Come along and join us on our first day with our new horse Pip,
She is adorable, just wanting a fuss all the time
she is a coming 3year old mini traditional cob which we have bought for Lewis to do some in hand showing with so she can see the world before we turn her into and all round best friend for my 2 young grandchildren
Don't forget to subscribe to @KarenBadrick1 to follow along with our journey
Here I share my journey from a complete novice horse rider to now competing at horse of the year (HOYS) shows whilst being a completely self-taught equestrian.
I have failed so many times over the years but always learnt something from it, I hope that my RU-vid channel will be able to help teach you all the little bits that nobody seems to share and help progress you on your riding journey quicker than I did on mine.

Hi Karen, Pig oil is amazing rub in too the bullbs of there heels toi keep mud fever at by so that will come in handy in winter and add add old cider vinegar too it as well if you wanted too. But give her vitamin E supplements and Garlic powder you can get from any feed stores or online. And give her scoop of each for powder her weight mixed up In hand full of chaff with some molasses so she has her vitamins. As supplements are the key to get good coat and shine and I use to boil barley up with linseed oil and feed it once a week and that is great for coat health too ;) and keep grooming. The feathers every day to keep clean and dry in summer and dry with towel really well after they become muddy and rinsed off, I used same method for my section D as they have more feather than others with me. And fish oils is amazing too for hair growth and health ❤️❤️ got 50 years of experience of welshys and so dose my dad and grandfather as well :-) shame I can’t sent photos of me and my grandad producing D’s for sone one els and sec B’s and His own cobs and he and my dad taught me loads and I am 52 year young xxx

Ps my old old remedy for brining white tail and feathers out is wash the tail in purple shampoo and rinse it well and mix in a bucket net curtains whitner powder it will turn blue or purple and dip the tail in too the bucket leave in for 5min to soake it and then wala pure white tail and use it on the feathers too. And rins really well and loads of conditioner and I mean loads and leave it in for good 5 min and rins out . And dry it and then once bone dry get a old woman pair of tights and put the tain in the tight and wrap a tail bandage to hold the tight in place to keep the tail clean over night ready for the show ring do not remove till you are ready to turn them out for the show ring. It works amazingly well and give you few of my showing tricks lol and I use loads of powder chalk and I have used cornflower too :-) And I use so many tricks lol

the only thing i know of that makes hair on animals grow back faster was only from accidental wounds that took both skin and hair off the surface. We put vitamin E oil on it and the skin and hair grew back amazingly fast. i dont know if that would work or not for what you need it for but just tossing it out there if maybe it could be applied.

Two rescues at my work place look like Pip. Well different colours but they look like the same breed. By work place I mean it’s more of a college placement.

I have an ISH now, so I don't have the hassle anymore. lol Baby oil was my best friend when I had my cob. It keeps the mane and tail smooth and shiny, even the feathers too much of it, but enough to brush through. Pig oil is a good mud barrier and also can deter mites as bedding a cob on straw can bring them. It won't help much with the growth of feathers etc, but will help maintain it. I always kept the Maine and tail plaited. Some omega oil is fab for a shine and healthy feathers. Don't overwash feathers either, it take all the healthy oils out. A lot of cobs can get mallanders and salananders (mine had it) and most cobs I know have it. The scabs on the back of the knee just keep an eye out there is no treatment for it, but it becomes uncomfortable and itchy there are a lot of creams out their if it occurs. Farrier cream is fantastic for it. She's a beauty

Beautiful girl! She looks so similar to my gypsy Vanner! Defiantly in terms of maintenance for her, if you oil her feathers weekly (even 2x per week) you will find her feather will be gorgeous! And so much more easier to maintain and clean etc. I learned from a lady that breeds and shows candians how to oil. Take a squeeze bottle and fill with mineral oil and you can add 2-3drops or frankincense pure essential oil in the bottle as well. Then oil her legs by putting the squeeze bottle to the skin and go down in rows like a ladder all way to the coronary band and even on her hoof. Then comb through. They will be so beautiful. You can do the same on the roots of her main and tail :) good luck! :) I think I found some info on RU-vid on the proper way to oil when I was first learning. It also help keep away feather mites etc. but by doing twice a week you will find maintaining her soo much easier :)

Pip is soo cute. We have a gypsy and it's true, they just want to be your best friend. They love to know the answer and thrive on being told when they get the answer right. We trim the face hair with scissors (looks so much better), plait the forelock, french braid the mane, and leave the tail. Brushing it just removes hairs.

@@KarenBadrick1 i wonder what her markings are genetically as she shows characteristics of both Tobiano and Overo patterning... very unique and striking. She seems very sweet too and will make a fab wee pony for ur grandchild. You could even train her to pull a wee trap too for fun, since she's a bit on the small side for an adult to ride. So much potential tho, im excited for you to bring her on as she grows up. You got a good one there i'd say. x

Hi, I use NIVEA Sun Protect & Dry Touch Sunscreen Spray SPF50 200ml on my cob’s pink nose, start in May, as soon as there’s any warmth in the sun, spray once a day whilst feeding him bits of carrot, ( prevention is better than cure as far as sunburn is concerned ). Only had one year with a burnt/blistered nose - when I first got him, horrendous, and then very difficult to get any protection onto it. The one I’ve recommended is a very quiet, gentle, misting spray, he doesn’t mind it at all - what did Pip’s previous owner use?

I was distracted for for first part of the vlog by the red kites in the background 🦅 there are fair few near me love them 😊. I have 3 cobs only 1 is fully clipped out all year round, the other 2 are like pip full hair, I'm not keen on pig oil especially on the pink skinned cobs it seems to irritate them, I use equi oils on their feathers, it's amazing stuff! deters mites too. Shapleys mtg on root of tail. I don't plait their forelocks in the summer as it's a good fly fringe. I keep. Manes plaited, but not tails. Pink nose I prefer sunblock rather than suncream hope it helps 😊

15:58 the fun and cute hair dos and platts to keep them cool is half the fun. Ribbon and bows go a long way in cuteness overload 😉 scissors beard trim for sure… it’s the whispy belly hairs that tickle me… Pip is so adorable. Only thing I’d worry about is that very pink nose and potential sunburn. Keep eye on that. Very sweet pony

Pip is such a sweetheart, I don't envy you looking after all that white, pig oil on the feather does help with condition and growth and if you suspect mites you can use pig oil with sulphur in it, just be careful when using oil in the sun, basically you want to keep them moisterised because when they get dry they are like straws and suck up all the wet and muck and also snap off, keeping the mane and tail plaited does help with growth, her tail will grow pretty quickly, plenty of conditioner when you wash it, as for her forelock, that can be plaited too, sometimes they get so long that they hang down over their nostrils and get in their feed. When brushing the feather if you hold al the hair upwards and start brushing from the bottom, letting a little bit of hair down at a time as you brush. As you say turnout for the ring is similar to the D's but the tail is banged straight and you'll want a nice white Halter, although having said that, as she has a white head a leather one would look equally nice. Can't wait to see her all glammed up x

Pig oil is great for a mud barrier but also growth As suggested add sulphur for mites which they are pretty prone too But also mtg is great for growth Look up a women on you tube called Sue helen shuttleworth she owns and produces a lot of traditional cobs and has put a couple of videos on what products she uses and how to care for manes , feathers and tails of the heavy set

She is very sweet, you may have seen but if you can French plait like plaiting their tail for a show you can do a French plait down the back of the feathers to try and keep them clean. Blue fairy liquid is also a must for bathing, the brite whites Lemieux purple shampoo is also the best I’ve bought x

It would be handy to buy electric fencing to cut both your paddocks in half to allow grass to grow, as over grazed. Unless it's for laminitis prone ponies/ horses.
@KarenBadrick1
@KarenBadrick1 25 дней назад
We have just been having a conversation about electric fencing to cut the paddocks down more, We are right next to the river so the grass is far to lush, and welshies are known to be good doers so they can’t have to much of this grass as they are to fat already The paddock out the back is far to long that they can’t go out there for long as otherwise they will end up with laminitis

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that your going through this now, Willow put a hole in his left hind, suspensory branch, It did take nearly a year of rehab, and red light therapy to get him back right He had his leg iced each day and had magnetic boots on at night I have been advised not to jump him anymore as it will just put strain on his back leg If you have any questions then please just ask, Fingers crossed for a quick recovery ❤️‍🩹 x

Karen's baaaack yesss, you've got a good filly there,having her out on her own will desentisise her to the noise and help with her traffic awareness (it's so busy where you are) I didn't notice that till today. Liked the way she came to you when called, my youngster does the same now , think he learnt that from being out with my other two. Am not preaching at you Karen but when yous working on her back feet please make sure your not too close to the wall as you've no room to get out of the way, ( a hat perhaps) till she's comfortable with her back feet being handled, it'll also help the farrier too. Anyways till next time 👍💯 Phillip

Haha 😛 The camera doesn’t seem to pick it up much but she’s a little chunk Yes we’re on a very busy road (hence why I can’t hack out straight from my yard) but luckily on the yard we don’t hear much of the traffic. Yes the confined space is not good when teaching the youngsters to pick there back feet up but I think she was testing me this day as she now seems fine with letting me do all of her feet
