Love this 67 Ghia ! Such a solid car , great shots of the 1 year only dash , working org radio , no saggin clapped out drivers door hinge . I have to do the oil cooler seals on my 67 Ghia Vert too , shop looks awesome & Congrats on your 1st drive 👍.
Thanks man! It really is a nice car. I can't wait to get it road worthy. Make a video in the oil seals replacement if you have time. That would be cool!
@@CTmoog do what you want man... Your channel. Go for it. Don't dump a ton of money into it right now. Get it rolling, stopping, fix the oil cooler seals and run it. So fun to have a driver while you work on the other project. The green light is oil pressure light. That needs to go out and maybe will once the seals get fixed. But should be addressed! Might also be the pressure switch itself. Doesn't have to be perfect. Just safe. I say go for it. Your call
Good to know about the new equipments and tools, and also that Rusty is still in the radar. The Ghia is a tough guy, it will be nice to see it alive and kicking again. By the way, I like your area, it reminds me of small Brazilian cities.
Hello Aquias, Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching and commenting. I would love to visit Brazil one day. THANK YOU! =) Stay tuned for more! =)
I brought my first car a1960 Karmann Gia for $10 from a local junk yard. I worked on it for 2 years behind my mothers house. Rebuilt the engine tons of body work I drove that car for 4 years Loved that car
Hi CT, just had breakfast and watched your video. Cool getting it in gear and runs good. Yes allot of work yet but fun. The engine leak is from the top it looks like and agree when you pull it may as well tear it down and replace the seals and gaskets. With good cleaning and paint the covers it will look like a new engine. Well back to Rusty then. Would like to see the running gear together and electrical so it's street ready so you can start showing it. Then do the same on the ghia then the porch. Once they are all street ready then get going on the body work with your new compressor. Oh suggestion, you could frame it in with a sound proofing and door. Just around the compressor. You could even build something outside to put it in. Then run lines into your garage
Check the rubber bushing in the front of the transmission through the trap door under the back seat. It may be roton and not letting it shift correctly. The oil leak looks like the two little gaskets under the oil cooler. Good luck and I do enjoy your videos.
Hi, I stopped by because I was curious about your 'rust killer sweeping machine' and then I found out you are restoring a Karmann Guia which was very common in Brasil in 60's - 70's . Nowadays a restored Karmann Ghia you can find starting around 30K USD.
It is oil cooler seals for sure. In a ghia that can be fixed in the car. As far as welding if you are using the mig gas get some .025 or .023 wire. It will help you from burning through the metal.
Thank you for bringing us along. Really enjoying the journey with you. You give us a great view even when you are under the car in tight spaces! That can’t be easy! I especially appreciate that you make the extra effort to shoot these videos horizontally so they look good on our monitors and TVs! It’s great to see these classic Volkswagens getting some love!
That's what Rusty could use: a nice 1500 engine. That extra 13 hp. is huge. A lot of people say it's hard to feel the difference between 36 and 40, but nobody says they can't feel the difference between 40 and 53.
Yes, I'm going to build another engine for Rusty that has more HP. I want to keep his original engine stock and have another one we can swap out. Thank you! Stay tuned! =)
Hello guy, my namoe is Marcus and I´m from Brazil. I like your video very much. Congratulation for your Ghia, this car ir very precious here. You are a good person. God bless you.
Hello CT, the oil os leaking from the oil cooler seals, insiste the dog house. Easy to fix. Just drop the oil, remove the dog house and change the two little rubber seals below the oil cooler. Keep going my friend. Congrats.
Oil leak on top of the engine is most likely the two seals under/between the oil cooler under the fan shroud.. Bit of a pain to do as I recall. Need to remove some of the tins to get at all the bolts holding it down. But actually easy see if it is the problem. Although oil normally run down the other side. Proof you oil pump works any way😀
I think that your ghia is a gem... funny thing, I thought that you posted a day ago and clicked on CT FUNG and was quite surprised lol thanks again sir
Sunday Morning, Cold, Berlin. Was so excited with your new equipment. As for the Gia WOWWOWWOW motor kicked in. That drip know you will resolve and You’ve got yourself a JEWEL. I’ll be watching rusty too. I’ll continue being a close as possible watcher. One of these days you should visit BERLIN, not far away by train is the factory and VW MUSEUM. Put it on the list of things to do. Keep safe Stay well! John
Generally when get a compressor that big you solid Mount it to the floor that is not something u have roller wheels mounted to it's like saying look mr burglar its ready for you to just cut the power and. Roll it out to your vehicle I'm only telling you this because my shop got broken into and they took a lot of stuff but only were able to move my big compressor about a foot before giving up anyway when you start buying equipment like your large air compressor and your parts blaster you might want to invest in a sir valance system helped me get my stuff back but anyway great content
Hey Tim, that is great advice. I'm going to bolt it to the floor this weekend. This compressor is so heavy you would have to a crane to move it out. I do have a security system with cameras and I also have homeowners insurance, dogs and some other devices as well! haha! =)
@@CTmoog right on bro that had just happened to me recently by people I would never have expected my damn neighbor they went as far to come up on the blind spots of two of my cameras and cut the wires but had no idea about the hidden ones I know tools and equipment is not cheap awesome projects you got going can't wait for more videos and content
hello, sorry for my english, i'm from brazil, this vw engine is very popular here, you can find parts easily, this carburetor that you use, is manufactured here, still many parts of beetles, kombi's, suspension parts. .. so congratulations on the project, I love this car, still dream of having one, advise to put electronic ignition, because less work, and works much better and if one day want to venture, buy 2 Webber carburetors, is perfect! If you need parts, look for: Mercado Livre on google! there's a lot of stuff! That's it, good luck! I will continue to accompany you!
The chrome on your Karmann Ghia needs some love! Steel wool followed by metal polish would make it look so much better. Also, your neighbor down at the intersection has a 1970s GMC Motorhome. Those coaches are so cool.
Magic Words: I'm going to start back working on Rusty! I understand your excitement with your newest acquisition, but you get side tracked more than any one person I've ever known! Ok enough Bitching...cool video. ...Newk from Kentucky
Engine needs to come out for a refresh...new seals, all new hoses, ducts for heating, etc. I'm sure the fuel pump diaphragms are shot, so possibly why you weren't getting fuel. I'm excited to see how Rusty turns out too!
Time to pull the engine and replace a few seals. Most likely culprits are the oil cooler seals, the rear main seal and the pushrod tubes. If there is no leakage around the tubes then just the oil cooler and main seal should do it. You'll need a clutch alignment tool for this one as well as rusty-crusty. I'm with Tim about you bolting down the compressor. Besides being easy for a thief they like to d the Mambo across the floor. Keep the faith... you'll be on the road soon.
Hello Chuck! I'm leaning towards doing a complete rebuild. It will be good experience and I really enjoy the entire process. I want to try and get a few more HP out of it as well. Thank you! Stay tuned for more! =)
Hi CT you make great videos! I love your neighborhood. The trees are awesome. The oil leaks can be filed really fast especially in a Ghia since there's so much room. Take off the fan shroud when the motor is in the car and replace the two oil cooler seals. Two hours max. The compressor will be a little quieter if bolted to the floor👍💪
Hello Graem! Thanks you! Yes, it's a nice place to live. That is good to know. I might do that soon. Yes, I'm going to bolt it to the floor this weekend. Stay tuned for more! Thank you!
Ghia's engine runs wonderful. Air cooled sound is stunning. Leaks are normal after so much time went by. All your Volkswagen vehicles and Ford truck have nice patina. Don't change it. Nice to see a piece of your neighborhood. You must be a rich man to live there. Is this the place you have grown up ? Greetings from germany where Florida is regarded as a paradise and popular vacation destination.
Good job as always man. Oil cooler seals are a simple, quick fix especially in a Ghia.... More of a pain in a beetle. Keep on moving forward and having fun!
Thanks man! Having fun is the most important thing! I have really learned to appreciate the art of being a mechanic. I have a long way to go but it's really fun!
Great job CT, I suggest youy stick with Rusty and get it so you can drive it, your others are safe and sound for now, when you want to take a breather from rusty, do little things on the other one for a break ,
Too bad about the Ghia dude, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. She definitely has a lot of potential and will be a great driver. In the meantime though seeing Rusty coming back up will be Awesomeness! The air compressor is so quiet you can't even here it from the street. Nice!
Agreed likely its the oil cooler (inside fan housing over #3 cylinder) seals. Also probably why your oil pressure (green) light is on. Keep in mind that these only have 2.5 qts of oil in them when they are full and there is no oil filter. Use Straight weight 30 or 40 in summer, 20 wt in winter (that was VW's recommendations), might need a zinc supplement for the cam/valve lifters.
I had a 1973 Ghia that I bought used from a VW dealer. It looked great, but beneath the skin was a very weak motor and cheap construction (including some particle board in the interior). Although I took great care of the car, it was incredibly unreliable. I never knew whether it would start. The "fun" lasted for about four years when I sold it and bought a reliable car with a big engine.
Result on the ghia and I agree put the ghia and Porsche to one side and go to work on rusty !! Always enjoy your videos ct , so keep doing what your doing , vwcoco- uk
Connect the heater hoses to the fan housing. Or else plug up the holes in the bottom engine tin and the fan shroud. Otherwise it will run hot. Congratulations on your vehicles. I’ve owned each one of the ones you have (including a 1966 F-250). I wish I hadn’t sold them
Um lindo carro! Achei estranho os pontos de ferrugem na lataria. Pra mim eram todos em fibra de vidro. Esse carro no Brasil era o luxo da VW. Parabéns pelo vídeo CT.
Hello Comodoro! They are all made from hand crafted sheet metal. It's amazing this one is in such good condition considering it's been in a barn for 45 years. Thank you! Stay tuned for more! =)
Well done CT. First time I saw a VW with wooden brake blocks. lol. Well, you got her started and moving, now you got to get her to go and stop. Nice looking compressor and sandblasting unit. You are doing very well now. Is there a fan on the sand blaster cabinet to ectract dust so you will be able to see clearly ? I love watching layers come off with blasting. I would love a sandblasting job.
Hey Ian! HAHA! Yes, they work great! =) Thanks man! It's VAPOR BLASTER. It uses water and media to blast so there is no dust and no vacuum needed. More on that one soon. Thank you! Stay tuned for more! =)
It just pee a little because it's so excited!! But you really have to focus on Rusty now. But I have to say I look forward to seeing all the cars running and driving :)
Fixing the oil cooler seals is not that terrible. But at 4:13 it looks like the oil level on the compressor ist too low. Maybe you have to check it. Looks like a solid nice car. Have fun.
Yes, doesn't sound like it will be too difficult. I'll take a closer look at it today. The compressor was leaning back at a slight angle so the level was off. I have to get it on level surface and bolt it down this weekend.
by its look, you really expect issues, to the very least , it s still works., .it reminds me the first time i drive,.VW BEETLE, learning to drive by myself..
Yeah... I forgot about those nasty *oil cooler leaks!* Mine's been in semi-storage, so haven't been driving it around as much to develop those leaks anymore...
What are the wheels called, that you put on it? They look sensational!!! Have you ever noticed how this model has inspired so many people to re-upholster it with exotic materials? It shows that Luigi Segre's design is an all time classic in auto history! And, the colour looks great for this model, too! I want, I want!
@@juanmauricioneira7864 Barrier wouldn't make it quieter. The noise would just go around it. It would have be enclosed, insulated with a sound deadener material and ventilated to remove the heat.
That's a nasty ohoil leak you got there! 😆The upside is it wont take much to get it back on the road. So you need brakes and adjust parking brake, throttle cable, clutch cable adjustment and at least it should be a driveable project. 🙂
Those Karma gears are one of my favorites I had a 63 bug before when I was a kid had a buddy that had a Super Beetle with a Porsche engine man that thing was super fast that was High School well good luck to you that sure is a pretty little car
The gias are hard to find because the pan is shortist of all. Were used in buggies and fiberglass body kit cars. The bus had a heavier duty trans axle also used in buggies.
Im no vw expert and honestly ive never touched one mechanically but from what ive learned watching videos here like muste1s channel that looks like the oil cooler area. Theres o ring seals that go bad and piss oil like that
I would keep Rusty's motor covered until you have it assembled and sealed up. Especially sitting so close to the air compressor which will stir up dust every time it kicks on.
I hope you checked the oil in your nice new compressor the site glass looked empty maybe because it was running but you should still be able to see something. Sorry ahead of time if I'm mistaken.
Rusty restauration seems to be a long term project. Wouldn´t it be a good idea to make a much shorter basic restauration of the Karmann Ghia first, as you already went so far? Some quick results and at least one functioning car, instead of three dead bodies standing around for months.
