Tip from a fluent visitor to germany who is also decently good at the language: Never ask a german how their day is unless you want to have a good conversation and have time to listen as Germans can be very social

North America includes 23 countries. So...people in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, etc. can be 'American'. Those of us in the United States, although not proper (but typically accepted), have taken over the term as our own because United States..ian(?) doesn't flow like Canadian or Mexican. When I was in Germany, I found it interesting that they all referred to me as being from the States vs. America. It made sense though. I figured they understood that (North) America is a continent made up of many countries.
chloe In Germany u can literally walk out from school and nobody stops u, but when u back in school [the other day or after the weekend] u fxxxed up 😂😂😂 [here in Germany we have two different types of school: in my school really nobody cared if u are at school or u are leaving, if you not coming the police will bring u to school a few times and then u have many problems, that’s why the teacher at my school don’t cared about it but then we have strict schools too but no police around schools, that would scared the kids here out 😂😂😂] my English is very bad so I’m apologise if u don’t understand a world or it don’t make sense what I was talking about 😂😂😂😂
In my school there’s off campus lucnxh and in your off blocks you can just leave. And you can walk around in the halls freely without a pass. The only time I got caught was when I tried to skip a rally
I THIS IS SO WEIRD BUT TRUE, a girl from my writing class was talking about a series with my teacher and I started talking with them and more and more people joined and that was really amazing tbh
You don't have to be embarrassed by the fact that your german isn't perfect. We had lot exchange students in our school and nobody minded it when they were talking english/ incorrect German. Just talk, we aren't that scary! (:
I wish my school was full with people like you, is a nightmare for me to go to school. I am from romania and now I live in Germany and a lot of people in my school are racist and so mean with the people from other contries :(
Wait i'm so confused. in The Netherlands, well at least at my school, one of your new classmates wil be assigned to help you find your way around in the first week. He/she will walk with you to the different classrooms, lunch area, bathrooms etc. It's just weird that you were kinda left on your own...

Same as the uk every time I moved school I was always given a person to help me they put you in there classes etc. Was so helpful idk what I would have done without that haha.

Kathy V. I like they saying if you ask them “how is your day?” They will literally go into detail about their day. Where as in America “how is your day?” Is just like a greeting or small talk.

I was born in america but went to german school for 6 years, came back to the us in 4th grade and that bs was just fkn dumb, although a few years later it was funny when my friend at a book fair said “hey look it’s ur grandpa” and pointed at a book cover with hitler on it 😑😂

But it‘s not a bad thing. So I live in Germany and our tests are like 1-2 hour s long, so it wouldn’t make any sense if she‘d sit there haha. So it‘s nothing to be anxious about haha
@@user-oy9vx5ij9k didn't say it was a bad thing haha just as someone who gets anxious when I go someplace I'm unfamiliar with even in my own country, it would be anxiety-inducing (again, for myself) not knowing where I was going in another country where I didn't speak the language.
Youngster im Germany are pretty good at English, nonetheless I don’t like when people just assume to get by just using English. She‘ll learn German quickly :)

@CitizenErased warscheinlich ändert sich das von Schule zu Schule und Stadt zu Stadt aber das waren auch meine Erfahrungen (eher im Internet als in der Schule weil ich nicht in Deutschland zur Schule gehe aber anyways haha)

It happened to me 😰 I was 11 when my family moved to italy. Every day in class sitting there and having NO IDEA what teachers said was so tiresome. I remember one time needing to pee but I didn't know how to say it, so I just sat there 😭
Camryn I would. It’s a great way to experience things and you don’t feel pressured to have good grades because you already graduated. Also a really nice way to learn a new language.

Nope. I am living in Germany since 4 years and I can aaaassuuuuure you it aint true. By now there were only 5 or 6 people (including my 3 of my teachers) I've met who could ACTUALLY speak English.

Cari Blu dont worry at all, youll always find people who are racist, doesnt matter what country youre going to or coming from. generally, theres nothing wrong with greece and greek people, so there is absolutely nothing to worry about

I can’t believe that they just kind of left you on your own. The school could’ve asked students from your grade with good English skills to show you around and explain the classes to you. I would’ve been so scared because German schools are scary as hell anyways.
I’m also German so I felt the same way when I came to Canada but I was like 8 yrs old and I said that I have cancer wich I obviously don’t have and I thought it meant something totally different and for the whole half year everyone thought I had cancer until I found out what it actually meant...
Meilosis 。 in Germany our exams go over an hour (mostly like 2-3 hours) so it wouldn’t have made sense for her to just sit there and watch them taking a test. But I can see how that is confusing, especially on your first day:)
@@nellschlarb1657 that's not completly true, only tests in german last that long (since you have to write an essay), the rest is usually 45-60 minutes, and mini surprise tests between 15 and 30 minutes. Final exams are longer though
Butter kuchenyummyumm That is only true up until about 8th grade. After that, your exams start getting longer. From 11th grade on your exams will be at least three periods.
So as an American living in Germany as well, I've learned that the younger generation usually can speak English well enough. The older generation not so much. And don't be afraid to ask them to explain the lesson in English. You got this!
I lived in Germany for 2 years didn’t know their language at all but I eventually started to pick up things and eventually could piece words from their conversations and actually understand what they’re saying. Germany was a fun experience. You’ll have a good time.
you should come to Romania ,yeah we're poor but big cities are not :/ :) so you could be an exchange student there easily since most schools in our capital are full of kids who speak english fluently so yeah :))
