Well done Rob on your first attempt at euro nymphing, that brownie was a great result in poor wind conditions. Even Karla looked impressed. Cheers 👍

Thanks, it surely was hellish windy. Finding now with heavier nymphs the casting is much easier.

I do/did a lot of "tight line" (can't call it "Euro" when it's really an evolution of Joe Humphrey's nymphing style) nymphing. It kind of becomes addictive, for no other reason than you catch a lot of fish, lol. From what I gather, it looks like you got it because honestly, there's not much to it. The fish was beautiful. I fish NY/VT/MA (all, great places for this kind of fishing) and if I ever make it to your country, would like to try it for grayling.

Hi Rob I met you at Chollerford last year on the TAS water. Have a look at Fred Bainbridge’s videos for some tips on nymphing he really is a master at it. I learnt it for the same reasons you are to try and tickle the salmon out in summer.

Takes some getting used to this method. Try a bigger indicator section, not as sensitive but better for knowing if you have a bite. I’ve found that helps. Let it go through the water slowly at the same pace as the water. Got to be natural. Strike a lot! Amazing how many times it’s a fish. Keep the rod tip up high and arm outstretched (aches until you get used to it). Loads to write on this but I’ve found the above all helps. Hope of use. 👍

Cheers, I'm going to have tie in something thicker (or get glasses)

Hi Rob nice to see you out trying the nymphing, couple of things that might help although i could see the wind catching your line a bit always a nightmare with a euro rig and either upstream or downstream wind, from your point fly to your dropper should be about 50-60 cm apart first section of straight leader from the sighter should be equal to the deepest part of the river your fishing which you usually adjust to suit the depth during your session depending on the water in front of you at the time also some heavier tungtsen euro nypmhs on both droppers you want to feel your point fly almost dragging or bouncing your heaviest point fly will pull the other one's down into the feeding zone try either 3mm 3.5mm or even 4mm if its fast and deeper and then smaller 3mm 2.5 2mm on your dropper that should pull down quicker and you feel that connection, takes a few times to get the feel for it but once you get it you get it. Nice one on landing a bonnie trout to on your first attempt. Tight Lines Marco

Cheers that's good info and it all makes sense. I've had a couple more goes with heavier flies and it's gone better but that's a good rule to know about the length of leader from the sighter to the first dropper fly. Knowing that will make a big difference. Could I tie a tippet ring in under my sighter and another at the top dropper so I could adjust the depth easily?

Nice fish rob ,like you im trying euronymphing for first time and dont think its for me like you have difficulty seeing line and indicator and no enjoyment in the casting ,think i will stick too indicator nymphing and dry and spider fishing. I do like the 10ft 3 weight rod though all the best
@abakerslife
@abakerslife 3 месяца назад
I'm going to stick with it but am definitely going to have to re think the sighter as it's just not working for me. So far the takes I have had have all been detected by keeping in tight contact to the nymphs. I like the rod too, especially when playing a fish.

Great video! Try swapping the spider for an extra nymph on the dropper. It could add a little punch to your cast and reduce wind and water resistance, helping your flies sink deeper in the process. Tight lines!

Thanks, you are right, I was underweighted. Had a couple of goes since with heavier nymphs and it went smoother.

No idea on what tips to give you regarding euro nypmhing but I know the Whiteadder around Clarabad and the upper tweed offers some fantastic sport with big graying and trout. That was a bonny fish you got

If you get the chance, Appleby AA have great water on the Eden. I am a beginner nympher too, but have had both trout and grayling over 2lb on a wet fly and Egans Frenchie euro nymphed.

I do like the Eden thanks for the pointer, I will keep that in mind. There are so many rivers and yet life is so short, what a terrible irony.

Use a small indicator to control the depth might be an idea. idk if that counts as euronymphing or its indicator nymphing or idc nymphing but it will make your life a lot easier since it also show you any strikes :)
@abakerslife
@abakerslife 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the pointers. I'm going to keep going with the direct nymphing though. I've been using heavier flies and trying to keep in contact more during the whole drift. I've set up an 11 foot #6 rod with a stronger leader to test it out on the salmon. At the moment, after a very wet spring, our rivers are very low so it won't be long before it's time to try. Not long to go before your season gets going, you must be champing at the bit?

Hello, here are a few things I noticed in the video that you can improve your technique. 1. When casting, try to stop the rod at the 1 o'clock position and not at the 3 o'clock position. If you let the rod tip almost touch the water you will lose contact and it will be more difficult to rebuild it later. 2. Don't be afraid to strike. Any move the Sighter makes can be a fish. Hope that helps

I can see myself having a go for the grayling up there. Had 7 the other night at Felton. Nothing big but it's a relaxing break from salmon obsession
