Guitar, Gear and Recording. High gain metal focused! Name: Brian This project is based on 20 plus years of experience with guitars, gear, and exploration of studio recording methods.
“Baritone Goat” doesn't necessarily refer to long scale guitars, although they have been featured. It is actually an inside joke that popped up in grad school and stuck around. I do have a graduate degree in archaeology but prefer to mess around with music and chugging tones!

Personally I love these pickups. I have this set in my SG and LP. It’s a lot more PAF and vintage inspired, which is what I was looking for personally. They work great for my cover band and worship gigs. The mids are a lot more focused with these pickups, and they work for high gain, nothing dropped tuned. Like, I tried lower tunings and they just don’t work for that. Keep it in standard and/or Eb and these pickups can’t be beat IMO
@@BaritoneGoatStudio my LP and SG are both in Eb lol and yes, they are perfect for those kinds of guitars and more traditional tunings! I have a PRS with a set of H2’s that are more ideal for heavy dropped tunes. The guys from children of Bodom and lost society use H2’s exclusively
I'm picking up some vanilla and caramel flavors in the Blue Channel but the Red Channel is giving some strong aged angry oak with a hint of blood cherry. I'll take a bottle of the Red please.
I’m seriously considering buying one(already own 3 baritone 6)…. If it had an Evertune I’d buy 3!!!!!! how is tuning stability? Please respond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@sethculver1082 tuning stability is spot on. The Graphtec nut is smooth and the locking tuners are solid! The string through tele style bridge offers a decent resonance and feels good to play. An evertune version would be pretty sick. But they would probably charge $1500 for it!
@@BaritoneGoatStudio thank you for responding! Id absolutely pay the price( wink wink Schecter) it’s refreshing to have Internet personalities respond so quickly!! Thank you!
The only thing bad about Grassroots guitars are the name lol No but I’m very interested in getting one since even Burny and Tokais seem to be rising in price and the Yen is crashing right now.
@@13StJimmy I agree with the name and logo being a sorta lame. The edwards name isn’t bad, but logo they use looks kinda cheap too. ESP has a handful of logo designs that are questionable. But these guitars are killer for the price!
@@r.recofsky it is seemingly a direct clone in terms of function and features. Same control layout, including the gate. The circuit is based on a TS and the different “tight” settings are the same as the Precision drive which is a rotary switch tied to different filtering capacitor values to cut the low end. I don’t know if the cap values are completely the same, or if they use the same diodes. But the Argos is meant to be a substitute for the Precision Drive.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio Do you think it is worth paying more than US$200 for the PS when the Argos is below US$40? I don't know if it's worth the investment due to the cost/sound ratio, what do you think?
@@r.recofsky after getting to try a Horizon PD, I would recommend the Argos. I wasnt able to find anything about the Horizon pedal that made it vastly better than the Argos. I actually think the Argos has a better gate. It also isn’t a complete rip off like the demon FX version, which interestingly has a better clipping diode than the PD. I say grab the Argos if you want a decent boost/OD for modern high gain. If you check out my main video demo I go through all the different features, grater I hadn’t play an actual PD yet, but for $40 it can’t be beat.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio Thank you for taking the time to write all that information, your channel is very good, I didn't know about it. I ask you the last question since I see that you are full with the Gear, do you have in mind any other overdrive to push a tube amplifier that does things better than the Argos? I mean, to get that very high gain metal sound of modern metal.
@@r.recofsky I like having the boss SD-1 and Ibanez TS-9 on hand because ithehbare inexpensive and do a good job of tightening up an amp. But the Argos is more modern than either. The other two options are kind of expensive. The Highwind Direwolf, and the Lichtlaerm Audio King in Yellow. I have reviewed both pedals and they are my top two ODs on my board right now.
It is pretty compressed and can break up quickly, but it has a biting top end and lows are resonant but not muddy. I would say the Duncan invader is more of a wall of frequencies than the slug. The triple coil pickup also sounds louder since it has more mids and seems to be slightly higher output even only at 22k DCR.
Thank you for doing what Seymour Duncan couldn't and giving us a comparison between the OG and rails version. Rail seems to have tightened up the low end a bit and added a bit more clarity/bite in the highs. Would be curious to hear how the nazgul versions compare considering that the OG nazgul is already a pretty tight pickup
I really want to see all comparisons of Triad vs the world. But a Smart Selection of the world. Unorthodoxy is my headspace too. Talk to me and test to me! Go! Before distortion: Triad and Slug are definitely actuating in different note bands. Triad seems to be going for fullness with harmonics in every strum. Slug is almost no-harmonic, with six exact tones per strum. With distortion: differences are decreasing significantly with more fuzz. Red channel almost entirely erases the diffs. Btw, THANKS. I needed this info!
@@ikestoddard2458 yeah, by the time you get fully gained out, the only real differences are in the feel somewhat and pick attack. There is a bit more of a compressed transient that can be heard and felt in the room with the slug and the lack of real forward mids seems to sound slightly less saturated. But only slightly.
The expanded top end gives it more attack and it has less honky mids. With gain, chords seem to get a little fizzy and muted, but the chugs are more defined.
@@corriganpickups I had been playing both guitars a lot and kept thinking how close are they. The cleans are super different! But with high gain they both go to 11. The slug has the better attack and bite, but the triple coil sounds better for sustained chords to me and is more tonally mid forward like many modern active pickups.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio The dual rail design utilizing the magnets as the rails/pole pieces will add a lot of clarity and string to string definition. But I agree with your findings!
I like this because you showed an actual graph that shows the difference between the two. I like the fact that it retained its sound for the most part and just added more volume lol. Won’t be needing an overdrive pedal with these
It has a bit more push for sure. The waveform for the rails version is very telling. It still does sound like a JB in the mids, just has a little more oomph!
It was one that I demoed with no idea if I would like it, and after 10 minutes with the synth and clean ambient tones… I was like “guess I am buying this one”
any beginner buying a new low-end guitar shouldn't have to spend more replacing parts. It's basically a waste of money with zero return on investment. Logically, if they consistently grow as a player, they're certainly going to replace the guitar with something better. It's just a question of time
Beginners shouldn’t need anything replaced on a guitar to be playable. I like inexpensive guitars that can function from the factory, but also can be tinkered with to match preference. Historically, cheap guitars haven’t been the best for beginners due to their need for modification or fixing issues. That seems to be less the case these days. I still think going to brick and mortar shops to try out guitars is the best to way, even for beginners, to know if one is worth buying. Online buying, even expensive guitars, come with risk.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio well, whatever you like tinker with is fine, but not what the vast majority of beginner players need. Historically, cheap guitars were quite good as far as materials & build quality, and I've found quite a few over some 40yrs from the late 50's to early 70's that i've repaired & sold including several: Kays, Harmony, Silvertone, Stella, Danelectro, Vintage, etc...
@@rodnyg7952because I think it’s going to be worth the extra money to upgrade the guitar. Sometimes it is. Maybe that will help someone who’s considering upgrades.
@@adamstein9333 I am not a fan of Amplitube software overall. The Tonex capture stuff is decent, but the UI is bloated and clunky. For just having access to modeled amps, the STL platform is much better. They don’t have the licensed names of any of the amps, but they are clear enough to know what they are.
I just gotta say thank you SO much for this video. I have been wrestling trying to figure out whether I wanted the EMG 81s or the Fishman Fluences. And I’ve seen plenty of videos on both but they never touched the clean tones.
The clean tones on the Fishman stuff are just way more natural sounding than the EMGs. The addition of the single coil voice on all the models now make them a notch more versatile than the EMGs stuff. I still really dig the 81 for palm mutes and fast playing, but the fishmans have more chunk.
Not certain since I didn’t measure that specifically. But comparing to some of my Dimarzio pickups, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t any more than the mid 400mvs if that. The it seems to be just a tad louder than my dimarzio titan which is low 400s.
So i had tonehub, my dumbself decided to update and now its asking for a license. I tried to take the access code from my ILOK and it doesnt take it ( even though i bought it outright years bacck) its no longer taking the code> is there a way to download a previous version or revert back or is there a way around this
@@takesteadyaim88 they just switched from ilok to their own verification system. I have yet to make the switch with my Tonality Josh Middleton plug-in yet. The email I got said new codes were emailed to customers last year, I have yet to check that out. I would check your account email for stuff from STL and see what they sent out. Otherwise, reach out to their customer support.
@@resington no, you can still pay for it outright to get the Amp Hub lite and individually grab models. It would be crazy to only have a subscription available given how against it many are. They definitely make it seem like the lesser option on the site, and for $10 a month, the access and features don’t feel overpriced at all. I just wonder if more companies will follow suit as their amp catalogs grow. Developing plug-ins seems costly enough, and without a guarantee of success with any individual release, those who might pay monthly for access to stuff already developed could fund new products ahead of time. I would pay for a neural DSP subscription probably 😂 although they might not be able to keep it at $10 a month.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio it's a great price and plugin. Did a video on it when it was pretty thin on the ground with options. Now it seems to be very well rounded. Definitely up there with neural in quality. Vtaramps are still my go to though man. If u have a pc they're well worth a try. Megafuzzie MK4 is amazing!
there are three different IRs. The first is a York Audio Mesa Oversized. www.yorkaudio.co/product-page/mes-412-os-v2 The other two come from the Ownhammer EDVH Essentials pack. www.ownhammer.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=465
@@tyrannosaurusriffs me too really, never even considers a subscription until I tried this. If the updates are good and consistent, I may hold on to it.
You can still buy each amp individually as well so there’s an option for whatever works for you. I bought a few STL amps as I don’t see my self using more than a couple so the subscription seemed like a waste
@@joshrexben that is definitely what I had initially been wrestling with. Too many things I might not use. But the cab selection as well is super loaded. I could see myself using those more than certain amps. I may ended up grabbing the individual Framus Amps if I don’t fee like the subscription is worth it. With buying amp hub outright, do you get any of the models other than the Emissary? It had said on the site that the Amp Hub lite was still $99 and every model on top of that would be $49.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio oh nice I might need to check it out just for the IRs. If I remember correctly, I got it during a discount sale and it came with one amp for free so I think I got the amphub for $50 then I chose JCM 800 to go with it. I bought the Mesa Dual Rec and maybe the 5150 later on. I haven’t used it in a while because I was having some technical issues on my system with it but I really need to mess with it again. You got some nasty tones (in a good way) that is moving me in that direction. I should also add that as an IT dude I’m not really against the subscription model as it has its benefits for sure but like you mentioned, I feel like I’ll spend a lot of time messing with everything just to go back to the tried and true that I’ll use consistently lol
Thank you very much for that excellent demo 🙂🙂 I am currently re-building a Squier strat-SE model that I've had for many years into something dark and loud and I had several pickup options in mind, thanks to you I know the Seymour Duncan Slug is exactly what I was looking for 👍👍👍
@@sheharyarkhan2384 so one of the nice things about the STL stuff is that if you decided to end your subscription, you keep the player, and can then pay outright for individual amps that you might want. Each are about $49 a piece. I am going to see how robust the updates are each month and go from there.
Great video! We use the STL Josh Middleton a lot, interesting to see that amp sim world is moving to a subscription format much like some production plugins as you mentioned.
We will see if it catches on though. There is alot of opposition to the whole model, and the main thing that make STL appealing is the price point for the features. If someone is just starting out with amp sims, I could definitely see this as a way to figure out what you like before spending $100 on a single product. The Middleton plug-in is the other STL one I own. Has the best 5150 tone for me out of any plug-in.
Its a real bone nut on my 338. I got it 3 months ago(this video came out 2 months ago). If you want proof..Heat a needle red hot and test on the edge to see if it melts. Bone won't melt or show a burn mark, plastic will.
@@HulkSmash563 it is a very versatile amp. The only thing you might do in the future is try a different speaker. Some people like the 70/80 and some don’t. I think the tone is actually decent for high gain. I also think the newer DSL40CR with the added master volume comes with a Celestion V-Type instead. I have tried a Creamback 75 and a V30 in this and both gave me a little more bottom end and smoothed put the top end.

I just bought a Firefly FFLX explorer (transparent red) off Amazon for $200, they are normally $220 but there was a $20 off coupon. The guitar really surprised me. It played perfect out of the box. Frets were a touch scratchy but that went away after some playing. The neck is nice and chunky, and the pickups sound great through my half stack (not microphonic at all). The only down side is the flame is almost non existent, but the fit/finish is spot on. It has red binding around the body and up the neck that looks amazing. It just plays great and sounds fantastic, and I am floored how good it is for $200. I would buy another one.
I think these guitars are mostly great for the price. There have only been a handful of horror stories that I have seen and confirmed myself. But on average the quality seems to be worth the cost in most cases. The only models I have seen have consistent issues are the strat models. I think though one you start adding floating bridges to the mix the chance for issues goes up.
