Historic footage of the first multi-day bluegrass festival held in Fincastle Va. on Labor Day Weekend September 3, 4, 5, 1965. Please check out my Banjo Newsletter article about the Fincastle festival: banjonews.com/2012-03/reno-st...
Thanks for posting this. Check it out at 11:53. That's me on the right hand side shaking his head and taking some pictures that are still in my banjo case today. Great memories
Very cool posting of the first festival. The stage couldn't be much more basic unless it had no roof...or wasn't there at all I suppose. But the music is as fine as any I've heard. I keep trying to figure if the man in the vest and black hat walking through the crowd at 1:50 is John Hartford. Its definitely his style.
Does anyone know where I could find the site where this occurred in Fincastle? All I know is Cantrell's Horse Farm, but where is that specifically? Directions? I'm going back to Merlefest in September and would like to visit this site. Thank you!
Bruce Too Your welcome Bruce. There is a very good documentary about Jimmy Martin called the King of Bluegrass that might be helpful for your study. You can find it on You Tube with very little effort
