After having decent luck with my first Firefly "Les Paul" style guitar, I decided to grab one of their Telecaster styles. These cheaper guitars seem to be a dice roll, but more and more they are competing with and in some way outshining more expensive brands.

I bought this guitar when it was first released. And I have absolutely zero regrets for having done so. I play it all the time and it's amazing, The pickups are not microphonic and the threts were perfect. The tuners Stayed in tune and I put Elixir COATED 9'S on it. I'm still in shock that this has not sold out because it is a amazing guitar. I'm Is playing it through a Fender Bassman amp

I am surprised it is still available on their website. It has one of the better looks and feature sets in my opinion!

Ha ha thanks. Finally hit 1k! I am surprised these particular models haven’t sold out. They are one of the more unique set ups firefly does.

I've got over 50 firefly's. Probably the worst things I've dealt with are: Early on, they made a run with over drilled holes and added shims and washers and I got a few of those. I fixed one that was loose by putting in bigger posts, the others I left alone and they play fine/really good, so no issue with them per say, other than that was a flaw they came with. Also, that was a very long time ago and I've bought 40 or so since then that never had that issue. Next, only on one of the LP relics, I did a truss adjustment and all the frets above 12 got wonky. That sucked and I had to level them. I kind of realized that these guitars don't have glued frets (even the stainless). I haven't had issues really with other one's getting that wonky, but that one was pure hell for a while and I almost returned it. Anyway, I'd say they take bumps pretty hard and the finishes chip pretty easy, but that's my fault usually when it happens, but I do notice they seem to show knocks pretty darn easy, so the finishes and wood aren't armored. I've done a couple drop fills and that's not a biggie, and it's not too much better or worse than anything else. So, that's the worst of my experience with 50+ guitars that I tweak on a lot. I've upgraded pickups and left most everything else alone (I like Alnico II's, and just on some of the LP's w/o alnico V's, but the one's they come in are fine). Frankly, I'm amazed they can sell guitars at this price point with all the features. They take a setup really well, usually, and now I have every possible guitar I could have ever imagined owning. They release awesome replica/clone guitars of some of the one's that I'd never be able to have (Monterrey JH, EVH's, SRV)....what's not to love? My current fave's are the relic strats and LP's and the Little Sister.......just amazing bang for the buck. Build a collection!

Thanks for the comment and insight into the early days! The prices seem to be creeping up, but as the QC and features seem to get better and more consistent, these are still solid guitars for what they cost hands down!

Copy of the Fender Troublemaker minus the Fender's mahogany neck. The Fender has Shawbuckers the look like these with the staggered screw poles. The usual FF alnico "hot peppers" humbucker pickups are a kludge of thick ceramic magnet pickup assemblies with a typical thickness alnico magnet and a spacer. Bobbins have integral spacer posts. They're microphinic because the steel keeper bar between the bobbin and the backplate is floating around, it's not clamped in hard between the bobbin and the pole piece. No amount of potting fixes that. If FF had done a full working kludge the magnet spacer would be wide enough and drilled to get the keeper tight against the bobbin. All that plus brass cover and brass backplates makes rehabbing them very spendy for Asian junk. You'd need correct length studs and spacer bars if you cut the spacer posts off the bobbins and pull the magnet soacer, might as well get high carbon content pole screws too. Too much for mystery windings. Get a set of handwound bootstraps from Ryan. Worth the trouble ordering and the wait to fulfill the order relative to price. He's got a set of Serranos/pablanos/hot-peppers with the rowdy bridge winding. I wanted this one but Annie at Guitars Garden wouldnt tell me what the fretboard radius is. Dont want their usual 16" Tele neck radius fighting with the 12" fixed radius bridge.

After measuring, the neck does seem to be 16". The bridge is cut somewhere between 12" and 14". just slightly flatter than 12". I may or may not file down the addles to match, since right now it doesn't feel off. But for lead work, I could see wanting that gap closed a little bit.

@@BaritoneGoatStudioI've had it with FF except for their rank and file Les Paul and 335 knock offs from known to be good factories, 06 and 60, 1st 2 digits of the serial numbers. So take the following with a grain of salt . The ebay Chender versions of this I've asked about have a 12" radius neck. This is just a shortsighted FF stupid mistake that they make over and over across time and through batch after batch. The fix is to re-radius the finger board and carefully reglue their frets back in or refret. Then you can upgrade the bridge anytime with having to refile string slots. Not a beginner's project. IMO not worth it for a maple neck. Refiling TOM string slots isn't a beginner's task either. How thick is the maple cap? Is it maple or the maple/poplar/maple plywood from the 338s that's made with maple veneers? As FF prices creep up and the more often they buy stock from questionable factories the closer they come to being actual rip off artists. They'll bury themselves eventually.

Mmm... not a guitar for me. I like Telecaster style guitars, but I don't want to invest a lot of work to make a unperfect guitar a bit better... I have to try a guitar and if this guitar makes me happy, it's the right guitar for me. I really like to customize guitars, but it must be very good right from the beginning. I try to buy used guitars, they are much cheaper than the new ones. I don't care if a guitar has some scratches, it gives the guitar personality and it's a part of its history. There are a lot of cheaper guitars on the market, and some are in a very good quality. I was surprised of the good quality of a Sire Larry Carlton T7... or of some used Schecter...

@@robertdonosobuchner3129 if it weren’t for the pickups on this, it would have been nearly perfect out of the box. At least as good as many others I have invested in. At $179 I can’t really consider too many others, even used that would beat it. I am impressed mostly with the frets and neck on this. Stainless steel frets and roasted maple alone were intriguing enough options, but I had low expectations about their potential quality. I am curious how long they can keep a guitar like this under $200? I don’t expect very long.
