We're from the North but my Dad used to sing "In The Pines" after having a few beers. . Everytime I hear that song I can see him singing it.

Mike Emerson, I don't have to tell you how lucky you are having Bill Emerson as a father. He is an amazing banjo player!

Thanks for posting this. Check it out at 11:53. That's me on the right hand side shaking his head and taking some pictures that are still in my banjo case today. Great memories

Very cool posting of the first festival. The stage couldn't be much more basic unless it had no roof...or wasn't there at all I suppose. But the music is as fine as any I've heard. I keep trying to figure if the man in the vest and black hat walking through the crowd at 1:50 is John Hartford. Its definitely his style.

Is that John Hartford walking through the audience during the first number? Guy has a hat like John always wore.

Does anyone know where I could find the site where this occurred in Fincastle? All I know is Cantrell's Horse Farm, but where is that specifically? Directions? I'm going back to Merlefest in September and would like to visit this site. Thank you!

I thought the first bluegrass festival was in Luray, VA with Bill Monroe, Bill Clifton, Stanley Brothers, etc...

Go to 1:35 to watch a woman in a striped top kick John Hartford out of her seat.

who is singing "Poor Ellen Smith"? Which band is that? Thanks--

That is 'The King of Bluegrass' himself... Jimmy Martin and his Sunny Mountain Boys.

Thanks for the info--I'm working on a study of early bluegrass and old time music. Back then the two styles weren't necessarily separate.

Bruce Too Your welcome Bruce. There is a very good documentary about Jimmy Martin called the King of Bluegrass that might be helpful for your study. You can find it on You Tube with very little effort
