I wish teachers talked about mental health and stuff when i was in elementary school i love that you incorporate it so much. Also i love the diversity you included in your classroom from your classroom set up vlogs!
I'm the old retired math teacher following your journey. Everything you are feeling is normal, including exhaustion. I suggest you start a daily journal with the good and the bad, write down what worked, what didn't, and what you want to try. You can never have enough storage, I didn't have to deal with kids storage(they went from class to class) but there is always more stuff to find places for. If you want to ask anything, feel free. I worked with many student teachers and it was a great joy for me to watch them grow into their own classrooms.
Some people think teaching is easy, it really isn’t. Firstly, you have to handle at least 20 children in a closed environment, secondly, you have to plan out everything and be really organized with everything, and lastly, there is high stress levels that come with some types of children, or not being financially stable from not being paid enough. Kudos to all the teachers out there. ❤️🥰
Re: flood of supplies: I always went to a grocery store and asked to buy big paper bags at checkout (one per kid). But of course, I would mention I was a teacher and I always got them free ;-) I wrote the students' names on the bags and the kids dropped their stuff in the bag and I lined them up against a wall. It was a good way to get them organized (temporarily) while keeping the supplies separate.
I'm not a teacher but some good advice for everyone is BREATHE. Deep breath in deep breath out. So easy, so important, so easy to forget. Congratulations on your 1st day ! Teachers are the best 💜
As a junior in high school, I’ve been looking at first day school vlogs by other students because my first day is on the 17th which is coming soon but when I saw your post posted by a teacher, I watched ur first video and loved it good job, will be subscribing and watching more. Enjoy your school year as a teacher!
You got this. My principal’s saying is Get them in, get them feed and get them home. So it was funny hearing you say it as well. Get well soon. I had virtual open house and met 20/27 students
This gave me ptsd of when teachers would move me because I talked w my friends too much 🤣😭 I was that kid that would talk to anyone so I’m sure they suffered.
A fun end of day game we played was where the teacher was in the middle of the room and they’d say “go to this side of the room if you like (example: chocolate ice cream )” while pointing to the left/right side of the room then the opposite for the other side. We could go on like this for infinity here’s some good “if you like…” prompts: Hamburger/hotdog Chocolate chip cookie/sugar cookie Fruit/veggies Orange juice /apple juice Playing inside/outside Toy figurines/video games Cake/cupcakes Cookie/brownie Swimming pool/bike Ketchup/mustard Traveling/staying home I hope you do this, it’s. A great way to get to know your kiddos and for them to know each other. It could also help more shy/more left out kids feel like a part of the class
as a person who had a first year teacher in fourth grade i have to say it was my favorite year. i feel as though first year teachers (no offense) kinda have no clue what they are doing so they just kinda go with the flow which makes the kids like it more if that makes any sense. i don’t know not sticking to a super strict schedule and having some fun time in fourth grade was so amazing and made that year sooo fun. i’m a freshman though so everything im saying might be irrelevant but oh well 🤣
Congrats on your first day of teaching! Last year was my first year, and I was fresh out of college just like you so I totally understand. I love that you set an intention of "the goal of today is to get kids here, feed them, and get them home." My intention for my first year of teaching was solely focusing on building relationships with students. It really helped me day by day with all the craziness and stress of school. Didn't get to everything I needed to? Oh well, at least I took my time on the lesson to make sure students understood. Didn't plan enough and have extra time at the end of class? I'll think of a game or even just sit and talk with my students. Set an intention for the school year like that and don't overwhelm yourself with all of the little things. Anyways, good luck on your first year. You will do great!!
Also for your supplies u can put some little bins in the middle of there table and then they can put there supplies in for each group idk if that will work for u! Just a suggestion
Future educator here! Watching your videos lessens my anxiety for teaching in the future in a way- if that makes sense lol. I hope the rest of the school year goes well for you and that you feel better! 🥰
I’m going into my 14th year of teaching and I still get nervous on the first day of school and so tired at the end of the day. You are doing great! Your activities are all great and I also over plan because you just never know!
Congratulations 🎉 on your first day, you only get it once! And how lucky that you started on a Friday. You probably lowered your resistance being stressed about starting school, take care of yourself this weekend. And congratulations on making an anchor chart WITH your students, which is much more effective than doing it ahead of time. The kids are much more invested in it and remember what was discussed. Supplies are always a challenge to store, sounds like you have a good plan. Take care of yourself and have a wonderful year!
Hi Emily!! If you are able to get back that Shelf thing with all the little sections, you could use those as supplies cubbys for their supplies boxes, any notebooks, even boxes of gluesticks and stuff, etc. Have fun teaching this year!!
Hooray on successfully surviving your first day and may I add with little to no sleep prior to! We started our school year August 2nd and even though this is my 21st year - I had all the feels that you shared! Cheers for an amazing, fun, and safe year! I’ve subscribed and clicked notifications for ALL! Thanks for sharing your journey! Makes me think that my sis (who also teaches) should upload videos about our setup and everyday life! So intriguing!
Congrats on completing your first day!! I remember my first day back in 2009… I went home and cried myself to sleep! 😂 It’s SO stressful! Side note: I would LOVE to know where you got your cute earrings from. Hope you get better this weekend and have a great first week!
I don't know if this could help but for the school supplies you could buy chair pocket organizers, but then again it would be another cost, totally up to you.
I really enjoyed watching this. I think you did great!! I can totally understand the stress about the first day but I think your kids are very happy and lucky to have such a gentle and down to earth teacher! My dream is to be a teacher as well so I'm going to university this fall to get my education to become a teacher. I'm so excited!
HAppy first day of school! MY name is Emily too! I am going into my 4th year of teaching. A heads up - don't use essential oils or a diffuser in your classroom. I have been sent to the emergency room 3 times because of allergic reaction from a colleagues diffuser. In addition, when I was a student a classmate's family sued a teacher for causing anaphylactic shock due to the teacher's diffuser. I know you want the classroom to be warm and inviting but it is just not worth it safety wise! Even if you got written permission from all student's parents, you never know about the kids down the hall.Scents travel fast. Please think about it.
It feels different seeing this as a kid and starting 5th grade on the 23rd of August I am so excited but a bit nervous at the same time but I know it will all work out at the end.
Remember to be true to who you are and to be yourself. Try not to let your peers pressure you into being someone you aren't. Do what makes you happy and everything will be okay.
I was homeschooled for 4th grade and my teacher legit was so weird about everything she said it was her 10th year teaching but yet she seemed so..... new to it.
I never sleep the night before the first day either 😂 Regarding not feeling well, my team swears by a combo of Elderberry and Vitamin C. I typically pick one of the two to take in addition to my multivitamin. I hope you feel better soon!
when i was in elementary school we had hooks in the back where we hung our backpacks and we were allowed to keep supplies in there and we also had either a bin or a shelf on our desk where we could keep the supplies we needed on a dailey basis but for 4th i had a locker
A game that I remember from elementary school was called word wonder basically everyone gets in a circle and you pick a word and a student to start let’s say the word chosen is green for example you go around the circle spelling the word so the person chosen starts they say g the person to there right says r and you go around spelling it if you say the wrong letter you sit down and you just go around spelling words until there’s 1 person left
Ok so this is like super random but your skin is so nice- like watching you put on your makeup, I’m just admiring how smooth your skin looks- is that weird to say? Idk-
I love how you are using first day jitters and the emoji sheet! I found a free version on tpt and will be using that for my first day! Congrats on your first day :) I start soon! Ah
I'm new to your channel was in recommended videos to watch and I love the classroom set up. I give props to all yall teachers for handling all the kids in classrooms. But you said something about needing to make a seating chart. I had an idea to throw out and hope you use it and maybe can show on vlog one day. But make a floor plan of desks with random numbers for the amount of students and have the students pick a number when that number is said write their name down on that number and thats there spot it was a cool way my teacher in elementary school did this quite often and the kids love it because we never knew where we were going til the teacher told us. If they get the same number there already at just say pick another number just so other kids dont know thats the number or you can change that number. Hope this is explained well. Hope to see it in one of the vlogs.
Not sure if anyone has said this about supplies, but you can get each table a 3 drawer plastic cart and can store their stuff in there and then each class would have a drawer?? I’m not sure if they’d be big enough but just an idea!
Hey girl! Where did you find your resources? I love the first day jitter book and the activities that you showed you did with your students are amazing. Can you share where you got the worksheets from?
You're so lucky to have a Friday start date. We always start on a Monday, which is STUPID because the kids and teachers are ZOMBIES starting Tuesday, ugh!
We start on a Monday this year, too, so I can completely relate to the zombie feeling 🙄 We used to start on Wednesdays, but we have a new superintendent this year
I’m going into 8th grade and I’ve been watching videos for tips I’m kind of nervous and I start next Wednesday the 18 of August congratulations on completing your first day of teaching
Omg! I wish i shout have commented before you know the paper thing that had a bunch of cubie's i think the stuff could have fit in there and you buy hooks for some of their backpacks!
I’m watching this literally a year later and now your in middle school I only just started watching has your RU-vid name always be Emily in the middle or did you change it cause your now teaching middle school?
As soon as i get in the house i wanna sleep.day at school makes me super tired but tomorrow i wanna go back and start again.kkk Wish you all the best hunnay
Bro it is so weird that we are almost done with school like it’s almost January and we end school in June we’ll I do so 6 more months then summer break- that was so quick
My teacher put short films and ate ships all day long and once we got back from special we just say her sitting in a students desk with her blanket and slippers eating her skinny pop corn
I’m so glad you had a good day. I hope you start feeling better. Hopefully I will be getting my alternative teaching license by next school year. I am subbing this year and I’m so nervous but excited. It has to get easier. Congrats! So happy for you!
I’m 19 almost and this can help so I would know how to design my English classroom or a elementary teacher I want to either be a English teacher or be a elementary teacher maybe 4th grade like her
@@emilyinthemiddle3119 Okay, so the milk crates would work for that. Where do the students keep their other supplies? Sorry if you've answered this in a previous vlog.
you’re good! i haven’t. i have a shelving unit and there is a drawer for each table where their supplies will be. i also may do a caddy on each table for little things
@@emilyinthemiddle3119 Good ideas! I've seen teachers utilize book bins for supplies and work books the students keep at their tables. I've also seen teachers utilize milk crates and each student have one at their tables. They do get very messy though, and supplies seem to get lost in milk crates. I like the idea of a student work station which could hold supplies they may need throughout the year. Good luck this school year! You've got this!
