Firefly Serenity Movie Reaction | First Time Watching
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys! Thank you so much for being here and for the final conclusion of our Firefly journey!
#firefly #tvreaction #fireflyreaction
In this continuation of the television series "Firefly," a group of rebels travels the outskirts of space aboard their ship, Serenity, outside the reach of the Alliance, a sinister regime that controls most of the universe. After the crew takes in Simon (Sean Maher) and his psychic sister, River (Summer Glau), whom he has just rescued from Alliance forces, they find themselves being pursued by the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an Alliance agent who will stop at nothing to find them.
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video 💜

The characters exist to advance the story. This was the known end of the line for Firefly so the film had more freedom to tell the story than a series that needs consistency from episode to episode. Book’s death motivated Mal to fight rather than hide as he would usually do, and Wash’s death left the rest of the crew’s survival in more doubt to ramp up the drama in the final act.
@thewanderingwizard9848
@thewanderingwizard9848 9 месяцев назад
@@rustygunner8282 very true, but Wash was a painful one to have to let go, because of the relationship with Zoe and the fact that he died leaving her childless. But... I can't conceive of any of the other characters I would choose to have let go in his place. My least favorite character is Simon and I still would have mourned his loss for River and Kaylee's sakes.
@CFWhitman
@CFWhitman 9 месяцев назад
@@rustygunner8282 Another movie was supposed to happen when this one was made, but the studio decided that this movie didn't do well enough to warrant funding the sequel Whedon had planned. Also, they had a schedule for the next movie that Tudyk and Glass were not available for, so there were some practical reasons when Whedon made this script. Of course, Whedon knew this when he wrote the script, so he made maximum use of what he could to add to the story knowing he couldn't use them for the next movie (Edit: He also knew there was a chance he wouldn't be able to make the next movie). I was never clear whether he had a third one planned to finish everything, or it was going to come to a "conclusion" in the second movie.

"I do, but I like to hear you say it" is probably one of my favorite lines in the whole series. It's very telling of River's connections to Mal. Not only here as in the bar on Beaumont. There was a distinct pause as River brought the gun around to face Mal. but even as early as in 'safe' when book is shot. I always felt that it was Mal's distress at books being shot that caused River to trip up while she was dancing

I mentioned before that we see Jayne's character and his character developement through his actions. They don't spell it out or tell us, but show us, because Jayne is a man of actions, not words. Previously rather than telling Mal he respects him or cares about him, he made sure there was a suit ready for him if the time came he needed it. Here, after Jayne talks about what Book told him about doing something right, he slides the bottle to Simon. He doesn't need to say that he accepts him now, or that they're a part of the same crew. He shows it through that action. Then when the ship is going down, Jayne is tossed about, BECAUSE he made sure everyone else was strapped in before himself.

@@julesreacts I know, it sucks that the comics were necessary to tell certain things, which should have been in the show itself. But... @@jeffburnham6611 The only actual retcon was how River got out of the facility. What you're talking about isn't retconning, because it didn't change any established canon prior to those events. This movie is miraculous in the way it manages to honor everything about the show, exceed it, break your heart but give you what you want in terms of emotional resonance and power. On a less emotional note, one small detail I always appreciate is the moment where the operative orders his soldier to stand down. He’s a terrible adversary, but once he’s lost he has no pettiness. The mission is over and he doesn’t hurt the crew without reason. It makes him such an interesting villain.

This movie is so bittersweet. Wins and losses, cheers and tears. It has it all. Two scenes in this show get me. On Maranda when River is carrying on, Jayne didn't complain about River, but agreed with and defended what she said. Second at the end when Mal is talking to Zoie. He is asking her how she is doing, but masking it by asking about the ship. Zoe's reply tells him how she is doing but acting like she is talking about Serenity too. That was some awesome writing there. This movie still gets me. On a side note. Rumor is Disney is in works to reboot the series. I don't know how you would feel about that, but me, I doubt anyone can find the sweet spot of cast writers and production they accomplished again. It's like lightning in a bottle.

Heartbreaking every time. The one moment - you know which - is the only time I've experienced a room of 150 people become simultaneously broken. Sobbing for a long time, indeed. And we had waited for two years plus. In time I came to terms with Firefly/Serenity coming to an end. A small part of me is grateful that (mostly) we got 13 episodes and a movie of near perfection that was never able to dip in quality or take wrong turns. A bigger part of me wishes it were still on the air now. But you are a true Browncoat. It never leaves you. Welcome to the family.

I've known all along this was going to be a heart rending experience for you. Having seen the emotional reaction you've had enough earlier episodes I was almost hesitant to watch this one. A small bit of good news though. If you can find it, Nathan Fillion and Allen Tudek stared in a short lived internet series called "Con-men", it helps to see them together again. Also if you haven't seen the series "Castle" staring Nathan Fillion, you'd probable enjoy it alot. It shows that there is alot of Mal in Fillion, In as much as he never seems to forget his crew. Most if not all of the "Firefly" cast turn up in cameos at one point or another. Plus the show is packed with "Firefly" Easter eggs.

Based on how much some of the TV episodes tore at your heart I knew you'd be in tears and sobbing at several points through this film. Thank you for being so "open" with your heart and sharing that with us. From my understanding, there was HOPE that this would spark enough returns to get a tv series or a film series re-booted. Unfortunately... due to HORRIBLE handling of the release and story/editing requirements for the film - (Should it be JUST for the Firefly -fans or does it need to re-hash a lot of the series points to bring in new fans who maybe never watched the series before seeing this film?) ...and the actors needed to sign contracts which would leave them available for possible sequel films and/or a continued series if this was enough of a box office success. Two of the main cast members could not immediately commit to that contract -- Alan Tudyk (as his career was taking off and he was already committed to several projects) and Ron Glass (as he was unsure of his health at this point in time)... so hard decisions were made to remove those characters from any future projects in this 'verse. There are quite a few cannonical comic/graphic novels which were given Joss Whedon's blessings to continue telling the stories of the crew - you might want to give those a read... some unanswered questions DO finally get resolved in those. Thank you again for your reactions to this series and this film. - I have exclusively tuned in to watch you watching these... I remember how intense my reaction was the first time I saw this movie in a theater. All things considered it gave me some kind of closure. Hard to believe how short this series was allowed to be and still can't believe some TV executive at Fox or elsewhere wouldn't have looked at this and said jeez we need maybe four more full seasons of this, and then a movie. Would have been a lot more time for all these characters who definitely deserved more. Still this is what we have and its great and I guess appreciate it for what it is.

Ah man, I think I forgot to leave a message on you last Firefly episode to steel yourself and have tissues for the movie… it was something else to see this in a theatre back in the day, being in a room with fellow browncoats, and feeling the same excitement and sadness, so many emotions that day. Edit: as to your pause to reflect on the quality, indeed. It’s funny you chose that moment to reflect on it looking so impressive, which is thx to them getting a much ledger budget than they ever had on the show, and the moment you choose I’d right after Mal talking about his crew needing to be paid… quite nice timing. There’s great symbolism that Mal war injury with the shrapnel that saves his life in the end from not being paralysed. It’s like his side of things, his fighting against the war saves him. But yeah, losing who we did hurts. First Book, then Wash… that line of his has been immortalised by Browncoat’s ever since, it’s such a crazy moment. In the audience I remember the feeling of communism excitement of pulling off crashing and burning, is saying the lines along with him I’m our head or mouthing them in our seat and then… yeah. Sudden abrupt death. I’m glad they gave him a hero’s death, no matter how much it hurts.

What a reaction. You broke my heart right at the beginning when you listed your hopes for each character, particularly Zoe and Wash. I don't know what would have been more difficult to watch: the way she soldiered on as best she could, or if she had broken down crying the way we all did. And when Mal asks her about Serenity's condition, and she says "She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true," we know they're also talking about her; that always breaks me too. On a lighter note, my favourite thing about Mal in this movie is the contrast between how cold, grim, and clearly stressed he has become compared to, or since, the TV series - right up until the very moment he's alone with Inara again. Suddenly he becomes the funny and warm Mal we remember, and returns to making goofy jokes in what I've always felt is a combination of trying to impress and amuse her, and an effort to diffuse or distract from the obvious tension between them. I hope you find the time to check out the outtakes, both from the series, and the movie. There are some real gems in there, and you can really tell this cast had a very special bond. I'm already looking forward to the rewatch - and to your next series! I can't wait to see what it is.

Mal was quite different throughout most of this movie but I loved when the Mal we know and love finally came out. He must have been through so much that he lost that playful side of him... that's actually just so sad... 😔
@takewithfood
@takewithfood Год назад
@@julesreacts It really is so sad. Mal had already lost so much to the war, and by the start of Serenity it feels almost as though he's somehow lost even more, and is at his lowest point yet. Kaylee's relationship with Mal is also telling: She's always been the conscience and heart of the crew; I think Joss once said that if Kaylee believes something, it's probably true. During the show she's always believing in and supporting Mal, always seeing the best in him, but after the time-skip to the movie, she's the one who is the most on his case about how he's treating Simon and River, as well as everything that seems to have gone down with Inara. Not even Jayne stands up to him as often as she does. She knows he is off course and not acting like himself, and being the good friend that she is, she isn't letting him get away with it. No one else mentions the Inara situation, but Kaylee won't let it drop. We all need a friend like Kaylee.

Thank you for the great reaction! More sad news. "Serenity" was intended to be the first movie of a trilogy - but only if there were more Box Office Sales. Back then there just weren't enough Browncoats buying theater tickets. Shepherd Book & Wash died because both actors already had other pending contracts and would not have been able to film Serenity 2 or 3 (had the Box Office sales supported a trilogy). We do have more Firefly in Comic Books & Novels. These include the important backstories of Shepherd Book, Inara, and other unanswered questions.

One of the most underrated parts of this movie is the Operative going to talk to Mal after everything is over. What Mal showed him took the most important thing he had: his faith. He had faith in the mission of the Alliance. Now, he's wondering how to go on without it. So he talks to the only man he knows who knows what that's like. I like to think the went a similar route to Shepherd Book after this.
@bryandoehler8962
@bryandoehler8962 Год назад
Since you have seen the movie now this is no longer a spoiler. One of the things the movie did not reveal was Shepard Book's background, however based on what we learned during the show I have a theory. We saw how Book knew a lot about weapons and criminal activity and that he is held in high regard by the Alliance. In the episode Message we learned that he knows about police procedures. The final clue comes in the last episode where River is reading minds. From Jane she gets "The money was too good, I got stupid" something Jane is deeply ashamed of. From Book she gets "I don't give a flying hump if you are inocent, so where does that leave you?". Which is likely from an incident he is deeply ashamed of. Putting all that together I think Book used to be a high ranking member of the Alliance police who did things he later became ashamed of. So he became a shepherd in part to atone for his sins.

And 44:04, it looked like you noticed River’s hand flexing on the grip of that weapon. I think, after that glance behind her, she knew that she could take them, and had the “how” of it worked out. Puhhh... Jules. You are torne up plenty, but you will fly true. I just know it. Really, thank you! Those were some of the most genuine and honest reactions I've ever seen. And I've probably seen thousands of reactions to hundreds of shows over the years. I do really hope that you stay with Whedon and react to Buffy next. But even if not, I am interested to see what comes next. Now its finally time for some trivia! 1st: Throughout the TV show River did destroy things that have the "Blue Sun" logo on it. When she tears up the cans with food in it, those have the blue sun logo on it. When she slices Jayne, he wears a blue sun shirt. The explanation is, that the Blue Sun company was the one torturing her. Think of the company like if Apple, Goodle, GM, Target, McDonalds, Microsoft were all one company and had the goverment in their pocket. The bbue hand guys are also from that company. It was planned that this would be a big storyarc over the seasons, but well... we all know what happened. 2nd Inara was termally ill ans thats why she left the temple in the first place, when she joined the crew. And thats also why she fought her feelings for Mal so hard and wanted to leave Serenity at the end of the show. They (at least to my knowlege) scrapped that for the film and brought her back. 3rd. Wash and Sheppard were killed off, cause the actors were not able to sign a multy movie deal because of other commitments. But Whedon had a deal for 3 Movies. So *IF* the movie wouldve been more profitable (it more or less only made its money back) there wouldve been 2 more and the Blue Sun company wouldve been one of the "Big Bads". 4th There are several novels who explain a lot of that and also what happened before. Specially the one about Book's backstory should be very interesting to you. So I wont spoil that if you are interested in reading it. 5th This show (and movie) is one of the main reasons why Whedon got the gig to write/direct the first and second Avengers movie. Because of his talent to mesh together an ensemble of completely different characters with all the drama and conflict that comes with it, as well as the strengh this can bring to a group. Not really a fact about the show, but I find that pretty interesting. Pretty sure I missed a view things. But others are welcome to ad more trivia about the best Sci-Fi show ever written.

I cry every time, partially for the characters, and mostly for the fact that we didn't get to see the rest of the story. Trivia - River's "safe word" (and I quote): "The phrase is "Eto kuram na smekh!," which per Whedon's typical attention-to-detail isn't mere random Russian babble but an actual saying derived from Old Russian. In Whedon's own words: "It's something my Russian teacher in England used to say. It means 'that's absurd.' Well, the words are literally 'that's laughter for chickens,' and that means 'that's absurd.'"
