I got called out of my stand-by duty for a trip to Hong Kong.
With less than 24h notice I still managed to find a really good bike shop in SoHo district thanks to quick replies from the local Rapha riders. I went to Velo6 to get a rental bike and raced up Victoria Peak to get the most amazing view you can think of looking over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon!

Its amzing that you can find the right way up to the peak. The road structure in hk is quite complicated. Nice ride man

I am a Hong Konger. You have amazing handling skills to ride in the traffic which I dont suggest to try squeeze through the gaps of the traffic. And also mind people opening car doors and people passing the street illegally. I saw you go up the bridges with the cars twice in the video. It is not allowed to go on bridges for cars in Hong Kong. One last thing is that You are required to take off the front wheel of the bike and go to the first or last cart of MTR if you want to travel by train. Riding in Hong Kong Island with such heavy traffic and narrow road is not sugessted. We usually ride at night if riding at Hong Kong Island. Or early in the morning at New Terrortories or Kowloon. Contact me if you want to ride with me. But I am not a very strong rider...

Its all good but just to point out so that you are aware of that. Have a nice trip at Hong Kong. I do not recommend riding at bike paths at weekend as people renting a bike is mostly not very skillful and would be very dangerous.

Yeah, it's frustrating trying to find a route to get to places. At 3:25, there are two not very visible signs next to the bridge you go on. They need to do a better job, or better yet just stop restricting cycling.

I was just thinking the same thing. It takes a very brave, or skilled, soul to ride thru traffic like that. I hardly ever see people recreationally cycling in HK.

Kudos! Lived in Hong Kong and had walked through all the streets you road through in this video. You even road passed my old flat up in mid-levels. Nice video! Never imagined riding through there up to the peak due to how crazy the traffic is there.

Thanks for this video! They way you went through before heading up to the peak was the same route as my primary school bus in the 70s. You a actually passed my school at 4:22! St Joseph's Primary School. Thanks for the memory!

Jasper Verkuijl Take the mtr! You can bring your bike into the train, but you need to take the front wheel off. I know it's a little bit weird, but rules are rules :)

Take the 'ordinary' ferry from Pier 6 to Mui Wo. You can then take a nice ride up to Po Lin Monastery.
@arkinhk2019
@arkinhk2019 7 лет назад
Jasper Verkuijl hiya. Yes. Bikes are regarded as 'cargo' and therefore can only be taken on the 'ordinary' ferry (i.e. Slow) service. However, you can just wheel your bike on. It's dead easy. Please note that the ferry service timetable does vary Mon-Sat and Sunday. Sunday had different sailing times, so please consult the ferry service timetable.

Don't believe that HK is bad for riding. It's great. It just takes time to know how to ride it. 1000m in 30km is easy everyday on HK island. If you want a faster paced ride on good roads at the right times for traffic, look up SIR cycling. Cheers.

+Jasper Verkuijl thanks for sharing the video of Hong Kong. I really enjoyed it since I haven't been back there since I immigrated to the United States when I was little. Can you offer me some cycling advice? I signed up a 200K organized ride in early June with little more than 3 km of climbing. How should I train for it? I have done many 200K ride, just not with 3 km of climbing. Thanks in advance.

Sadly - HK is possibly the most cycling 'UNfriendly' places I have ever lived in or visited. The HK government and Police's attitude towards cyclists and cycling in general is nothing short of a disgrace. Indeed both HK Police and government consider cyclists as a thorough nuisance and do their utmost to openly deter the sport. Possibly worse though is the attitude of the vast majority of HK motorists who think nothing of deliberately running you into the gutter or completely off the road if you delay them by even a split second! [and don't expect any protection from HK Police if you are involved in a traffic accident - more than likely they will try to prosecute you instead!] I understand that being such a 'confined' space HK is not really conducive to cycling - but if there is willing from the powers that be to encourage what is one of the most enjoyable and healthy sports [that people of any age, sex and level can participate in] a reasonable compromise can be achieved. I would be glad to hear from other cyclists that share my thoughts and passion for this wonderful sport!
@thesoultwins72

+Jasper Verkuijl…...yes you are lucky not to experience the 'horrors' of cycling in HK. A few years ago, I went out on a lovely autumn morning and was riding along a fast open 'dual-carriageway' towards Fairview Park in Yuen Long. Visibility was excellent and traffic light Suddenly, a car appeared on my right-hand side and before passing me and without signalling, decided to turn left into a side road. I was completely taken out - my bike sent flying into the air and me in the other direction. The driver [a Chinese lady] stopped and ran over to me crying and literally begging for forgiveness. I instantly asked how her how she did not see me - I was wearing a bright pink Giro d'Italia replica jersey and to repeat, it was lovely bright sunny day with excellent visibility. She admitted that she wasn't paying attention and offered to pay me for any damage to my bike etc. I then noticed she had her mobile phone in her hand and a young baby in the back seat of her car. It is my firm belief that she was either distracted by her baby, or using her mobile phone whilst driving - which is illegal in HK. Another driver stopped and offered first aid and called the police. Myself and the driver had our details taken and after attending hospital for treatment for the numerous cuts and bruises I suffered [my bike came off far worse!] I visited the local police station to make a full statement. A few weeks later I received a summons from HK Police charging me with 'Illegal riding of a bicycle on a public highway'! I was also informed that the driver had been sumonsed with 'Careless Driving' - which is the lowest traffic offence a driver can be charged with in HK. I objected to my summons - and astonishingly, the Police dropped all charges against me. [HK Police love to prosecute anyone involved in a road traffic accident - even if they are patently not at fault!] However, I attended court as a prosecution witness against the lady driver. Despite being the ONLY prosecution witness, the prosecution lawyer categorically refused to talk to me or ask the driver a number of questions on my behalf that I felt would have immediately proven her guilt. [ie; how a bright sunny day and if she had been paying attention, did she fail to see me?]. Indeed the prosecution lawyer was the most inept and incompetent lawyer I have ever seen. [and that's saying something!] She was very badly prepared, didn't 'probe' the lady driver about the driving conditions, ask her why she failed to see me or indicate when she made the turn into the side road. As a result the lady driver was acquitted. This is remarkable. According to their own statistics, 96.5% of all prosecutions brought by HK Police for road traffic offences are successful - yet this woman got off! I am convinced her acquittal was almost certainly due to the fact that I am cyclist and a 'gweilo'. To be fair I was lucky that day - I could have been very seriously injured. However, my bike was literally destroyed and I ended up having to buy a completely new one at great cost. To repeat, HK IS by far the worst place you can ride a bike.
