A quick comment - it's illegal to ask for SIN from telecom companies (eg for simcard) and also for rent. Even if they do ask. Read more on where you should and shouldn't disclose SIN number.

Hi Anna .. could you suggest what support we can get from province to get a rental accommodation for new commers as all the property agent need current employer letter. We left the job inorder to move to Canada and currently undergoing interviews.. Regarding the SIN the service canada strictly suggest not to give the SiN number to anybody except the Bank and Employer. Recently some fraudulent happened to me after moving Nova Scotia.. i have account with CIBC from 2018 when was in work permit ..somebody did e-transfer of total 2900 from my account and the person was using my husbands email id. My husband recently opened his account in TD. I did a transfer of 1500 to his account.. in a day or 2 somebody hacked and repeated the same transaction but the underlying account number was not of my husband but the email id was used of my husband..be careful
