Firing a salute in San Diego Bay. These are 2 of the 4 deck guns aboard the revenue cutter Californian, out of the Maritime Museum of San Diego. In battle they would fire 6-pound balls about a mile, using 2 pounds of black powder. In this salute it was powder only - half a pound in each gun - lest we take out a high rise or something.
The Californian is one of several historic ships from the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and is used primarily for educational programs for school groups. The Californian is a replica of an 1860s revenue cutter (law & tax enforcement ship) that patrolled the California coastline around the time of the gold rush.
