If "use original cable" and "connect as 'Storage'" was mentioned in the software, I wouldn't be here! So that little bit of extra text would be a huge usability improvement for the Olympus Workspace. In German, it says to connect via "a USB cable" (no mention about using the original one which has some special interference suppression). This was the culprit for me - also there are like 6 ways to connect the camera so you're kind of at a loss which one to use. But luckily, there are Olympus RU-vidrs to get help 😊 Thank you!

Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! You do make it look simple. I'm going to bookmark this video to look at on 2 Jan 2021. I've heard it is best to make sure the update is without problems. So waiting a month should not be that much of a problem. The camera still works fine right now. (And most of the birds have gone south for the winter!)
My experience of the latest firmware update is not good. We updated one of our studio E-M1 ii bodies with the latest firmware and then compared the "improved video stabiliser" to the non-upgraded body. We found the non-upgraded body to be far smoother when walking and in most situations where we use the bodies handheld! Even an older original E-M1 body was better. It seems the adjustment to the panning movement has resulted in the system picking up walking yaw movement as a pan and just "letting go" resulting in jumps to the left and right when you are not panning. Based on this, we will not be updating the firmware on the M1X and M1.3 bodies nor the second M1.2 body until such time as this issue is resolved to our satisfaction.
Do not install v1.3 for the E-M5III it breaks BT/WiFi and I had to use the SD card method to go back to v1.2. I have contacted Olympus support so hopefully they can fix the new firmware soon.
US support was able to replicate the issue on one of their test units. No idea how long it will take them to issue an updated firmware. For now everyone with an E-M5III should stay on v1.2.
@@ForsgardPeter I’m going to assume that the fix will be v1.4 and v1.3 will never be seen again. Thanks for the update! Today turned into a “fun” day setting up my camera again from scratch, this time I documented all my changes so if I need to do this again it won’t take as long. The E-M5III really needs to have the settings backup feature.
Daar Peter, very helpful, I just update the firmware (from 1.1 to 1.4) of my OM D E-M10 II. Unfortunatelty all the settiings were gone. Language on English instead of Dutch, copyright info gone etc. So I went back to your tips for best settings.
I had a problem getting my OM1 to connect to my new Pixel 8. If you are using OIShare, this is my fix. In the initial connection between the two devices, I'd go through the "Easy Setup", scanning the ORCode in EasySetup. It would establish the BlueTooth Connection but in the second step to connect via WIFI it would fail. The work around was to go to the Camera... Menu to the WRENCH, page 4. Down to the "Little Phone Icon -Settings" and change the Connection Security from WPA2/WPA3 to WPA2. The Pixel 8 and the camera then hooked up like "Two Old Bud" meeting for a cold beer!
Having reached retirement age in The Blue Mountains West of Sydney, I am retiring my Tree-Lopping gear too, I intend getting serious about my love for everything Olympus. I bought a Zhiyun Weebill 2 pro+ Gimbal, have many lenses from collecting kits on eBay, including many of the 4/3 series with an adaptor. I also kitted out both Sons, and swapping around lenses is always an option. I am now prepared to upgrade from my silver EM1, my EM5 will be my spare with different lens options. The Mk-ii & Mk-iii are both known as compatible with my gimbal, I suspect the EM1-X will be too. I plan on mounting my 12-40 f-2.8 pro on whichever upgrade I choose, money is not a main issue, but as always I am careful when I buy. Any thoughts Peter ? I follow your channel enthusiastically; your efforts are much appreciated thankyou. 🙃🏁
Interesting it can be done with the phone app, But think I will use a cable from a PC. Just don't trust a camera to phone connection, as I dont know what happens if the phone connection is lost. iPhones have been known to drop connections
Always seem to have a problem updating with Windows; good news is that it always seem OK on the Mac. EDIT: Same problem again on Windoze, update identifies the camera and lens, downloads and then when it starts to install says cannot find camera. Worked fine on the MacBook and quicker.
I had issues when updating my EM-1X. I had to remove the memory cards (256GB Lexar) from my camera before the camera updater would connect to it. I was using the included cable and the latest Workspace version.
I just updated to the latest firmware in my E-M5 mk III. Everything went well, camera works perfectly but wi-fi/bluetooth stopped working. When I turn on wi-fi and try to connect to the OI Share app, scan the qr code, start the setup, the app waits for bluetooth connection and after a minute it disconnects saying it cannot find the camera. Odd thing is, when i turn on wi-fi, i cannot see it in my local networks either, tried it on 2 Android devices and also on an iphone. Nothing worked. I tried factory resetting the camera, resetting the network settings on all my devices, and also fresh instal of OI Share app on each device. The issue is still there. This firmware bricked the wi-fi module on my E-M5 MK III and cannot connect it anymore. I'm curoius if any other E-M5 MK III owners have this issue.
Hi Peter. Just in case you get inquiries about this issue, the new Apple Macs running the M1 chip are not compatible with Olympus software yet and updates aren't possible at this time. I spoke to Olympus USA today. They are aware it's a big problem and are working on a software fix. Fortunately, as you mentioned, the E-M1 can be updated through the O.I. Share app so that's a bonus!
Not very consumer friendly just to update the firmware by using a huge photo editing program of the size of Lightroom. And remember you need to use the original usb cable to do so.
Avoid updating firmware late at night when you are tired. If you unhook your camera before you’re supposed to, the circuit board ceases to exist. Just a $430 repair. Sharing this story for a friend.
@@johngyorki2569 I get your point. But Oly does warn you to wait for a certain screen to come up before unhooking.. which I didn’t do. After I did that the camera didn’t power up.
My 300mm f/4 pro lens got bricked during update process. The EM1 II was updated but during the llens firmware updating, the software did not detect the camera and lens for a long time hence I tried to reset the process. It caused the lens to be inoperable. Such a hassle and stress for a brand where you're paying thousands of dollars.

Still doesn't work with an M1 chip machine. I get caught up in a security loop. UPDATE: I was able to finally get it to work on my EM1 mark II. The cable that came with the camera must be plugged into a hub that supports the older and slower USB protocol.
Don't have the original cable for my E-M1 Mark II, and neither Olympus nor any of the dealers here have it. Are there any non-Olympus brands that will work?

I have Panasonic GH5 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm F1.8 Fisheye PRO I did exactly as you did and it shows me this error: Unable to detect the camera. Chech if the camera is correctly connected to the PC!
Hello Peter. When I connected to a PC via USB cable, my OM-D E-1 Mark II used to show the menu you have in this video, and I would use the Storage option and go to OM Workspace (current version. Used to use the old Olympus updater software years ago.) However, now when I plug the camera into multiple Win 10 and 11 computers, I do not get that screen. I get "One Moment" then a black screen. On my PC I get the E-M1Mark II showing, but not the SD cards. It appears the PC does not recognize the camera as a storage device necessary for firmware upgrades, etc. Besides original Olympus cable, I also tried other USB cables, same result. There must be some camera setting I cannot find that upon USB connection will show the menu you have in your video. It appears to be something about the USB Connect option on the camera. Thanking you in advance for your help.
Have you tried to boot the computer and taken out the battery from the camera. Check also the menu system and see what the options are for USB-connection.
Hi, I was updating the latest firmware to my o-m1x unfortunately the battery power failed at stage where it says to switch off and restart. Now the camera wont switch on. any thoughts?
I have had problems with cables too. Even sent my EM1 mk3 back to OM. They couldn't explain why it wouldn't work on usb C with my MacBook as they didn't have one. Also they were not able to tell me how to actually Id the correct OM cable that I had mixed up with all my other cables. OM need to get his sorted :(

I just had to use the OM usb cable plugged into an adapter as new MacBooks only have usb C ports which obviously don't fit the OM usb A lead. If you can feed that back it would be great. I tried with customer services but they just stated they didn't have any MacBooks :(
Updating through Olympus Workspace is surely the easiest of any manufacturer. No need to download a ZIP file, expand it, copy it to a memory card etc etc.. the software does everything for you through just a USB lead connection to the camera.
Yes.... if it works via Workspace ... but for some it does not.... and Oly/OM has no fix except via SD by their tech support! Which requires a visit to Oly or wait for a store support day.
Too bad that Olympus did not take advantage of updating their software for the em5markIII so that we can save the personalized settings on our computers as is the case for the om5II, om1II etc ...
Wanted to see if I could update my old camera. I got Olympus Workspace up and running fine, but hitting the upgrade camera button does nothing. It just minimizes the program and then opens it again. nothing new pops up. Reinstalled it many times, nothing. I think this program is officially broken.
Where can you buy the USB12 cable. It's not on the accessory's page. Bought the EM5 Mark III from Keh, with no cable. Camera is still on stock 1.0 firmware.

This is least to say frustrating, I tried updating the firmware on 2 different computers on two separate days and I cannnot get the Olympus Workspace to connect to the server. Is this already dead? I am starting to regred my purchasing decision - this software looks awfully outdated and the company seems to be on a downward spiral.
@@ForsgardPeter i managed to diagnose the problem, workspace wouldn't connect throught my WiFi for some reason, but it connected fine through phone tethering. The updater is included in the workspace nowadays. Thanks for replying!
Is there anything worse than Olympus software? I have constant problems connecting my camera to my computers.... still not working..... I’m so glad I kept all my canon gear......it works flawlessly every time....
Sorry to hear hat you have problems. It is very hard to say ehat the problem is. There are so many different variations of computers and the components. Then there is the possibility that there is something wrong with the connection.

The new app is called OM Image Share and when I click Camera Management it doesn't show firmware or a way to update firmware. Any ideas? BTW, thanks for this video. I was able to update my EM5.3 by using the computer. I don't have a cable to plug my OM10.2 into the computer so I'm trying to use the app.
Trying to update 3.3 to 3..4 on E-M1ii via Olympus Digital Camera Updater. Click Storage, "One Moment" on camera screen persists. No further action. 100% camera battery charge and laptop plugged in. Using original Olympus USB cable. Any suggestions?
It is hard to say, but it can be that computer blocks the connection for safety reasons. Have you firewall and/or virus protection on? Other access authorization can also be an issue, Unfortunately cannot help with computers.

There is an issue in Android as when connected to a wifi the cellular data are not working. I saw in your video you are using iPhone. Thanks for replying
It is a special plate that is Arca-Swiss compatible. I never forget the tripod plate when I go out and film my videos. Got a few years ago from eBay and unfortunately I have no idea what the brand is.
Peter, This is not your problem , but why do you need to keep clicking so many times in order to complete the update ??? This doesn't look like a friendly update. ???? I don't care about birds , so I rather skip this update , ... better then messing up my cameras. I don't get it ?? Why Olympus can't make it easy for the users like other brands do ??? Copy the update file on SD card, put it in the camera, and auto detect will start the process and you simply press GO ... , and in a few minutes all is done ????
May I know if the EM1X finally have the newer face eye af system from the em1iii? The one where it detects multiple faces and you select the faces using the joystick.

Cannot update my OM-D EM-1.2 This has to be the WORSE update procedure. Why not just place the firmware bin file on the SD card like Nikon or Panasonic.

Same here. "Failed to communicate with the server. (0x80041022). SD card is removed, and I'm using original cable. Battery 100% charged. Connection is good. Internet good.
Word of warning. I took your advice and updated the Lumix 12-32 lens I have on my OM-D Mark 2 and the lens fried. Black screen. Dead. I should have left it alone.

I downloaded this on my EM1 iii, (no issues), my camera confirms the firmware was updated, BUT I cannot see the focus indicator during manual focusing. Hello Peter. I have all sort of problem with updating my EM1.2 using Olympus Workspace. I tried to use IO.Share on iOS but there is not an option to update firmware on my version of IO.Share. What version of IO.Share you are using?

Sometimes there is more time to go over the script before hitting the record button. Sometimes there is not. Language is also one big issue. English is my third language so it takes a lot concentration to get the right things to say. I totally see your point and I am trying.
Funny how this is such a problem for so many. I use the cable. I connect the software. I follow the directions. Have applied multiple updates to multiple Olympus cameras over multiple years. SD card copy routine another viewer mentioned for another brand seems no easier or harder, it is just what people are used to. Fully charged battery, follow the steps. Of your camera is working fine and you don't need the update, then skip if you wish. Kind of like sensor cleanings in regard to the mystery and fear that seems to surround this task. 🤔
The SD card method is safer. No need to worry about Internet or computer connect failures. Also easier when on the road. I'm not impressed with the Workspace method.. The Tech Service uses an SD card when updating. Does that tell you anything?
ya know,, these video's are so freaking frustrating,,, let's just leave out the part about how to connect the ipad to the camera,, because it won't,, because it's connected to the wifi, so how is it suppposed to update without internet.
@@ForsgardPeter and maybe you should mention that in video (sim card), cause i spent like an hour trying to update it with my ipad io.share. till i tried it with my phone,, and then it came up with some other problems.
