Firing the Biggest Clay Pot I ever made

This adobe brick kiln works well to fire pottery. I recently made this large pot from raw earth sourced in the pit next to my hut. This pot will be used to collect and store water.
The process for firing this pottery is simple.
1) I place some wood and kindling in the kiln.
2) Then I light it with hot coals collected from the fireplace in my hut.
3) I allow all the wood to burn down.
4) Then I push the coals and ash away from the middle and place two bricks in the center of the kiln.
5) I place the pot on the bricks.
6) I stack dry branches of wood all around the pot.
7) The hot coals will slowly catch fire and soon all the wood will be engulfed in flames.
8) The fire will burn for about 30 minutes.
9) The next day after the fire burns out the pottery can be removed from the kiln.

Hey Chad! If you add green matter to the fire once the pot is almost done, it will have a soot layer that you can rub into the clay. This not only looks good but it can make the pot water resistant. Get more info on this from the Cherokees. Examples are at several museums but my favorite is in Chicago at the Natural History museum. That one has a rounded body with a square lip and it is scored with diagonal lines not often seen in Cherokee original art. Do the soot layering inside and out for a near water proof pot!

Please fabricate some more and use them to cover most of the killn's upper opening to prevent heat loss and to save firewood. @Chad Zuber, have you made Gin from the Juniper berries around your hut? Have you made distilled alcohol at all yet? I think that would be super useful to you there at the hut. Not only is it tasty, but also at a high proof, you could use it as fuel, like in a lamp, perhaps? I bet that would be a bright flame, or if not bright, hot. Perhaps you could design a sort of alcohol stove to use for cooking when the weather is very hot. Additionally, I think ethanol can be used as a refrigerant? I'm looking at this video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V3abp-Tw6sI.html

Wild clay is a lot softer then the store bought stuff. So when shaping the pot you can expect a lot more drooping that may cause cracks when drying. You must also bear in mind that there was no assistance from a pottery wheel. You should also account for the fact that the firing method use is not as predictable as an electric or gas kiln
