routing around the neck pup in the body? i was hoping youd remove the scratchplate so we could see but it didnt happen lol... possibly include that in the future? ive come across a few monoprice guitars...os30 and the older T style that you have to remove the neck because of the lip with the 22nd fret blocking the removal process...plus the smaller routing as well... its a bigger problem on the os30 because you have your switch and pots in the scratcplate....should anything break under there oooo big bear to get to it.....
Yes ...the newer reviews go into more detail....As people asked for things they were added....Check out some of my latest reviews... passed 6 months or so... Very detailed. This guitar for its price point is hard to beat... Most of the time you can get them for 139.00 on sale on Amazon... Firefly also has a good telecaster for just a little more money...
@@DominionFretWorks hekk yaa brother im glad i found your channel! i compare and review guitars on my channel too...my playing is sub par but it still somewhat demonstrates what tones the guitar can do hahaha!!!
@@birdman316 Glad you found it as well... tell other about it ! I try not to be like the others "review channels" I really try to review the guitar and look at how it's made and check how it is setup from the factory. I would say most channels are DEMO channels... Also do Tech Tip Video's / Setup Videos / Mods.... Once we have a few more subscribers we are going to start doing a weekly hangout and chat.
@@DominionFretWorks awesome sounds great! yup very few channels dive deep in the guitar to show the build quality(or not)... ya some are really fast demo films not explaining alot....
Thank You ! Please subscribe if you haven't already... A lot of info on this channel. I try to do the best reviews on RU-vid. A review that covers the guitar and what you can expect to receive if you buy one. Thanks for commenting and joining in on the channel.
I've seen some luthiers use feeler guages right at the nut at first fret to file nut slots. Are you familiar with this? Advantages/disadvantages? I want to say I saw Dan Erlewine do it. Also, do you know of any cabs that have a 1/4 input jack? The multi fx pedal I have has built-in amps, and I was just curious about this. Would a PA cab work in this set-up? Hope all is well.
Yes, you can do that.... I did that for a long time.... the only problem with doing it is you need to do 1 string at a time as you install the strings. let's say you start with your High E string.... the B string is not installed yet. Now you can get the gauge under the High E without the other sting in the way... There is a radius to the neck so the strings beside the string your working on can get in the way... you're feeling the drag of the gauge between the string and the fret. hard to do with the other strings next to the one you're working with. It's a great way of going about it... very safe as long as you know how much to have as your set measurement. Some use a fret wire with the tang removed... Needs to be the same fret wire ( height wise ) they slide this right up to the nut and file to the fret wire.... this is the even safer way.. Now you're cutting the nut to the fret height of your frets making your nut work and act like a zero fret. I like the fret wire way if I am doing that type of setup... If I have a fret wire to the same spec as the guitars fret wire. I have done so many nuts in the passed.... That know how far I can push the cut. ( I have still cut too deep at times) if your setting your action above .085 on the E string at the 12th.... odds are you are going to be shape on the 1st fret if you try to keep the other frets close ( just as many shape notes as flat notes ) this is due to the string distance from the fret... it becomes greater as you go down the fret board. this will make the fretted note go sharp. You're bending the string down to the fret. You can move the saddle back and offset this....this will lower the tune of the fretted notes across the fret board. NOTE if you cut your nut for a higher action then try to lower your string you can get fret buzz on the 1st fret. this is due to the rake angle of the string to the frets. Large changes in the action height can make this happen. Lets say your at .085 Low E 12th and you cut the nut to be close on the 1st and a average across the fret board.... If you lower your action down to .06 or lower most likely you're changing the nut. This is way you see so many guitar companies do a basic setup at .07 /12th low E. it is a good spot as you can go as low as .055 and as high as .085 and still get a good setup. the nut is going to work with very little tuning. Everything works together... If you have more neck relief in your guitar this can sharpen the notes around the 7th,8th and 9th fret. remember your truss rod really is not deflecting the neck pass the 18th /19th fret ... it is bolted to the body of the guitar under those frets. Adding relief can fix flat notes around the 8th fret... It is not much... I know but it does change the notation if you add relief. 1) know your action height you want... 2) Know the relief you want 3) know your string gauge then start with the action height set at the 12th.... adjust the saddles to get your radius the way you like it... Some like a flat-er string radius vs the neck radius. once all this is done. start working your nut... each cutting pass check the fretted notes down the fret board. shot for just as many flat as sharp. Floating bridges FR type... 4) know that your bridge is Falcrum based, and this point is Infront of the string saddle...most of the time pushing the bar down ( lowing the string pitch ) will increase the string action height...... most of the time.. PULLING UP ! ! ! ! most of the time will lower the string action height... If you set your action to low ... up pulls will fret out... or choke the notes. When I look at Floyed Rose bridge the first thing I look at is the back set of the saddles... if I see the saddles in the 3nd hole... I know the tuning swing on that saddle will be limited... as the back of the saddle will most like hit the angled base plate. Next I know the saddle is move back away from its Falcrum point of the base plate. The greater that distance from the Falcrum to the saddle the more height change in the string as you use the tremolo. Kahler had a great system that was best for not doing this. As the saddles were mounted to a cam that moved. Sorry for chatting and chatting.... I love chatting! I love talking guitars! WE SHOULD DO A LIVE STREAM ONCE A WEEK JUST TO CHAT !
yep.... doesn't matter. it is easier without the strings..... also easier to clean the body and pickups without the strings.... I was under a crunch to get the guitar done... that night. but I also wanted to make sure it was as good as I could get it with the stock parts. I think this is a good setup for a new player. I wish the G string could have been a little better... but the average notation down the fret board was even... sharp to flat and the first fretted note was OK... I really need to make a list of things to do in a order..... and hang it on the wall. Cheat Sheet List
Been waiting for another of your DIY videos! Helpful every time, thanks again for providing such detail. And of course, love the P90 Goldtop and FR Les Paul in the intro :0)
The USPS guy keeps dropping off Les Pual Guitars............ I need to get to work on why they are here....... But need to do the Classic Guitar FLASH BACK video first as it was a poll Question on the next video... Last time I checked it was still tied . . . . . LOL ! ! I will do more fix and setup stuff..... Still have the FFDC to finish ... and a headless guitar that needs some work... well it needs more than some work( needs the neck seat milled down and angled....
I enjoy your videos. Today I learned a litte about filing the nut to help intonate a guitar. What you said at the end of the video about allowing your ear to recognize what that tuning sounds like when learning. Wish I had that kind of instruction when I started. I think everyone startut shoud understand the science of how sounds are produced and how all of the components work together to create music.
I learned on a Sears guitar that action height was set to MILES.... LOL with enough neck relief to still have .09 at the 10th fret when pressing down on the 22 fret.....LOL beginners.... have it so good now ! ! ! ! ! these new budget guitars are so good for the money... you would have had to spend 800 to 1000 dollars back when I started to get what a sub 250 dollar guitar does now AND you are so right about what you have said in your comment! Now days there is so much info out there for new players. I hope I can add to that info and help others in any way I can!
Man my OCD went into overdrive when you called that Peterson Strobe tuner a Robertson Strobe tuner LoL. Love the video as always very good information , As I am learning to do my own setups as well . I have found every guitar I own have a different set up personality, maybe it is the culture of the wood or something who knows right? I have learned to be flexible with my set ups as a result . Thanks again for the information.
LOL I did the same thing in the Epiphone Alex Lifeson review... Robetson Tuner..... Funny someone just commented that I did that in that video about 4 or 5 hours ago..... I will try to overcome my Robertson name calling and call it a Peterson Tuner . . 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ya every guitar has its own personality.... Let the guitar be what it wants to be.... it is the same with setups... There are many ways to get to your like setup... This was a basic setup as the guitar was very good to start with. when ya get into adjusting the truss rod ..... and fixing high frets ... that becomes a little more work. truss rod adjustments can make or break how your guitar plays..... Neck relief is one of those ... I like relief ... I like no relief... I setup the guitar with a little....5mm is a good starting spot...
I notice sometimes you refer to your Peterson tuner as a Robertson. is Robertson a brand you use at work? This is a really nice guitar however I feel like I have to point out that a Texas Toast Challenger Level 1 cost $1299 and for $100 more you can get it with custom handwound pickups made by Dylan Talks Tone however it doesn't come with a Floyd so that may be a deciding factor. I know this isn't a custom one off from a Luthier (probably $3000) but it's nice to know there are small American guitar companies trying to pass on a savings to the customer. Thank you for the review 🍺
Ya.... I do .... LOL Dunno why, I call it a Robertson. I have some of Dylans pickups here... very nice pickups. The pickups in the stock Epiphone are fine. The way it is wired allows for so many different tones. Would the Dylan Pickups be better ???? Dunno. I have reviewed a lot of guitars.... The sound you hear is not just the pickups.... The Amp has more to do with your tone.. IMO Not saying cheap pickups will sound like Dylans thought a great amp... not at all. But you will get more from your amp and how it is dialed in. For me... the tones from this guitar are fine.... It hits all the marks for the tones needed to play a wide range of music. Sometimes ... we over think things.... LOL and chase a tone...Let the guitar speak to you. They will tell ya what they like. the feedback you get from the neck and the tone you hear will push you play new things if you bond with the guitar.
I have played a step down most of my life. But this was setup for someone else. I have heard this before about the HZ. Thanks for commenting and sharing. These videos are always hit and miss on how RU-vid pushes them. I hope you liked the editing in the video... only had 1 or 2 sync problems... and tried some new stuff.
Hey, do you mind to let me know, which is the yelow guitar brand? The yellow one, next to the yamaha hss red one? Is it a musicman? Is it a axis? A sterling? Thanks in advance
That is a Firefly FFMN. It has been reworked 100% by me to make it a SUPER BEATER ! I did look at the AXIS models but none of them had the FR bridge. So when this model showed up by Firefly ... I was hoping I could Hot Rod it and build a great guitar out of it. If you go to the channel home page click on videos... them guitar setups and mods.. you will find 6 or 7 videos on fixing this guitar. The first group of videos was me fixing the best I could with all STOCK PARTS... just tuning and setting up the guitar the best I could. The 2nd group of videos ... I mod the guitar and make it a super beater bar guitar. Bullet Proof Player! I have a little over 550.00 dollars in the guitar with the parts ... and way too many hours of work ...LOL ... ya.............. I know..................😥 I already miss it. This was the best guitar I have ever received from Firefly.... This one and the Purple and black FFST I reviewed about 5 months ago. I have over 25 guitars still here.... and I have sold 4 in the last week and 1/2 .... It is so hard to let them go. But I have to clear the floor to allow new guitars to come in and be reviewed.... WOW what a guitar ! The Kramer LP -FR ... So those 4 reviewed guitars I have just bonded with....
@@DominionFretWorks Ah, so the FFSP was “Phenomenal, but just didn’t bond with?” 😉 Firefly has definitely improved most of their models since their early days-my current FFTL is much better than the previous Nashville-style FFTL I had. It looks like these particular FFSPs seem to come from a VERY good factory! Too bad they can’t ALL come from that same factory. 😂 The FFMN-that’s the Music Man Axis/EVH/Wolfgang-style one with the Floyd Rose-style trem, right? I’m more of a jazz guy myself, so I’m hoping to get their Little Sister or FF338 one day.

Maybe.....for the camera I need... LOL gotta start somewhere...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks my Freind..
Wow those pickup readings! Firefly does seem to use different pickups in the same models beyond the designations of Elite, Classic, and Pro. Great review as always!
I’ve had 2 firefly’s …. The Red 338 and the goldtop p90…. The goldtop I still have and it’s got the fattest most surprisingly comfy and playable neck I’ve ever encountered!!! All guitars have something..... Remember this is a REVIEW channel... Not a DEMO channel. My job in the review is to find the good and the bad. I bought a GAX-50, about 20yrs ago. Still plays great, and holds up well. Same style bridge, but only 2 knobs. Only issue it gives regularly, is the pot and jack retaining nuts loosening. It's definitely my heaviest guitar, by couple pounds.
Put a little BLUE LOCK TIGHT on the treads of the jack..... then install the nut. let the lock tight get semi dry ... tacky before installing the nut. I have some guitar for whatever reason... did that... They don't do it any longer ... after I did this trick. Teflon tape is used sometimes too.... If the blue doesn't hold up you can use red, but the red is on the strong side.. and sometimes is hard to loosen after you use it.

@@DominionFretWorks Better electronics are always welcome... but things like the locking tuners, and frankly the innovations in design are all good... Well I watched the whole video as always. And now it kinda makes me happy that I got the Version 1 Monsoon. I really did not like that neck issue you brought up. Yea a shim can fix it, but this should never left the factory that way in my opinion. I admit that is a beautiful burl finish tho. And you didn't bring it up but I heard that the neck is thinner than the version 1. I would like that better as I do feel the neck on mine is still a tad bit too thick. I've always preferred a very thin neck. Leo Jaymz is doing a rockin Job tho. It seems he is listening to RU-vidrs and trying to make improvements. That's more than some companies are doing. I think he has a really good future if he keeps it up. The Monsoon truly is a Beast of a guitar and an Amazing Value in my opinion.
I got the green burl one and i had to level a few frets but i love that thing and the tuners on mine do stay in tune pretty well. it sounds great and is very light so it does not hurt my shoulder like most of my other guitars.
It is on the lightweight side of guitars...That is nice if you're doing set list after set list.... The tuners are the big thing I see with this guitar.... A good set of locking tuners for QUICK string changes....and work smoothly with a ratio that lets you fine tune. But I have liked both Monsoons that I have played.... Just waiting for them to fix a few more problems before I do one up as a go to bar guitar!
Thank You ! This was a fun guitar to play! I tried some new video edits.... to zoom in and out.... Messed up in a few places ... but I think it looks good with the angles... Still learning. Trying to do the best videos I can... and learn with each one ! Thanks for commenting and letting me know you like the content.
Suuuper information to know .. i was wanting it for the look tremolo and the actives especially for the outrageous price.. so now ill just buy some active pups for my guitar.. i like fluence over EMG... More resonance and overtones by 25 percent id say.. and just killer for fantastic feedback and sustain.. and you my friend are a great player with some killer sound goin on in that room !!! .. happy 4th ! 😊 I'll tell who i know to sub for sure... You should be on top of the demo dudes for pure information on the good and bad of any guitar.. 🎸🎸🎸
