I'm American & I'm so pleased to have found this (after reading a recent brilliant op-ed of Rory's); I read "The Places In Between" AND gave it for Xmas gifts that year. One recipient was an Irishman who had done NGO/UN work in various spots (with his own list re: socks, etc); he's a tough audience & had praised it.

Hi there. I've just discovered Rory Stewart and though I'm from a very different UK background from him, must say he's an amazing guy. He's made of what the great explorers from the past were made from. In fact I would say that in today's world he's a very unique personality. I've just started 'The places inbetween' and find it fascinating. To walk across Afghanistan solo takes a pair, and he's certainly got that! Something else I'd like to mention is that here is a man from a privileged background using that privilege to improve the lives of others, rather than becoming 'successful' for himself. I think this is part of his greatness
