Jay, About 7 years ago I made 4 of this type of chair from an old article in popular woodworking. Your design and instructions are much better. But, too late for me. I wanted you to know that my chairs do not have that brace on the lower part of the legs and they are still strong and wobble free, so I think you will find yours to be the same. These chairs are very comfortable.

The Daddy-Daughter clips made my heart melt. What a little sweetheart she is! The fact you can grill meat on that fire pit edge scares the life out of me. That edge gets SO hot, have you considered fabricating a wooden surround to buffer little hands away from the fire pit edge? One touch of a tiny hand will produce 2nd or 3rd degree burns! Yikes! Oh yeah, the chairs are awesome!
@JayBates
@JayBates 2 года назад
You'll see a lot of these in built-in designs. This is done for both looks and also to prevent people from touching it. However, I don't have any wooden surrounds or deterrents from keeping my daughter from touching our hot kitchen stove either. We have rules in place and she understands boundaries. Education is the best prevention in my opinion. When the firepit is going we are all aware of the situation and continuously teaching her the dangers and why we stay away from the danger rather than just saying "don't touch!" And just like with the stove, we don't leave the fire unattended in the event that she tries to see what she can get away with.

Jay - I've ordered a number of your plans for a few projects - the bunks for one that I converted to triples in an L shape. Great to see another that I'll add to the list. I made some similar with straight oak and fabric for seating surface. Great job.

I bought your templates when they were first available. I made four chairs for me from Western Red Cedar and finished them with a teak oil and spar urethane blend. I made two more sets from White Oak, finished with an oil/wax, for my 2 kids after they saw mine. I'll never buy another set of plans or templates ever again. I'm approaching 70 years old and that was more work from my "hobby" than I wanted! lol (just kidding) But my gf is thinking about new chairs with hard maple for the legs and walnut for the slats. I told her to go to....the shop and make them herself. lol Edit: Thumbs up for the Ted Alexander hat! Ted's a good friend of mine and I miss his RU-vid channel!

Great video Jay. I bought the template a year ago with the thought of making a chair for me in my shop. It served me well in the evenings after working in the shop. Little did I know that my wife Michelle had other plans for my chair… she made it HER chair.

I've spent many, MANY, hours in one of these chairs watching my daughter's soccer games. It's super comfortable and way better than crappy fabric chairs that break all the time. It's been one of my favorite projects to date, and I've even sold a few to other soccer parents! I use my original template as my working template. If it mess them up, Jay gets more of my money! 🙃

@TheRPhelps24

Did you incorporate the cross brace in the bottom piece?
@gpdoyon
@gpdoyon 2 года назад
@@TheRPhelps24 I did for all of my chairs. Like Jay said, it's the hardest part of the chair but it gives a nice accent/look to the chair. My only "problem" with all versions of the chair (pine, plywood and oak) is that the point between the two halves of the chair meet and hold all of the weight tends to crush in. So, if you stain the wood a dark color (or paint it!) it becomes very noticeable after a while. But, since the chair is in a stored/collapsed configuration most of the time it's not noticeable. Still, I love the chair!
@rjmills126

Jay, i just purchased your MDF templates, love the design. In this video you are using 1 screw on each side of the slat. On your website where you purchase the templates, that shows 2 screws per each side of the slat. Do you think 1 screw will be adequate? Or 2?
@JayBates
@JayBates 2 года назад
I think one screw is fine. Considering the joint is somewhat mechanical restricting movement in and twisting and then is secured with glue and then pinned with a screw...I don't think there will be an issue with using one screw per slat.

I built a half lap design similar to this years ago with the frame cut from 2x8 cedar. While they are still in service and I have planted my 200# butt in them more than once I don't trust them for loads much over 200# because I feel the half lap is a weak point.

@johannes.f.r.
@johannes.f.r. 2 года назад
I think I would feel better about the longevity of the chair woth a bottom brace in. The slight racking of a person sitting on it will put quite a bit of strain on the one screw and glue joint in the slats on the other end. I've had single screwed slats come loose over years of use on far more rigid designs than this.

So each piece of wood was only big enough for one side piece (with a lot of waste). Would it have been possible to glue the wood together then cut nested side pieces? Then you can utilize the wasted wood better. And since you are gluing edge grain it should be plenty strong. Or am I missing something? Of course the grain pattern will be different. Is that it?
@JayBates

Absolutely. Gluing a panel will be the best use of material. The offcuts here went into the cutting board stack.
