Wow, just stumbled upon this repost of my video... This was an old VHS tape I found sitting in a box in my basement since the 80's. I set my vcr to record and actually went down to the airport to photograph the arrival. I used to take photos for the local paper and i was able to meet the pilot and crew. Also had a tour of the plane and cockpit. What an amazing plane! The vcr stopped recording so I missed the news coverage of the plane departing....
COBBLERS, CONCORDE ALONE, WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR 25% OF BA's NET PROFIT. AIRFRANCE COULDN'T AFORD TO FLY THEIRS, OF PAY FOR THE NEW SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS. THEY HAD BOTH SIGNED A LEGAL CONTRACT, YEARS AGO, THAT IF ONE STOPPED USING CONCORDE, THE OTHER WOULD.
Well it was designed for a certain class of people only! ..And now!? Everybody thinking of much more faster things &...going to Mars! What happened to that Virgin Atlantic project!? 👍❤️
So the community doesn't want the Concorde to exist there because of noise, yet the entire town comes to see her land at their inadequate airport. Hypocrites much?
I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since the last one flew. I remember my first sight of G-BOAG in Oshkosh in '85 when I was 10. Fortunate enough to meet Captain Cook. It was the biggest crowd I remember in my 44 years. EAA was cancelled this year which would've been my 45th. (The only crowds that may have come close were the years when the SR-71 and F-117 showed up.) Flightline security had a hard time keeping everyone behind the line as everyone wanted a photo of the approach. (Which for a ten year old seemed to take forever, especially as they had the tower comms over the PA system and Captain Cook kept teasing "Oshkosh, I can see you, can you see me?) Then finally the landing lights were visible! The big plaza that exists at KOSH now wasn't around back then (and the runway was a lot shorter than it is now) so Concorde was parked in the Warbirds area on RW4. I remember the depressions it left in the asphalt surface when it was moved over to the paved apron by Wittman terminal for the four passenger flights to Canada and back. I also appreciate the Tu-144. The Russians did their own thing and the retractable canards were a neat trick but it just doesn't have the beauty of Concorde.
We would've more if it hadn't been for jerks like Ralph Nader interfering in ours lives way back when and busy body old people who were already 90% deaf and telling us that it's too noisy and tree huggers.....I know blah, blah, blah.🙄
OMG, I've just come across this, and now watched in 2023. This is how our Concorde was perceived in Rhode Island back in 1988. Yes, a one-off visit, but I'm overwhelmed how special she was thought of, the news coverage of it all. The only thing to put right is the she was NO seagull!
She was originally planned to land in Boston but the request was denied. Next largest airport in the area was Providence. My mother saw it takeoff about 5 miles away from the airport.
I was lucky to fly her twice (1 supersonic and 1 subsonic flight). And watching this vid, there's no doubt that Concorde had her US fan club. It was idiotic US politicians that had sour grapes. The FAA tried to ban her. Tree hugging groups kept crying because she was 'too loud'. She actually had less noise complaints than the 747 because of special departure procedures that were developed. The amount of people who went to see her that day just shows how much the majority of the US public liked her. It's not unlike her last departure from Kennedy....she practically brought the airport to a standstill. Other aircraft wanted to hold where they were so they could see her take-off. The ATC recordings are heart rendering with all the crews wanting to say farewell to her. And you can hear the emotion on their voices. There were more that loved her, than hated her. The ones that hated her had no one else to hate because she was one of a kind.
"Men of vision designed this wonderful machine, men of passion built her, and, I hope that it will be said, men of skill and daring flew her." (Capt. Adrian Thompson, Concorde Pilot, last Heathrow - New York flight).
In my school days(1969) I saw a picture of Concorde in a magazine, Reader's Digest&thrilled at the the shape of its wings bcz I never saw such (Delta wings?!) wings. So I was very enthusiastic about it&made a "model" out of trash-mostly paper materials, giving more importance to its wings! Then I put some wheels(under carriage). So, my Concorde "took off"! Yes, it took off to our schools' annual Science Fair where I displayed it. Believe me I got a 1st prize(best craftsman)for my school! Since then, I became a great lover&admirer of not only Concorde but everything that goes fast!Sure Concorde will inspire generations to come. ❤️🌹Happy Retirement Life to Concorde🌹❤️ RIP#4590
@@Rasscasse Mine is okay but what about the actual people who designed it, built it&flew it the skies & achieved success!? They must have had all the enthusiasm in the world to create such a master piece like concord!Simply great! 👍 But.. I tell u it's all enthusiasm that matters in any field! 👍❤️🏏🙏
Great Video. The Long gone Eastern Airline 727's at the terminal remind of when I flew out Providence in the late 80's..I used to fly into Providence exceptional
This was one day before I was born. Would've loved to have seen this in person before they took them out of service. All the cool stuff was before my time; steam locomotives, ocean liners, supersonic passenger jets...
Airport runways at Green are 6,081 ft and 8,700ft. Concorde Runway requirement (with maximum load): 3,600 m (11,800 ft) So it could land full of passengers with empty tanks, but it wouldn’t be able to take off full of passengers with full tanks.
"Airport Road, you know by the airport" lol. I wonder if commentators sometimes re-watch old broadcasts and groan inwardly. This is a great vid. Had no Concorde had landed here. Mind you, I was 9 when this happened so was probably more interested in Lego.
These newscasters handled this with such reverence, and I love that there were multiple layers of car-park spectators looking forward to seeing it land. Such a shame that the Concorde couldn’t have been more involved with America 😢 Oh well, politicians & lobbyists always know best 👍
@言行一致 You maybe correct about the economics but it was spectacular to see in the flesh and to fly on, which I did a couple of times. Not at all cramped by the way. Also, it’s just Concorde not ‘the’ Concorde.
We have a few Concordes in our flight museums. I saw an Air France Concorde outside Washington. There is also a British Airways Concorde on the USS Intrepid museum in New York City.
All that enthusiasm for this wonderful airliners from the masses of people in the ground, all the while the American aviation industry was colluding with its government to thwart any chance that it had of commercial success. It’s a fitting “karma” that Concordes builder went on to become Airbus which, as of early 2020 is in much better health than Boeing. What goes around , comes around.
Even though they say locals don’t want or like the plane they still turned out in their thousands …..good old Concorde I was lucky enough to do four trips on her…sadly missed!
The British still had a way to impress our American cousins! You've got to love this aircraft. A world beater. Oh why was she grounded forever...I will never understand!
Louis Malekani Yes I know, its a French one also....but its as British as it is French and more importantly, its not American. They tried and failed to get one in the air.
Not sure any protesting residents of Green, Rhode Island (🤷🏻♂️)needed to worry about a regular Concorde service to London or Paris. I’m sure it’s a lovely town, despite the traffic akin to Los Angeles! 🤭
Shame the Americans battled against having it in their skies, I'll bet it was because somebody else made it. Even in 2022 nobody else has built such a beautiful passenger plane.
Good video from back in the day, but I have to comment about the runway is not long enough to take off? eeer, I don't think so. Concorde take off distance is a lot less than conventional aircraft me thinks.
@@TheUtuber999 well, fact is, they gave up, because they couldn't afford the critera, layed down by the Airlines. ie. they wanted a ludicrously larger plane, swing wings, made of stainless steel, --FAR TO HEAVY AND THIRSTY. SO FAR TO EXPENSIVE.
My boss, who is British even referred to it as, The Concorde just today. His reaction was, "Why the hell would the Concorde land in Rhode Island?" He didn't think the runway was long enough. Learn something new everyday, right?
oh when i saw the john video on it he said something about the plane was overloaded and missing a wheel spacer or somthing like that so i guess i have been blamming the wrong people all the time ?
Any air crash causes a decline in business for the aviation industry and Concorde with its high operating costs was especially vulnerable. It took a while for AF and BA to make the necessary modifications to their Concordes but then 9/11 happened and that was the final nail in the coffin. Budget travel was where the big growth in aviation was during the 00s, something far removed from the luxurious Concorde.
Public liability insurance costs. Upgrade was too expensive. End of the road. I often think tho in 2019 the world has more wealth and seats would easily sell. Why Virgin or Elon musk didnt make a new version I dont know. :(
