Apollo, many confederate troops had blue uniforms (the 33rd Virginia for example) at Bull Run.. and alot of Union regiments used grey uniforms, like nearly all New York and Wisconsin troops. The uniform regulation was introduced later :)

Ben Hinkel very true. Most confederate troops in the first few battles were in their original US military uniforms before the confederacy decided to create their own to avoid confusion on the field.

Makes sense. At the start of the war at West point....all southern men were expelled still wearing union attire from their union battalion. This battle happened weeks later. With mass mobilisation it would have taken months to acquire dress battalions

Brig. Gen. Barnard Elliott Bee, Jr. is believed to have been the man who shouted: "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally behind the Virginians!"
@Hinkel84
@Hinkel84 7 лет назад
"Standing like a stone wall" could also have a negative meaning. Bee was killed after his quote, but he was upset that his troops were killed, while Jacksons brigade did nothing and just stand there like a stone wall, without doing anything. So it was most likely a blame towards Jackson :)

I haven't even watched it yet but I've already given it a like because because I grew up living within 30 minutes of where this battle took place. Gonna grab some food and watch it now, see if maybe the map has some recognizable features. =P [edit] at 22:50 I believe that house there...is actually the Old Stone house at the intersection of Lee Highway (running East/West) and Sudley road (running North/South). In fact, that creek running by it, is called "Youngs Branch" which I believe comes off of BullRun creek...been years since I've been there last so can't 100% remember. Also, that hill just to the south of the Stone House is where the current day Henry Hill visitor center is located. They have a statue of Stonewall Jackson right outside it, marking the location of where the Confederates "stood like a stone wall". =P One last thing as well...its not shown on the minimap, but the City of Manassas is literally within walking distance of this battlefield. You can probably walk from Henry Hill to Interstate 66 and the city probably within 10 to 15 minutes...thats how close it is... its pretty crazy actually. I'm actually really really surprised at just how accurate this map is. O.O

Hey Apollo, you were actually really wrong when you said that this was the bloodiest war in history at the time, because other wars that happened prior to this one (like the 7 Years War aka the French and Indian War, as well as the 30 Years War and some chinese civil wars and other asian conflicts) were way more bloody, some even with millions of dead, while the US Civil War had "only" about 600k deaths.
@marshalblue2839

During this battle, there weren't really uniforms for the Confederacy. Most of the Confederate forces actually wore Union uniforms. This caused a lot of confusion with this battle of course. The Confederacy would wear a White rag on some part of their uniform to signify that they were confederate though, so that helped. I thought You'd like to know, and hope this helped you and some people.

The movie "Gods and Generals" is a really good movie. I really liked it. The movie centers on the life of Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, from the outbreak of the American Civil War until its halfway point when on a night ride with his staff to plan the next day's battle, Jackson is accidentally shot by his own soldiers in May 1863 while commanding at the Battle of Chancellorsville. This movie is the prequel to the movie Gettysburg. I highly recommend both movies to those who have not seen them yet ;)

I'm a Civil War Reenactor. There were a couple reasons behind people watching the battles. 1. If you had loved ones you'd want to see what happened so you could relate news to the family. 2. If you were pro North or South it was like two basketball teams in an exhibition. You wanted to see which army was stronger it was entertaining to watch. Until the battle came to you and you found yourself mixed up in it. That's just how they rolled.

Fun fact about the American civil war, Many European countries sent observers to spectate the battles so they could learn what tactics worked and what didnt since it was one of the first wars of its era. But many of them left early on in the war because they couldn't understand the absolutely savagery of which both sides fought, as an example it was common practice when one army fixed bayonets to charge the opposing force would give ground and reform. But in the case of the American civil war it would instead lead to a bloody and savage hand to hand fight. So these refined European observers believed no war like this would ever take place in civilized Europe so they didnt bother to keep any detailed records of what they saw. And then a few decades later WW1 began.

In the 1st battle of bull run the confederates had the same uniform as the union since it was so close to the secession. Union artillary actually got confused and failed to fire at advancing confederates at one point. The confederates changed their uniform after the battle so their forces wouldnt get confused down the road.

11:38 there was famously some confusion in uniforms especially at the beginning of the war. Blue uniforms were common before the war and many Confederate units were outfitted with them. Also, some state militias from the North that would go on to form volunteer regiments wore grey uniforms. Southerners never had an abundance of uniforms and clothing and would often take uniforms from dead Union soldiers.
@plartoota4584
@plartoota4584 7 лет назад
Also one of the reasons the union lost is the confederate uniforms were not standardized when the battle took place, and a regiment of Virginians in blue uniforms simply marched up behind a union brigade and took it prisoner without firing a shot. Uniforms played a large role in bull run.
@aaroncabatingan5238
@aaroncabatingan5238 Год назад
I think the reason why it seemed like the Union had more men is because a lot of CSA infantry was stuck fighting a couple of Union regiments that got surrounded after the Union left collapsed and when the Union right arrived, the CSA barely have any troops in position to fight them and the CSA commander was just sending men to the Union right piecemeal. Which resulted in each CSA regiment getting overwhelmed one by one as the Union advanced.

@jamesharris7586

Great battle! To answer your questions about uniforms: at the outset of the war not all confederate soldiers were decked in grey. Many used to be in blue but when the war broke out their units became confederate units. To distinguish themselves before their grey uniforms came in they would turn their buckles that read "US" upside down. Also, several union units wore grey and it wasn't until after the first few battles that blue uniforms became the standard to help distinguish Union from Confederate. One story from the early days of the war that is interesting was that there was a union unit that was decked in grey moving in a wooded area when they came upon another unit that was wearing grey. They shouted out for the other unit to declare themselves which that unit called back for them to do the same. When the union unit shouted that they were a union unit the other unit (which was actually confederate) immediately opened fire and took out the majority of the union unit causing them to immediately fall back.

During the Civil war / war between the states. Uniforms were issued by the state they signed up . Some union troops wore grey until the union standardized uniforms after a few accidents of friendly fire that caused loss on the field. Confederate never really standardized uniforms. It was a mix matches.

I'm no sure if someone already said this but since the american army's uniform was blue for all states of the union before and during the southern succession, when war time came most of the states (north and south) put on their standard blue military uniforms and marched into battle. Seeing this problem of wearing the same color, the confederates ordered their men to wear a white band around their arm and hat.

Pixie, the reason some Union soldiers look like Confederates and vice versa, is because in the battle of Bull Run, he armies weren't fully "rallied" and "trained", and they weren't well supplied, meaning many didn't have actual official uniforms at the time. Many articles state that one of the main problems in the battle was that there would be friendly fire, because no one could tell who was friend or who was foe.

The Unit at around 11:51 could have been based off of the early Confederate units as many of them had the same uniform when the lines were drawn between the states. Many of the Cadets in the military schools wore their uniform into battle and they looked just like the Northern units. It slowly faded out though.

About the 33rd VA uniforms, it adds to the realism of the 1st battle of bull run because during the battle there were lots of cases of friendly fire due to the extreme similarities in the uniforms of the Union and the Confederate soldiers. Some Union regiments had gray uniforms and some Confederate regiments had blue uniforms. But as the war went on each side changed their colors to the blue and gray we know today.

Apollo et all. The 1st battle of the war and Bull Run was fought between mainly militias and cadet troops. The uniforms at this time were Cadet Grey or Blue on both sides. One Rebel regiment had to turn their tunics inside out so to avoid friendly fire....they fought in their white silk lining. Henry House Hill was where General Bee was killed shortly after identifying Jackson as Stonewall with his cadets on the breast of the hill. The retreating Rebels joined Jackson. General Johnston had arrived with 15,000 troops by train from the Shenandoah valley who came up beside Jackson and repelled the Federals. Thence begun the great Skedaddle when Federal forces panicked and fled over the ford behind them. The right wing where the Rebels who had been holding the Federal forces began to take ground as the Federals started to flee in panic. Taking the hundreds of onlookers with them into Washington. Beauregard and Johnston could not follow them into Washington as only a few troops were fresh. Soon after President Davis of the Confederacy asked all Southern Combatants to wear Grey. ps. I am English.

Fun fact, The 33rd Virginia Infantry wore their Union garments at The 1st Battle of Bull Run. The 33rd Virginia switched to Confederate outfits after the battle.

Early in the war uniforms were not standardized. many pre war militias in the south wore blue uniforms. There was a significant number of union militia that showed up in grey uniforms also. Also, the St. Andrews cross Confederate battle flag was not used in this engagement.

Apollo at the first battle of Bull Run the Confederacy hadn't had time to make army uniforms, there was much confusion in this battle as Confederate troops were in some instances wearing union uniforms.

During the American Civil War, it was common for soldiers to wear uniforms of the enemy cause at the time, Confederates didn't have enough uniforms, so it was common for the confederates to wear captured Union uniforms

I am not sure if the 33rd VA wore blue in particular, but some confederate units did wear blue uniforms such as the Virginia militia units. The north also wore grey. One particular unit was the 7th NY Infantry who wore a grey uniform with black trim and or facing. With no true uniform army at Bull Run, it was confusing who was friend and who was foe.
