I've had lots of requests from people asking me to film a first date make-up tutorial as getting your look right for such an occasion can be tricky. I think that one of the most important things to remember is that your personality should shine through no matter what, so if you usually wear a smoky eye then don't feel like you need to do something different and replace this with a statement lip - if you don't feel comfortable your date will be able to tell!
First date make-up should also reflect the date itself - think about what you are going to be doing, are you going for a walk in the park, a romantic dinner, or a party or club? When you take all of this into account there's no one look for all first dates but one thing I've learnt from experience is that the majority of guys don't like women to look like they're wearing tons of make-up - that means heavy bases and garishly bright lips are out (unless that's your signature look of course!!).
The look I decided to do for this film follows this - I've tried to give lots of generic tips of how you can make yourself look and feel your best, with flawless, glowing skin, full lashes (I've used false ones in the film as my lashes aren't naturally full but if you're not used to wearing or applying them then it might be best not to - again, a first date isn't a time to feel uncomfortable) and natural, dewy lips.
In the film I talk about my Grandmother's make-up related first date disaster story - I'd love to hear any that you might have!

It's reassuring that the "natural look" you described at that photoshoot actually took a lot makeup, cause it feels much more reassuring having a real makeup artist tell you that the natural look is actually almost completely unnatural.

Men are so funny! All the men in my life say they like women who "wear no makeup"- what they mean is, "wear nothing that is heavy, cakey, or an unnaturally strong colour." I can wear foundation, powder, blush, shadow, eyeline, mascara, lipstick and gloss and my husband will say how much he loves that I wear barely any makeup!

I know I am late to the party, but this video reminds me of one time I wore a light BB with a very little concealer & light mascara, but also a really bright red lip, and a guy friend told me he just doesn’t think I look good with such heavy makeup. The next time I saw him, I had full coverage foundation with “natural” warm-based eyeshadow and the rest of the whole shebang on, so the higherlight blusher contour, but this time with a really natural lip color and he said “See! You look so much better without makeup on”. Of course I had to facepalm my way out.

i think it's so funny when men are like i hate makeup NO MAKEUP they want you to look like eva mendes or miranda kerr and they don't realize that they do wear lots of makeup it's just the way they've done it that makes them look "natural"

Yes, it is funny; but I've also had men tell me they like that I don't wear makeup, and I truly don't, not at all, and no, no perfect skin either. That might tell 2 things: they either really liked me to be that blind haha.. or they prefer literally NO makeup, to a face full of color or.. the types that approach a not at all made up girl in the first place are perhaps a bit 'odd' themselves or are there more men out there who literally don't give a shit despite all the messages we are bombarded with about what men like or don't like? The only thing that might be playing to my advantage for now is that I'm still quite young and apparently no makeup makes you look younger even? I bet it depends on skill, which I'm here to learn, and of course like ALL experts in any field she makes it look so easy and effortless, but once I start trying... Practice, right?

well i think most men cant actually tell when women are wearing make up or not they can just tell when they think a woman looks nice or she doesn't whether she is wearing makeup or not. there have been studies where men are shown pictures of women wearing no makeup, some natural makeup, and a full obvious face of makeup and they still choose the natural looking makeup not because they even know that there is makeup on the girl's face but because she looks healthier and brighter. her features are enhanced and sharpened. it all depends on the guy of course. my husband thinks i am beautiful either way but when i wear nice natural makeup he will tell me i look really pretty regardless of the fact that he can't point out what i did to make my face look different. men aren't as detail oriented as women

Just revisiting this video with my husband, who I met wearing this look back in 2013. We watched it together, me talking about how I referenced it, and he kindly listening. I still reference this wonderful video to this day - this and the Ultimate one are just staples to me now. Lovely video with natural looking make up! Can't believe I'm watching it 8 years later but as in I'm a member from 2007 I do love looking back at earlier videos. Love the story of your grandmother but must prove your grandad really loved her with or without boils. I think most men don't like make up or someone who will spend hours doing make up (thinking beyond first date here..) A good alternative idea might be to just have good skincare hydrated skin, moisturiser etc and tiny touch of eyeliner or lip balm. Great video Lisa! P.S. I have Chanel Aqua vitaluminare as I like quite like light weight foundations. I don't wear foundation at all on daily basis so if I do on occasions it has to be natural looking.

hello Lisa! thank you for this tutorial -- your commentary is so soothing and smoothly incorporated in your videos and I've enjoyed watching a ton of them! I'm actually a bit envious of your ability to wear (and expertly apply) blushes so lighthandedly but because I'm prone to always have flushed cheeks, it always shows through my foundation. I watched your rosacea video and what I've learned was: to apply more foundation so the natural red is entirely concealed, and then apply blush? I actually quite enjoy the flush that comes through my foundation because it's not overpowering, but I wish I could enjoy pinks or corals! What do you think? Thanks for reading!

I love this look. It is very soft and natural yet has just the right amount of edge to it. It reminds me of something a French woman would wear. Effortless chic. I bought all these products yesterday (from amazon.com... the Revlon eye shadow quad is no longer in stores but you can find it online here and there). I need to stop watching Lisa for a few days because I love every look she does and end up buying whatever she demos. I'm out of money :)

@IndigoDelirium Thanks! You could try using either a lighter lip colour or you could prep your lips with the tiniest bit of concealer first to take the natural lip down a little. Use your ring finger to pat and rub a very small amount of concealer on, it will make paler lipstick colours reproduce more like as they look in the bullet on your lips x

Lisa - I absolutely love how flawless and effortless so many of your videos are... I love how you focus on fresh and healthy "natural" looking skin. I personally have rosacia and some broken capilaries in my cheeks, and I constantly struggle to find a foundation or concealer routine that will cover the redness properly without looking like a mask... Your videos are really helpful. It would be so good if there are more videos about makeup for Asian. I have single eyelids, and that really bothers me because whenever i do eyeliners, they always fold in. I personally don't like my eyelids, so now I'm using double-eyelid tape everyday. I'm not confident about my eyes and really hope you could do some videos to help people like me to look pretty as well.

+Rhea Jayaram uh, yes she did, in her lipstick or foundation guide videos for example if you looked close enough. Besides, it's impossible to cover every information in a less than 10 minutes video. Most of the time she does the makeup on herself or she talks about her own favorite stuff, and she has light skin tone, which she wouldn't in the first instant think about darker one's option.

Elinor G I appreciate Lisa's experience and explanations in her videos. I've learned more about makeup application from her than probably anyone else. But for my personal taste, Lisa's makeup style can be a little too refined and too "pretty". I love Sam's grungier, edgier looks, as that's the makeup I would actually wear. I love them both, no need to compare the two!

I've learned a lot about natural fresh make up by watching your videos! I thought I knew a lot but through watching them I realised that you don't have to use a full face of foundation, you can use it sparingly and still get beautiful results! Thank you for sharing these with us! :)

@emilyemilyemily15 This look should look beautiful on blue eyes. If you want to make your eyes appear even bluer, try wearing some warm golden browns and bronze shades too. Thanks for your lovely comment x
