Are fires on our trains rare?
Variety of clips about fires on trains from around the world including the UK featuring Northern Rail, Southern, & SouthEastern but don't worry you are in safe hands with safety trained railway staff who know what to do in an emergency.
Or do they?
Listen to the train drivers announcement @ 09:40 (He appolgises for the late running of his train unaware of the smoke billowing out from the rear of the train or the fact that the passengers have started to let themselves off the train onto the railway tracks!)
What is the worst thing that could happen?
Contains scenes some viewers may find upsetting
Remember DOO is safe

Extremely rare. I've been travelling on trains for 40 years and I've never seen a fire on a train, and I don't know anyone who has. Clearly it does happen, but extremely rarely.

The driver in the last video did everything wrong, first of all he should have checked his train for the reason for the alarm being pulled, secondly he should have started his call to the signaller with 'this is an emergency call' this prioritises the call over any other call.

Self evac could cause electric shock if there are powered 3rd rails. A lot of people don't know there is a powered third rail on some railways, so they might think it is safe to touch when you could get shocked.
@AndrooUK
@AndrooUK 2 года назад
Smoke kills in seconds, not minutes or hours... The driver has fault for not bothering to make an announcement or anything, and possibly the train operator is at fault for not having clear evacuation instructions and mechanisms. Also, 'do you need a block' is just stupid. Block immediately if there's a fire, an tell passengers to stay off the tracks and evacuate away from the tracks or go to another carriage. The whole thing was terribly executed by the train company and staff, if accurate. Don't blame the passengers. Most aren't autistic and into trains like most people watching and commenting on videos like this... hindsight is a wonderful thing.

At 13:00 once I heard the passcom alarm. I would take the call as initially trained to do so. If I got no response. I would as a precaution stop the train and check to see if there is any smoke and upon seeing the smoke. I would call the signaller with the following line "Emergency Call from Train 2D36 (or whatever its number was) at location with the signal number (example: at signal location AE55 or Alpha Echo Five Five), quote milepost number is available and followed by a request of a block of both tracks and shut down of the train supply of the third rail with a call for medical and fire services as my train is on fire and I can see thick smoke from the rear part of the train". Then I would as soon as I was informed that the block and the supply rail shutdown was implemented. I would release the doors on the cess side of the track where it is safer to evacuate the passengers and help anyone get down from the train if I could safely do so. Its best to sit on the floor of the vestibule and jump down as its the safest way with less likely of an injury. I would make sure that all passengers were walking on the lineside and not in the cess or anywhere near the other line because although the power would be off. Diesel trains may be operating in the area that is still a danger to the passengers and could have passed a signal nearby before the block was in place. If I could not stop the train if for example I was in a tunnel or on a viaduct. I would repeatedly say can all passengers on coach 8 please move into the next coach due to a fault. I would use something like this as to not alarm passengers in the other coaches that are not affected. Then as soon as its safe to do so, I would get all passengers off the train as soon as its safe and where there is no further danger.
