After a long journey we finally get to embark on our first test drive of the freshly swapped E31 8 series, now equipped with the M60B44 Frankenmotor. A budget friendly key to more power and more fun in your obd 1 V8 BMW. But was the heavy, expensive, flashy E31 8 series the right car for the engine? Thats another story.....

Other then the auto you're describing my E39 540i/6 ownership in a nutshell. It had power, it was smooth, it was technically fast, but man it didn't want to play. If you tried to drive it aggresively it would fight you. Very comfortable place to go above the number on the sign with a great stereo and heated seats but everything about it was oriented to comfort vs wanting to play. It honestly felt more Mercedes then BMW given the era it was made

This is a very interesting comment that im glad you mentioned, it further helps me solidify my opinion on e39s. Boring comfort oriented cars compared to their predecessors! E34 is awesome. E39 took noticeable leaps in comfort/ luxury just like these E31s

This channel is such a gem dude, I love BMWs but in my area the older ones are insanely hard to come by, I've learned so much from you. Josh you should definitely consider the m60b44 for an e39! Though a 3 series would be soooo badass.

this is really sad to see about e34’s being so hard to come by in Canada :/ & while it serves no real value or purpose, i often think that if i keep & really put money into my e39 touring, i’d love to put an m60b44 into it, built right. maybe, godwilling, we could see my m60b44 e39 wagon on josh’s channel in the future, next to his own m60b44 e34. Even better if it’s a wagon in black to match mine, or a calypso wagon like the OG. Who knows!

I think the best and most obvious answer is that it should have been in a HE53 e34. I think if you pop a 420g into it, (all be it expensive, i know i’m looking for one in my 530 5spd swapped, 540) it’ll be 10x more enjoyable and sell-able but thats my opinion

@@m3nameisjosh464 do you still have your zf5 540? could always swap that into it, i remember that yours had some gremlins because lack of care its whole ownership before you. so maybe a fresh start on a he53 would be better. just gotta find a 3.15 below $1600! lol

Jesus, this motor in a E34 chassis, that would be a racket!. Back in the day I had two E34s, one M20B25 motor auto, the other a Euro Touring M50TU with 5speed euro Dogleg. The Touring was way heavier but it's close gear ratios made it fun to drive. Shift linkages converted to E30M3's it was short and very quick.

I've seen m60b40 and m62b44 swaps on e30s and i think THAT'S the opposite of what happens to your e31, they look like a super raw power drift machine experience.

Very well done Josh. Nice to just see the 8 series. My next and last dream BMW to drive is the E60 M5, again. I've not been excited for any BMW after that one and great to watch your channel for the old school BMW still after all these years.

I understand where you're coming from. That engine would be a better performer in a e34. But your age shows in this video. Not saying am an old man, but that's who BMW was targeting with this car rich old men. They wanted a comfortable GT car. I can see myself getting into an e31 in the future.

What you want is this engine, but with the steptronic 5spd from 4.4 cars, sports cats and a hotter large case diff, and that would probably round off a lot of your reservations.

can’t wait for you to find another keeper 540 before they reach unobtainium & try this again. I think the biggest opportunity missed here will be your long term documentation of an m60b44 “Frankenmotor”. Really curious for your specific ownership style & what issues or benefits this has long term, it’s always been my favorite bmw brainchild since i first found out about it. Good shit & great work per usual big dog, paving the way for the rest of us!

Thank you man!!! I’ll definitely be looking for a 540i to redo this build in!! Then we can do long term documentation. Realistically from now on it should be a care free motor! No timing chain guides to worry about!

Ι think that the best candidate is the S62 V8 engine from the E39 M5. A bulletproof engine with a power output to match the beauty of this car.

Man, everything you said and how you feel about that car is literally the same for me, when I listen to you it's like I'm listening to myself. The only thing that (maybe) can help here to get what you need is a manual and a much, much stronger engine, in the past I have same automatic like that and it is very bad for fun, I tried manual in another e31 850, it is much beter but need minimum 100-150hp more to have that what I looking for

You really need to try to drive an 840 with a 3.15 lsd out of a 750il and a 6 speed. Hooks better and grabs turns a whole lot better. The driving experience is a lot better. It'll feel like a sportier 2 door e39 540. And look up quick arms for the e31. They turn the lazy steering box into a sporty habdling experience, they genuinely feel like a tight rack and pinion.

I saw a post online where this guy turned round and said comparing it to his m60b40 he felt like it made the m60b40 feel tame and lazy by comparison 😳 Now, I had an m60b40 in my e30 and my god I'd not describe the m60b40 as lazy or tame by any stretch 😂 I did feel though, that the m60b40 really came on song at around 3400 rpm that's where thr punch was but the m60b44 has that punch and more from way down the bottom from everythig I've seen. I've got my engine built and ready to go in the e30. I'm just waiting to collect my gearbox from having a full strip down and overhaul so won't be long until I get to feel it in my e30 but I've gone all out with it. I have a 6 kilo billet flywheel, 4 to 1 custom stainless manifolds, no cats, no mid box, lighter vw lifters with the view to go cat cams later on and standalone management to squeeze thr most out of it. Literally can't wait 🙈😳

I think that post is completely right! Its definitely a much more fun take on an already fun motor. Especially in an E30!! I bet thats a riot!!! But remember an e31 weighs probably 1500 lbs more haha, so a B40 hardly moves it! Your car sounds like it will be absolutely insane when done!

​@m3nameisjosh464 I've always really liked the e31 but I see what you're saying. You don't feel the best of the swap due to the weight. Probably would suit supercharging the m60b40 in that car and put the frankenmotor into an e34 or something you feel would be more fun? One thing for sure though, it definitely goes better than a normal 840 and from what you're saying, an 850 too which speaks volumes for the frankenmotor 😎 If I get 350 NA I'll be happy for sure

Before I continue watching I feel like you really should have swapped it into a white E36 coupe because everything you're saying leads to lighter vehicle keeping the raw experience while having it slightly more up to date than a E34 and still keeping the same style minus the dope window on e31

I put an m60b40 into my e30 and it was incredible fun.! I loved it. But then I decided to pull it and do the m60b44. I'm nearly ready to put it back in the car so I can see what it's all about but if someone says you can get 50 to 70 bhp over a stock 4.0, hell im gunna do it lol

I had a 4.4 840Ci 20+ years ago, bought it certified from a BMW dealership. I always wanted one so, you know, f*ck it. It was a nice car. I sold it after a year. What did it do a 540i doesn't? Nothing. The E34 is a heavy old lump as well. I'd be putting one in an E36. It's a LOT of work (sump/crossmember/rack etc) but....... Getrag 420 6 speeds are too much ££££ now, but there are conversions to use a 3.0 diesel gearbox with flywheel/clutch and they are worth peanuts.

@@m3nameisjosh464 Yeah it was nice, especially with a warranty. 840 brakes were known to be crap at low speeds (Brembos) but overall I enjoyed owning it. A friend had an E39 540i manual though - and I thought it was a better car.

@@m3nameisjosh464 I drove IN a supercharged m60 e30. INSANE. Didn't personally drive it lol, but from the ridealong it's great. Had the vf looking supercharger on it. Unsure if It was dinan or vortec

can i ask you for advice, I have 91 E34 M5 getrag280 trans and I cant get the throwout bearing out!! Do you have any tips or ways to get it out? thanks. I'm using a claw clamp to press it out not moving.

Im thinking throw out bearing isn’t the correct name for the component youre referencing because TOB slides on input shaft and should slide right out.

if it is your pilot bearing you can use a self tapper and pry it with a hammer

To remove pilot bearings, I suggest using a blind hole puller with a slide hammer. I found a nice set from Proto used. A rod is inserted into another rod and connected to a slide hammer. It is expanded by the rod going through to enter the hole before expansion and then is trapped after expansion of the tips of the tool. The slide Hammer is used to reverse hammer it out. If you wanna change throw out bearings you can toss away your bread and grease and just use this. I don't see how bread will take out a 2008 535i manual tranny throw out bearing.

When you do these frankenswaps like this one, are you using the ECU from the same engine? Or how are you getting the electronics to work from the E31 with the M60?

Honest? The m62tu 4.4 makes 280 ish hp at the crank. How does taking that bottom end with the m60 heads make more power than either the m62tu or the m60?

there’s also a 4.6, but it’s not about that. If you payed any attention at all, the reason he specifically doesn’t talk about those engines much are the same reason he referenced the s62. If more power is all you want, & price not is not a factor, there are other engines that do this already. m62, s62, etc. or other mods for the same cost to obtain similar power. but the point IS the cost, not the power. & even more so the cool factor

the design of b40 heads when paired with the 4.4 bottom end increases the compression to 11:1, likely related to deck height or something that I don’t quite know off top of my head but increased compression makes more power.

Yup. M60b40 heads flow better, the cams are the hottest cams from the factory in any of this family of v8's, the m60 heads as josh mentioned on the m62 bottom end bumps compression ratio up by a whole point sometimes just over a whole point and depending what headgaskets you chose. I chose the 1.74mm mls ones for mine so i shoukd see 11.3:1. All of this combined makes more power and torque than m60, m62b44 and m62b44tu . It just works

You may have already said in one of your other videos or somewhere in this one, but have you put this franken motor into another chassis? Or an M60 into a previous M50 e34? Reason I ask is because I have a very high mileage 93 525i with the M50 b25 tu with auto engine, and have a donor M62B44 in my '97 740iL which I was thinking I could possibly swap over, especially if I could find a six-speed manual trans to go with... And then upgrade the 740iL to a 4.6is engine...

850CSi is what a German James Bond would drive. I'm a huge nerd for E31s - this build is making me want one even more, V8 or V12 I don't care as long as it's manual. My E39 is a nice and quiet sitting space regarding road noise and big bumps - the quietness of luxury is more valuable to me than the thrill of feeling connected to the road at this point in my life.

I would love an E31, but to me it's not a "fun" car. You don't really care if it's fast, or that it's boaty. It's not something you wanna throw around. It's a baller ass big coupe and thats the fun part. You don't really see these much either. I'd totally stance it out on air and i generally hate stance cars. I'd drive it to meets primarily and just take it for icecream when the weather is nice, and just look at it cause they are good looking cars. I don't want it to be loud and stiff and do all the things that you would do to an E36 or even an E34.

E31 are meant to be GT (Grand Tourer) therefore they meant for cruising and long journeys, they built for comfort, not fun.

I had an old 840ci. Miss that car! Put a manual swap or shorter rear end. It wakes them up pretty good!

i must admit i wasnt expecting this next video being like this but listening to everything you saying abou the car and it not being for you it now all makes sense i totally get you and i know you well enough now you want to feel connected and a car that can put a smile on your face but we was the same when we had one arrive at our workshop we got in it drove it and wasnt as good as what you wanted to expect from a childhhod memory motor they was but keep up the great work josh loving your honest opinions its what makes your channel

530i would only solve the trans. E31 needs specific driveshaft and shifter linkages

I’d have to agree that the e31 just isn’t exhilarating to drive. It’s a beautiful and comfortable place to be. But with that tall rear gear and especially the early 4 speed slush box - just lacks a fun factor. Bet it would make an awesome cross country cruiser. Great build nonetheless Josh.

​@@m3nameisjosh464that 4 speed is really only good on the highway and really only good with the v12. I bet a 6 speed swap would make this car move out a lot faster. 4 tall gears are really only good with the v12

I have a ‘95 740i as my first car and I’ve been considering this hybrid engine for a while because of my budget, I’ve enjoyed this little series you did, it gives me all the smaller bit of info ive been missing from online. Only think stoping me now is the extended driveshaft for a manual swap

Manuals in these and e38s are not good at all. Theyre too big, heavy, boaty, etc. Automatic trans suit the car. If i had a money no object build for one of these v8 or v12 id source one of those old supercharger kits. And do an 8hp trans. Great highway cruisers. (Im a huge fan of m6x engines, especially 4.6 and 4.8)

Ive heard very similar to that. Everyone says manual swap it but lots of people also say its not a good car manual, and HONESTLY I can see that, kind of not regretting leaving it auto

@@m3nameisjosh464 yeah I have friends who 6sp swapped their e31/e38 both v8 and v12 and they all hated it because they're just not sporty. Some people like it, but it's rare that they feel it was worthwhile.

I'd respectfully disagree. The e31 changes with a manual transmission. It's still a grand tourer, but you're in control and you have an extra gear (or 2)

You are just building an m62 out of 97/98 540 /740i non vanos obd1.Using 4.6 out of an x5 is 340hp 350lb-ft with non vanos heads, intake and exhaust manifolds will get you to the 350hp.

@@hexagonosaurus5848 sorry 350rwhp, plus your building a bullet proof engine removing any weak points. All parts can be found at pick n pull. Peak hp is not the goal but raising the entire torque curve, this engine will easily out perform e39 m5 s62 at a fraction of the price. It also gives you instant torque at any rpm , where as S62 you would need to down shift and by that time your gone.

@@m3nameisjosh464 I understand, m62tu are easy to find.. and great upgrade to a m60. Just pointing out that your building something that already exists. 97/early 98 540i, 95 to 97 740i. And some 840i in that time frame. Until obd2 and vanos / air injection / running hot/ 4 cats ..... and the 4.6 (alpina motor) are the 340 hp motors , not going to make that power in any m60 /m62tu configuration without sending it to Vac motorsports and spending thousands. Here in Canada we had a ton of 840/850 in 2005 from Japan all rhd and cheap $3000 to $5000. But like you say , its heavy , needs 500hp ( like the dinan car) to be any fun, but a stunning car to look at.

@@freecanadaplease but what I built isnt an M62b44, theres another comment touching on what the B40 head does on a 4.4 bottom end, better flow, compression changes, it makes it more powerful than a 96+ M62b44. Of course not 4.6 and S62 power but proven gains over stock M60 or m62

The viscous coupling needs to be removed and the electric fan can be installed, it can be installed from the Volvo 940 together with the power steering relay should be replaced with an electric hydraulic booster, from Opel Astra is suitable, the gearbox 5-speed ZF 310 or 320 from e34 530 v8

@@m3nameisjosh464 I do not advise you to do it with E31, it can be done on E34 or E30, it will undoubtedly add power because this procedure will relieve the load from the crankshaft, if you put a 5-speed gearbox of the rear axle needs with a gear ratio of 3.15

@@m3nameisjosh464 usually people do it because viscous coupling is not very efficient and it also might jam. so basically,switching to a efan will remove some load from the crankshaft and add some power, but as i said, you usually switch to efan bc of poor cooling by viscous coupling especially when your motor is modified and makes more power and heat than designed from a factory
