Even in the face of precision guided missiles, tanks have continued to dominate the battlefield. Todays battle tanks are high-technology war machines, with everything from depleted-uranium armor to computer-aimed guns. Take a look at today's most potent main battle tanks from around the world: the sleek American M1 Abrams, the British Challenger, the French Leclerc, and the German Leopard 2.
In this documentary, part of the Firepower video series that aired on the Discovery Channel, design experts talk about their newest designs for battle tanks.

Absolutely correct OlderG0ds, demonstrating your knowledge by referencing the Maginot Line there. The French armed forces have, statistically speaking, a superb record in conflicts. Very high class.

the real advantage of this system and it's reason is that with one crew member less: first: one casualty less in case the tank is destroyed (and also second: you pay less soldiers, so it's about 1300€ a month saved for the country)

Interesting, good point. I've heard people say Leclerc was the lightest before too, but it does seem T-90 is lighter.

Those are four sweet tanks. I adore them all. However, I think I might be partial to the ol' LeClerc, the French are pretty good at tank-building....i like their style... but wow, it would be so hard to pick a 'best' from this list. I'll think I'll just assume they're all pretty wicked! Thank you very much for the video. Oh, and a big 'hey!' goes out to all my tread-head brothers in Canada, Germany, and France.

You're the first American I see on youtube defending France against this kind of infantile and stupid remarks. Thank you. I'm just so tired of seing videos with french militaries (even french videos) where we're called cowards by Americans (not Germans) who know absolutely nothing about that war, because 72 years ago, our great-grandparents have been defeated... It's really nice to see an American who actually knows history, and learned it with objectivity.

@108Dax as a loader for the Leo 2 hell in the greek army,i can confirm that human loader has slightly better rate of fire....the main advantage is the rate of fire for the first two rounds.loader loads first round in,and holds second round allrdy between his legs,makin next shot needin 3 secs to load....and usually a tank doesnt need third shot :D

@OlderG0ds incorrect The Leclerc has that many automated system such as the loading system or guns communication technology ect, because it is the most recent of the 4 tanks

@johnyjoe2 Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) was developed in France before 1940. After France fell those engineers who created it were evacuated to Britain and there joined and improved it for British guns. But I think Germany is technically the first to make modern sabots they used in AA guns. I don't know who used them first in tanks.

@108Dax btw,greek army has some arty 155mm cannons,both manual loaded,and auto loaded.....human lader is confirmed to load faster there

@Scotty4210 Yeah, it's really just a software issue. All a tank really needs is an "AA mode", where the rangefinder keeps updating its distance information which is then used to predict the movement of the aircraft. Of course the hit probability with just one round sounds ridiculously small, but as for example the Otomatic SPAAG and naval guns of up to 120 mm have shown, it's completely feasible.

I question the practical usefulness of the smoke wall triggered by a human operator. The assumption was it could be use as a protection only if the tank survived the first attack.

@HortonofDOOM Yes the hole is pretty small think of those AP rounds like an arrow, long and skinny and lots of force concentrated into a small area. Pokes a hole in it and sprays molten hot metal usually killing most/all of the crew.

@108Dax You may think so, but a fast human loader can actually load more rounds per minute than an autoloader. There are other disadvantages of autoloader such as carrying less rounds because the machinery takes up a good amount of space. I suspect there's a good reason the best tanks in the world (M1, Cr2, Leo2) all have manual loading.

the peri to gun and gun to peri is actualy taken from the m1a2. still the us and germany had alot of knowlege sharing in tank design. so i love the leo2 and m1 series of tanks. both extremly well desiged... exept for the m1s engine ugh :( but that will change upgrades is in progress

@OlderG0ds errrrm actually. it's possible for a tank to hit a fighter jet. step 1: put a tank on a high terrain or hill step 2: make sure your tank can fire in a high angle step 3: when a fighter jet comes in, hit it as fast as you can before it escapes

The Russian are Popular for Compacting everything into a small area, so it is same in T-90, it can jump higer and maybe is faster the Lec.

@johnyjoe2 actually no... The 17 pounder AT gun used by the British in WW2 was the first gun to use sabot shells... That's why it was the best AT Gun

@goliathlup1 Well regardless of how realistic the threat is I was just expression my opinion on that. And yes have some protection against EMP, at least the Leopard 2, Challenger 2 and M1 Abrams do.. They have NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection systems and the Abrams electronics are lined with heavy lead to further protect against EMP.

Poland betrayed France before the ww2 like five times, which basically started the war. Yeah, France could fight a little longer, but they didn't really have a chance.

Not to disagree with you, entirely, but the French Army after the First World War had been so decimated and demoralized that many French soldiers, including officers, desserted their posts in 1941. It may seem unfair to label them cowardly, knowing that many died on their feet, yet the French had the most powerful army in Western Europe. Even a comparison of French Armor compared to German Armor, the French had a clear advantage in manpower and firepower.

It´s strange how they didn´t even mention Russian tanks in this episode. I think t-90 and t-80 should be shown because they are modern MBT´s.

Quite funny, Leclerc weights 54.5 tonnes and the Russian T-90 is 52.4 tonnes. Also I dislike how t-90 isn't mentioned in here at all...

All of which was good if the french high command wasn't set into another trench warfare and blind to the warning coming from germany. It wasn't the french soldiers fault but the high command.

@goliathlup1 EMP? I don't think that is a realistic threat at this point. Very complicated and expensive to make non-nuclear EMP weapons, which has poor range and delivery method.

@uffir Uh T-90 is older than Challenger 2 if that tells you anything. Not saying it's a bad tank it's pretty good actually but not the best and this stuff seems to be not fond of Russian hardware

Its incorrect to say that leclerc is the lightest MBT in the world. Sinse T-64 all soviet/russian MBTs has a lighter weight. T-90 ~47 t Lec. ~55 t

@GenaMetagen Yes, because M1 Abrahm is a Massive tank, i think it is about 72 tons or something, that is the western culture, building something stronger and bigger, but in asia or East, they do it the opposite way. But yea u r correct T-90 is lighter than Lec.....when i heard i said, "wait a min, that couldn't be correct, what about t-90"

Well that one doesn't count. We we're under British rule. Anyway The French still helped us win our revolution. Later on they gave us the Statue of Liberty to remind future generations that the French use to have the balls to win or even fight.

i rather create a cheap but very fast tanks~ althought could not match the tanks like abrams but abrams only have a small amount at its dispose. if you have 5 abrams i shall use 20 very fast tanks and charge at you and hit you in point blank range or out flank you~ since they say that tank which are faster are harder to hit in this show~

@kolinmartz Alright come on now, France has fought many many wars, and won a hell of a lot of them. and they get labeled as surrendering pussies because of WW2. Seems a tiny bit unfair. The Germans pretty much steamrolled over all their neighboring countries, I guess we could expect France to put up more of a fight, but they had inferior tactics and had put all their eggs in one basket with the Maginot line, which Germans simply bypassed. They would have been slaughtered if they kept fighting.

the more technology and computer shit ther is in a tank the worse it is i think, because i wonder what would hapen if lets say electronic fails ? what if loading system doesnt work ,,,, is there a manual option ? anyway in time of battle when you have 10 sec max i dont think the dude operating the computer will start tiping like hell :D i mean what more do you do ? lokate the target and fire "thank you come again" stupid electronic shit, completely usless in an intence battle
