Facts! 😂 ive owned my 99 white gsx since about 2001 and although shes been through a few heads, blocks, and transmissions and t-cases, she still puts a smile on my face when i launch her at 6k 😂 (when she has her winter 225 tires and not her 255/40zr17s, of course).
Every so often my 17 year old Mazda 3 does something completely out of the blue, like when the thermostat crapped out on a 2 hour drive in 100F heat. Luckily the motor didn't explode (although there weren't any warnings for overheating except when the A/C was auto shut off, but I didn't know that at the time.) I remember getting to my destination and hearing the coolant boiling in the lines. While the car was at the shop, I panicked and bought a brand new 2022 WRX Limited off of the showroom floor... 2 months ago the replacement (5 years old) alternator on the Mazda decided it didn't want to work properly anymore, so I had to spend about triple what the car is worth in scrap to get everything back up to par (drive belts and other junk down there). I guess I'm not gonna let this car go out quietly either 😂
But short Ben also does have a shit box or two and Asian Ben’s evo is nice and he had the FD for a while. So it’s like they each have their thing but dabble in the others haha
Some jb weld, some spray foam, some flex seal… she’ll be all good. 😜 “On today’s episode of Just Rolled In - customer states previous mechanic did some engine work, but now the car is leaking coolant. Advised the customer that he needs a full engine rebuild. Customer declined repairs and pushed the car home.”
You can absolutely get one, just don’t go over 350-400hp on these old cars. They are very happy at that range, but you start pushing things really far when you start going crazy. I had a buddy who had his 4g63 at 400hp for years with no issues
@@ellwoodwolf With motorcycles its very important to calculate the rider in your ratio. so a 400lb/100hp r6 is actually closer to 6lb per hp than 4lbs per hp.
welcome to owning a DSM, I have had my 95 eclipse for 8 years now and its been on jackstands for 6 years, 3 engines, and 2 transmissions later. and as of today its still on stands.
Its easier to say than actually doing that 😂 it will need k engine and transmission, 4wd had to go, ecu, wiring, modifieing bay and subfram and oil pan, and its actualy way taller engine! AND it need lots of money! Remember they were doing this on budget!
It's the DSM curse, K-swap won't save it. Anything you put into a DSM becomes unreliable. The only way is to go rotary and hope that two negatives make a positive.
LMAO i sincerely love how your sarcasm gets darker as every episode goes on ... Also the look on his face is priceless at 5:30 after another breakdown lol
As a 20 year Subaru WRX/STi owner*, and “dsm-curious”, this channel has saved me a lot of money! (my STi is making STOCK hp! which is why it’s still on the road… 😅) *I’m in my 40s - bought my first ‘03 WRX brand new. Replaced it with an STi hatch.
I imagine an alternate universe where cars are too fast and too reliable, and it's a constant headache for people to slow them down and make them more unreliable.
Mr2 spyder and corolla 😊. This hurt to watch. I'm sorry sorry Ben.... I hope you move away from this project and sell what you can. These cars are way worse than RX8s.
The dsm curse is seeming to be real...but silver lining the dsm content has been amazing and i loved how many people came to help and support this build! It looked like it was a rocketship while it was running! G&G=Exceptional/Always
Man I had a gsx back in the day 380whp, this video brings back memories. It ran good when it was on the road needless to say I learned to bring a mini tool box with me and floor jack everywhere i went.
The number of similarities I see between this car and building a 20v 1.8t is insane. Glad to know issues with 20-year-old turbo 4-cylinders are pretty universal!
I owned a 1st gen talon for a month. Drove it for a week. #1 reason i became a mechanic because the repair bills were high for the 3 weeks it was broken.
What I get from this is the engine internals can actually handle the power, but everything wants to blow up because of the sheer force exerted on literally everything by the turbo pressure... Time to ARP/sleeve and v band literally everything :D (after a new block ofc)
I was a huge DSM guy back in the early 2000s...I would love to have one even now when I'm about to hit 40, but they are all gone and so expensive now thanks to cash for clunkers. Even if you can find one, the parts are gone too. Such a sad end for a car that was so much fun
Watching this video with my non car GF. She asks what causes a coolant line to just explode, I pause it to explain how high boost can lift heads and raise coolant pressure because of the leaking combustion gases, and can even blow a head gasket. And right after we play again, the exact thing happened 💀
TIG Weld Fix, Resurface Heads, Lap Valves and make sure they’re not pitted or bent and also check valve guide clearance that there’s no seizing or over-clearance. A TIG Repair will be good to save the head and it will work fine. Be sure that they Peen It. 😊
Eclipse after getting tortured during the road trip: Thank God... I RIP Talon in pieces and getting brought back to life: **The Punisher No No No No Gif**
Wonder why Ben calls that turbo giant. It's an XR5757S, which uses the same compressor and turbine as the UHF FP Green for the Evo 9, which is one of the smallest upgraded turbo's FP sells for that car. It's marginally bigger than a 3071R in terms of wheel size, despite it having a giant compressor cover
incredibly ironic, i took my '90 1g Talon for a spin today after swapping EVERYTHING over from my 93 chassis and it also broke down :D lol knocked a fuse loose trying to do a 3-4 gear pull. Mine probably makes somewhere in the realm of 750-800 wheel on a 67mm 3584rs. Today we hit 49 psi 😱Stock OEM composite head gasket with some ARP L19 head studs.
I had an eclipse for a few years, was in the shop every month. Eventually i tapped out and bought a Type S. Godspeed to anyone willing to live the DSM life.
Man, I could've told you that was gonna fail seeing as it had a Felpro headgasket. Looks like it at least has ARP 2000 studs. (Hopefully better!) If you want reliability, you ONLY run OEM MLS headgaskets and ARP L19 or better headstuds. The DSM "curse" is nothing more than cheaply made aftermarket parts and lack of maintenance. If you know the right combination of parts to buy and you don't cheap out, you can build a really reliable moderately powerful (600whp or lower) 4G63. Doing 35psi pulls with a crappy headgasket will get ya every time though. Even the best headstuds won't save you from that.
Man this just brings me back to convincing my friend at the time years ago not to buy his first talon. Blown engine. Then not to buy his gst eclipse right after. Blown engine. I will say though when and I really mean when these cars work. They are fun
