This is very exciting, and I could not wait for the first full day of charging the battery with the Hyundai Shingled Solar Panels on our new West Roof. This is a 2s5p setup with 4kWp power output.
I was really surprised to see what these panels deliver in different conditions during the day. Comparing this with the Victron MPPT calculator... I'm already impressed.

Hi Andy, I remember when you made the test of the SEPLOS MASON DIY 280 kit. I bought 3 of them following your test. I just received them today (after 2 months waiting for delivery in France). I can confirm they've listened your suggestions for enhancements in your video, or at least some of them because now, everything is in a box inside the box. No more parts in plastic bags or moving inside the case: all is well oragnized! Thank you for your very well done work/videos Andy. Learning from you every day 🙂

heck yeah. you maxing your charge controller. its gonna be impressive when all 4 strings are running. I finally got my battery banks top balanced. I had 1-2 cells in each bank hitting max on my settings for JK bms. Took 1 week almost and now all charge and discharge close to each other. I understand how you feel when things are going good. cant wait to see your roofs filled and you filling up each day if its possible.

Victron's chargers are rated to full output with ambient at temperature of 40c if correctly mounted. After that they will throttle their output to keep operating safely. They will get quite hot, but it's perfectly normal. None-the-less I have placed a blower pointing across my charger's heatsinks to give them a bit of assistance. It's not blowing a gale, I have them slowed to the point where they are almost inaudible and that does the trick nicely. Summer temperatures here reach 35c and higher, none of that cool Brisbane weather.

Yes, that is correct, we can see it outputs only 3.7kW, so already throttled. A fan would not make a huge difference (tried that) and I have too much power in summer anyway.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia When you are pulling maximu amps from mppts sooner or later they reduce the power. Solution is to put there 120mm fan or buy mppt with bigger heatsink. Friend of mine has around 40kWp and recommend me to buy bigger mppt than I need just because of this.

Clipped your solar already. Clipping is good for the winter months. I bought a cheap charge controller rather than clip the power. It makes me cry when the batteries are full and the inverters turn off the panels. I might buy a water heater to dump all the extra power as I don't have a Teslander. Lol

Dear Andy, you got breathtaking 50 kWh´s on your first day of fully installation. But yesterday, without charging the EV, it was almost 20 kWh`s. That`s exactly what i observed in my solar installation in summertime: without a big "energiesink", you will not get what you could! So, without any doubt, you need more batterie capacity yet. Will be exciting, to follow your new ideas and decisions - and we all will enyjoy this! 🙂 On the other hand: in wintertime you earn just a 10th of the summertime harvest, so it would work fine with the momentary batterie capacity...

Yeah, that's exactly what happened. But more batteries won't help if you don't use the energy somehow. It helps you once until they are charged as well. Then, you will be in the same situation again. Wintertime will be the interesting season for sure.

Based on my experience with high wattage solar in sunny Jamaica , divide the 4000w string into two and use two of the 70 amp vectron 150 charge controllers and you'l be fine.

Hi Andy, that's awesome. I can't wait to see the full plant in action. However, I have a comment on the MPPT chargers and their temperature. The manual clearly states for temps: Operating temperature: -30°C to +60°C (full rated output up to 40°C) So it will throttle down when reaching 40°C. Since you live in sunny hot Australia, you might see that in the summer. I put some temp controlled fans on the things, because they reach 40°C quite quickly at the surface.

Love that you are making progress and sharing it with us. I have to admit, I'm a little concerned. We always talk about the gernal rule of using an electronic device at 80% of it's rated performance. Safety and security are the stated reasons. Don't take chances. You will be running these SCCs at 100% for hours/days? Please get the larger controllers and be safe and ready for the NEW shed coming next year. 👍☀️😎💥

Hi Andy, since you are maxing out your MPPT with 70A charge now, are you not worried about your 63A DC breaker connecting the charger to the batteries?

Andy If I may, now you have a lot of old panels. Could you do it the test with one long string vs. paralel string? Maybe 6 panels in series vs. 3x2, just to compare the power production in your shading condition.

you need a different MPPT controller to add 6 panels in series, as the open circuit voltage would exceed 250V, and these victron MPPTs can only take 150V max, and give out 70A to the battery, hence their name! More panels in series is always worse for partial shade conditions.

Hi Andi, almost 240 amps/ 13.8 kW you got on Monday at 1:15 pm already with completed installation. An upgrade of your batterie is planned? Now, at 6 am, your batterie SOC is almost 80%, where you want to let all the watts? If you want to test, ifva bigger controller will make a lotbof difference then you can put two controllers in parallel. And you have some extra for teeting, Right?

Wow Andy, this is going to be so awesome when it is finished. So people have asked if u will ever get ur batteries full, I am guessing you will be able to fill up to 2 of ur 44kw batteries fully (on good days), & 20%-50% on not so good days and poor weather, does that sound near the mark? Here is another prediction; I can see at least another 44kw of Lifepo4 cells on ur floor in the not too distant future. Cheers

On what setting did you set your big circuit breakers on the battery again? Did you calculate the maximum charge current, which you would get if all roof systems are up and running? I think you need to reevaluate the trip setting on those breakers, because not only consuming current can trip them, but charging current as well... Oh, what I totally did forget: Didn't you install 63A breakers for each charge controller? Their temperature trip could rob you of the fun eventually, above 80-85A at the latest...

Current is current, does not matter if it is charging or discharging. I have set them to 80A for each bank and 250A for the main breaker. Yeah, the MPPT breakers are 63A only. I really did not expect so much output of these panels.

Dang Andy thanks for the outstanding test report, that is amazing! At 7:00 could you add a second a second charge controller in parallel to keep the 70 amp controller from throttling to parallel charge the same battery bank (with an isolator if needed), or to charge a second battery bank? Also, can you give us an idea of the installed cost of that 10 panel string? I think that would be perfect for my needs.

Get the 150! Victron will probably give you a good offer...bigger models will also probably handle heat etc. better than maxed out small models (which you really shouldn't do)

It`s a quite good idea, to break down a complex system to smaller, identical, units in a higher count! This redundancy makes ist easy to compare und change in a case of failure or in a case of testing and comparison parts ans components. I go with Andy in exact this way!

Have you gotten the new SEPLOS firmware for your Madson battery kit BMS ? Meine Energiewende has released a video yesterday about the firmware .29 solving at least some issues you had faced like shutting off balancing once charging stopped. Hope you will examine it too if the balancing is working now and we can avoid adding an active balancer at least for smaller batteries. The elejoy checker for 800W panel is also a lot better. Got mine in August and was able to check the modules for max output.

I just left a longer comment on his page. The new FW 2.9 does not change the behaviour of the balancer unfortunately. His test was a bit... When he stopped charging the balancer seemed to 'work well' but in reality, the overall pack voltage decreased which pushed all cells back in the flat area of the curve, hence the voltage delta decreased as well. It looked like the balancer is working when the cause of that was the decrease of the overall voltage. The 2.9FW has no visible changes to function of the BMS as far as I can tell. The balancer still sucks! Yeah, I really like the display of the Elejoy Panel tester. it's a great update from the previous model and well worth the money.

I don't know if those trees are protected and I am full against deforestation but those trees could use a little trimming, don't cut them just make them a bit shorter and maybe get a little off the sides too, not only to reduce shading on the solar panels but to reduce the danger those trees could cause during windy days and storms

I topped 2 trees so I would have no shading from them. I live in Michigan USA west side and we have so many trees around. I am gonna plant 2 new trees in there place even though they are just topped. thinking fruit trees.

I used Victron's MPPT calculator setting up my system. 2.4k panels 6s4p, .. 150-70.. under 100% .. well within limits. ... I went with the 150-85...... according to them for my local, peak, in summer, I was producing 10-15% more than they calc'ed, and, my panels are FLAT on the roof of my TT. I will soon be adding 1.8k more panels, same 6s4p, I will be using another 150-85, .. Why you may ask?... Redundancy/backup .. Yes, overkill for the new panels, but, should need arise, can be swapped to the main array.... 2 is 1, 1 is NONE......

That is the experiment I'm doing. Instead of spending $10k on cutting down these trees I invested this money in solar panels and can leave the trees as they are.

@@mw0lge All these connections are under panels and not 'exposed' as such. They will come back to finish off some other tasks and fully commission the system (labelling, cabling, ...)

When you add up all the hardware to operate Victron it becomes a very expensive solution. I,m used the MPP 11kw inverter with built in 2x 150amp MPPT converters making the setup and wiring very simple.

Andy, I would like your opinion on lithium build I'm going to put together. Its for high power car audio (90A average 600A peak) I'm going to use 48 Headway 38120 HP 3.2V 8AH LIFEPO4 cells(12C discharge / 4C charge) and 500F in capacitors (to handle peaks and car starting) It's replacing 2 x 100AH AGM's and I'm repurposing the 500F in caps. In your opinion is a better idea to set up 2 x 4S6P and 2 x 200A BMS's (B1A8S20PH) in parallel or a 4S12P and 400A BMS? I'm leaning to the 2 x 4S6P and 2 BMS's myself, to limit the amount of parallel cells. Do you still feel the same as you did in your Jun 10, 2021video "Parallel Battery Strings - worst solution ever?" ? thank you in advance.

What is the max. current you are expecting at full sun and without being limited by the charge controller? Maybe even more than 85A?

Around 50A from the solar panels which is then 80A into the battery. Just a guess though what I would expect from these panels. It's not worth going for a bigger controller but would be cool to test it and see the real numbers. Once the other roofs are connected, I will have too much power anyway, so a bit of clipping is OK.

You can have as many controllers in parallel as you like as long as they all have their own panels. They only see the battery and don't interfere with the other controllers at all.

How have you connected up those panels with that shading in them? Surely one shaded panel will bring down the rest? I assume this isn't a simple single string in series? Edit: you literally answered the question as I finished. 2S5P So those couple panels in shade are not affecting the others. Got it. 👍😀 That's what's good about these Victron controllers. You can shove quite a lot of power through them. Hybrid inverters are very limited to input current. Big voltage range, but no chance to parallel up any panels.

Phil, this is not one string, no. It's a 2s5p setup. 2 panels in series and 5 strings in parallel. It's all in previous videos. I chose this setup because of the partly shading I have on all my roofs.

I have 4 of these controllers, yes, that is possible but not from the same solar panels. Each controller will have to get its own panels.

AFAIK Andy does backfeed... but with a completely different setup on his house (he's locked into a contract so can't change anything there). This setup is "off grid". Having said that, this system takes a lot of overhead out of his house setup and so this system 'vicariously' backfeeds into the grid if you get what I'm saying. I think he's running a pool pump, lighting and charging his Tesla with the power.

WOW!!!!! Amazing results for not perfect conditions. I.E. shading and not optimal angling. Very impressive for just 10 panels. You will definitely have issues with your charge controllers being constantly maxed, witch truly isn't good for them, as well as your 3 bms units might want to blow up from the mass current that your small power plant can produce. 🤣

The MPPTs can handle that no problem. As I said in the video, they are designed for 130% over-panneling.

There will not be a problem. Currents will split over all batterystacks, so the bms should not get an issue. If there is really a problem its also possible to limit the charge current of the solar chargers. I am running a 14kW Peak installation in north of germany. 2x15 panels (5 in series, 3 in parallel) south, each on a Victron 250/100 MPPT - in summer each of those can deliver 5,5kW (5kW official rating). And one 6 panel string heading east also on a 250/100 MPPT (can add some more modules there). Now in November its still possible to run full on solar, but this november is surprisingly sunny.

You probably don't really want them mate. They can be quite a pest. Colonies of thousands. Shit everywhere. Huge splattery shits everywhere that makes good paint stripper. Everything eaten, esp fruit trees. And they can harbour nasty viruses. A few are OK, but the big colonies drive us nuts. Especially the farmers.

This is something I've tried to convince people about but no one really seems to grasp the issue. It doesn't have to be a battery tripping off either. As the batteries come up to full charge their inherent slight capacity differences will see more of the available current going towards the lower SOC batteries. Eventually this imbalance may result in a higher than desirable charge rate to one or more batteries or even get to the point where the BMS has to step in and terminate charging (this protection is not a desirable thing to run into, think of it as being in a car crash bad enough to fire the airbags). Being able to adjust the overall charging current or limit current to each battery using a switching BMS really does matter. It's not something peculiar to lifepo4, it is an issue with all battery types. Andy's raspberry pi running Venus is capable of coordinating the total output of all his chargers but I'm not familiar enough with it to say if it can make use of the amps reading from Victron batteries to limit the max current any one battery sees. It would be possible to have a shim / driver to make the amp readings of his BMS' appear in Venus if he hasn't already done that.

You optimise one part of a large system, while adding complexity and cost to another part, for a nett negative. Passive solar panel setups are significantly more cost-effective than any form of active system - otherwise most space-sensitive installations would be going for active systems (water cooling, forced air cooling). The extra 1-10% panel efficiency is not worth the cost or hassle to maintain.

You're gonna start doing flips once the whole system is installed and you see the peak generation. Its nice to see it do so well in the morning... that's the claim-to-fame for those panels, after all. Full sun probably is more around 3.5kW at 5:20-ish in the video. You are getting extra from the brightness of the clouds nearby. There will be times when that happens... when the sun peaks out from behind the clouds and you get full sun + bright clouds at the same time. The system will cap-out for a minute or two. At this point you really need to start looking into high-voltage string inverters instead of using these little low-voltage controllers. I can't say how they would compare, though... having more, smaller inverters is always better in variable-shading conditions, but high voltage strings have far lower wiring losses and are just easier to manage. edit: Well, in your case, charge controllers, not inverters.

I've got the other smaller system running now (3kWp with 8 Hyunday panels, 400W/ea) and it produces a permanent 3.8kW under normal sunny conditions. Over 4kW with these cloud corner situations. They are producing far more than they are rated for. Longer stings are not good for these conditions and far less effective. I think this is the most optimal solution so far, even it was a hell of a job to cable all that.

Shading is really affecting your strings. I would suggest you first trim those trees and wire your panels in parallel in order to reduce the string impact. Otherwise divide the shaded strings into different victron mppts. Those Shaded mppts will help the unshaded mppts to work better. If you are able to solve your shading, buy the 450v victron mppts. they have multiple pv trackers and will still work with your victron ecosystem.

I agree that would help but in past videos, Andy has stated that he does not want to trim the trees. Instead, he is going with many panels knowing he will get shade. He could certainly get more out of the system with additional controllers. It is a trade-off of the cost & difficulty of adding controllers vs the benefit he gets. (His general approach to date is to add lots of panels).

the low voltage input and limited output current on affordable victron made me throw victron away and went with 5kw phocos hybrid inverter. @450v input voltage. the solar panels cable sizing becomes easy and 4mm works. For battery cables 1.5 meters 50mm cable works and cheap enough.

Moin, die Installation ist ja schon abgeschlossen. Zwischen 12:15 und 12:30 werden die MPPT-Regler richtig rangenkommen, da kommen zwischen 13 und 15 kW vom Dach😁. Andy kann den Strom gar nicht schnell genug verbrauchen, gegen 13:00 ist sein Speicher regelmäßig schon voll🥴

You did mention that you are not keen on cutting trees long time ago. With the testing you have done there seems to be a huge difference when the panels get shaded. Can you not trim the trees not cut them down totally. Surely over a course of a year that would easily make up to cost to trim them?
