First of, love your reviews...The price is just way too much for a saloon car at near on £60K...I am just stunned at how prices of cars have ballooned to such heights, and I know that inflation and other factors are hitting us, but deep down I just get the feeling we are being screwed/crushed at every turn from simple household shopping, energy like gas and electric all the way through to larger cost items like cars.. Sorry about the rant...
I'm sure this is down to consumers' increasing acceptance of the ever popular PCP / leasing / financing options. People are happily fooled into thinking they're able to afford purchasing a shiny new car when they're effectively renting them. And the financing companies / car manufacturers are happy to cash upon this new revenue stream.
They're massively more expensive than they need to be - just look at the criminal prices of headlamps now. Just why? The simple bulb lamps in my old Fiat light the road just as well (possibly better) than the fancy LED ones in my Jaguar which are like an overly focused torch and have zero 'peripheral vision' in the light. Bulb cost to replace: £4, lamp unit in Jag: £1500+
The only people who will buy this will be on PCP and the secondhand values will plummet like a stone. I would never spend my own money to purchase a car like this. You EV fan boys crack on. Good luck, I think you're going to need it.
As normal for this Kind of Business Cars. My Passat GTE was at 70K List price and I bought it for 50% after only 13k km and 9 month usage by VW itself. This Cars are at 90% least in first usage at Business...only a very small amount is bought new from private users at all.
Stylling of ID.7 isn't great, looks dated. Volkswagen not really trying hard to design beautiful cars. Supposed its aimed at retired people not young people. Boring car.
That car is D.O.A. It was giga flop in China even tho it starts from 30k euros . No sane person will buy that over model Y or upcoming cheaper Chinese competitors. And with 400 km of range its not good at all, by the way if u have 100% charge and drain in it to 0 %. so 20-80 its more like 300 km . We are way past the point where we should take electric cars as expensive as they are now since battery pack prices plummeted in the last 12 months.
Excellent review, as always. Irrespective of it being an EV - £60k and VW still putting in a manual bonnet strut? Cheaping out wherever they can, that's sad really.
@@PetrolPed there is a company in Ireland doing storage trays for the ID range and the Skoda Enyaq for under the bonnet have you any input on them ,apparently £179 plus delivery plus vat
I wouldn’t trust VW software…. Had my 22 plate VRS at dealer 6 times over 9 months before the crashes and bugs were sorted. I’m done with VW, Audi, Skoda & Seat… My brother is the MD of a software company and he was told by a VW dev that they knowingly rush out buggy software to fix at a later date!
Sadly at $60k, I expect something more exciting, less bloated looking, something more sporty feeling, and less like a floating boat. Maybe an Audi "S" version will be more appealing to me, but I'm sure that will be that much more expensive ($85k?)! Aptera seems to have the best thought-out product for mass-market appeal in the upcoming EV space. I suspect the design will be seen as controversial, but the functionality and price-point will be very appealing in this age of bloated, inefficient, and overpriced rubbish currently being introduced. They also need to offer a 4 seat version for those that need it. I just hope they can make it into production as I think it will be a gamechanger.
No one cares about the List price but the Leasing price. This is a typical Business car and starts at 444€/month...and even Private I would never ever buy this car and would lease it.
Not sure what is going on with vw design for EVs, it seems that they are so focused on the range / efficiency that they have forgotten to actually design an attractive car
I sat in an ID.7 on Wednesday. Unfortunately I didn’t get to drive it, but I did play with the infotainment. Completely agree it is night and day better than the early cars, materials are so much nicer, and it finally(!) has battery preconditioning. The launch edition is still too expensive, but it will clearly get discounted thanks to the ZEV mandate. A Pro S estate will be the one to have IMHO.
@@KangoV That's the Chinese factory built version for starters, and VW will still be selling at a significant loss trying to stem the loss of market share (and failing).
A good move by VW I think. 86Kw option has range of up to 460 miles in summer city traffic. 235 miles in winter on a motorway. 77Kw option has range of up to 420 miles in summer city traffic. 210 miles in winter on a motorway. All according to EVDatabase. Used 6 month old values are around £42K at the moment, so some bargains to be had!
Hmm, at least in Germany Business Leasing starts at 444€,which is a bargain in this Segment...private users are not the Main target of this car like the Passat...sold at 90% to Business customers.
It looks promising. On a personal note, I would have preferred if VW had kept the model names Polo, Golf and Passat for their electric cars. These ID names don't click with me, but I'm sure they have their reasons.
I think the ID names are temporary until the ICE models stop being made. It's possible that there'll be one more generation of Golf and ID.3, and then just the Golf after that.
May be plan B is to go back to petrol/ diesel cars with the old names, that people actually want to own and drive. Personally I am not interested in any vehicle I have to plug in to an electrical output . Non plug in hybrids I could deal with if it had Toyota reliability.
@@cosmicpop Yes, I was thinking of that, too. It's as though VW didn't want to take any risk in case the electric cars would be a flop and not risk damaging the 'solid reputation' of the established ICE variants (except for Dieselgate thing, but everyone seems to havemoved on from that anyway😄).
Yo, VIP Let's kick it..... ICE ICE baby ICE ICE baby All right stop Collaborate and listen ICE is back with a brand new engine Rollin' in my 5.0 With my ragtop down so my hair can blow !
I have an A6 Biturbo diesel. I get 1000km to a tank. No anxiety ever. And since I bought it used, I payed much less than a new one. So no resale anxiety either.
Horse-drawn coachmen hated cars when they first appeared around 1900. EVs are the future so wise up. I have owned a EV since 2015. They are superbly easy to drive. This week I had the misery of using a petrol manual courtesy car from Renault, a Clio with 6 gears. What a pig it was. I had forgotten what a drag a manual car was to drive, noisy, jerky and exhausting. I could not wait to hand it back. Awful old tech that should have died off decades ago. Good riddance.
Not the best looking car. Range quoted is always high but in reality lower. Drive at 70 mph and you won't get 3 miles per kw, 77 kwh times 3 miles per kw is 308 miles. Rapid charging on DC will degrade your battery quicker. If you lease you don't care but if you buy a used one expect the range to have dropped by at least 10% ish which will be 30 plus miles reduction.
350 miles on a 77kv usable battery is around 200w/h it’s almost impossible to get that on a Tesla in summer and we talk about this huge and slow car. The tenge must be closer to 250 than 300 I believe. My model S uses 300w/h during winter and 250w/h during summer.
“It’s a smart looking car”??? Really! It looks like an old saloon car from the 80s and 90s. For me VW have completely failed in the ev market. Every car they have released are bland and boring compar3d to the ice equivalents.
As a motorist for 50 years I enjoy the frugality of my turbo diesel Volvo which will probably see out my car owning years, BUT I do find these ‘no range anxiety here’ ‘I know where my £50k is going’ comments petty and boring now. For younger motorists there will come a time when they can't buy a NEW ice car so electric will be their only option in 10 to 12 years time, so these issues can’t be pushed to one side. Manufacturers have to start somewhere and plan years ahead, future ev's and charging networks will ultimately get better but legislation demands we change. So take it on the chin and grow up, some people want to know how good / bad current ev's are so they can make educated purchases. If you want a new ice car you’ve got 12 years left to get one, keep it for another 12 and you can live your life anxiety free.
Way too expensive but at least its not an SUV. Looks like it could be a sales disaster for VW though, and I'd say the price is the main factor (and the fact EV demand is slowing). Looks like VW stuck with the horrible haptic buttons though - thought they'd have learnt from that one. I'd just add that for an EV, the range is ok, but compared to a modern diesel of a similar size, it's still abysmal.
Over £8k down and £627.75 a month for a car that will do 300 real world miles max in perfect conditions with no air con or heating on and will do 180 miles when the weather turns a bit chilly, will depreciate at a rate of knots, and looks like a Citroen! No thanks. VAG, bring back the Passat!
See VW made the mistake of rushing EV’s on the road and I know one owner who got rid of their ID4 after six months because the infotainment system was shockingly poor and his screen froze so many times. Now I follow Car news but he doesn’t just wanted a Car for the family and got told the Car would do X miles to a charge and it did a lot less so feel he’d been lied too. He said he’d never buy a VW again and amazingly went back to petrol Honda, which I found disappointing as I’m a EV fan. So VW gained a reputation of poor screen response and problems with its system on the screen. That won’t shift for years that reputation, they just bought into damaging the iD brand and they know it. Still overpriced.
It looks like the love child of a Kia and a Mazda. Interior looked cheap and nasty. Option prices make Porsche options look like good value! Test it properly and see but I’d have a small wager with you it won’t make 300m in real world driving. Audi have been fitting the find charging points software on the Etron since launch, having owned one it is pretty good, but what it doesn’t account for is not charger anxiety, but charger rage. This is a thing and I’ve experienced it so many times I no longer drive or wish to drive an EV in this country until we get our act together with commercial charging - not an easy or quick thing 🙁
I'll just never 'get' the logic of battery power for big, long journey vehicles. Without, that is, a real quantum leap in super lightweight, high energy density, rapid charge battery technology. Something always promised and always under-delivered. Small, lightweight, inner city transfer pods make sense. But nobody's focussing on making these
Probably because it doesn't sit well with marketing department. As most people do small journeys having massive battery packs is pointless. I saw a video saying that from an environmental view having a cheaper car and spending the rest on your home is way better, even if the car was ICE
I think the people for whom electric cars make financial sense at the moment are high mileage drivers who can save on petrol. The battery supply is not that huge so all the models are being aimed at the top end of the market which is most profitable. Existing car makers don't want Tesla to "eat all the cream" so to speak.
Sorry but I am not a fan of Chinese cars. Our Defence Minister called China a "hostile State" so why would we buy their cars? Plus their economy appears to be in dire straits. BYD cars also appear to have serious quality problems from what I see on RU-vid.
Initial thoughts were front looks okay, but profile and rear end is fugly!! We all know quoted figures are pie in the sky, and knowing VW’s history for being “economical with the truth” the reality will be interesting to hear. As you infer, shame the manufacturers other than Tesla are only just catching up with the information features.
VW Audi Porsche…when you consider how dominant the Golf was .. Well they had the opportunity to dominate the EV marketplace. Sadly they totally screwed up and now face bankruptcy.
You can get a Corsa ev for 20k with all the discounts. 51k with no heat pump as standard! They just wont sell many, which I feel they will be happy with,
Tesla are good but they are built down to a price - and now they are removing stalks and proper parking sensors. Also, not everyone needs to use public charging - which means going Tesla is not necessarily the obvious choice.
@@SDK2006b True. I went overboard with the ‘won’t sell any’. Many don’t like like Tesla purely for some inferiority complex w Musk, or must have a Euro badge, even though VW is not luxury or quality. Tesla still the superior product, the only argument is ‘stalks and censors’, over and over, for a reason.
@@pieter85 What's the difference length wise? This guy's knees were an inch from the driver's seat! Lol. Each to their own. A simple Google search suggests motor journalists disagree.
Ugly heavy car IMO and way too expensive. Why do they build electric cars like a games console? Far too many gimmicks on electric cars when they should be concentrating on range, not wasting electricity on gimmicks. Not to mention that your car will probably be written off by the insurance company if any damage is found on the under tray. Huge depreassion and the cost of replacement battery makes it a very unattractive consideration. On another note, you're not allowed by law to use a mobile phone whilst operating a vehicle, yet all electric cars use touch screen devices with many sub menus for basic functions. Not for me at all.
We have miles per gallon for ICE cars so we need something for EV's, I suggest Time Wasted At Tedious Stops..we can call them TWATS per mile. How many TWATS did you have to do to reach your destination.
@MyMednas ICE drivers waste nowhere near as much time as EV drivers, all across the country EV drivers are being forced into shit hole places to charge up their cars, they are pathetic for anything other than short journeys charging from home. There is a grid serve not far from me and poor bastards are always stuck in that dump of a place, just sitting waiting and waiting and waiting staring out the windows deprrssed as fuck just waiting to die. It's laughable just how shit slow they are to charge up, even worse after 80%. Not once has my ICE car dictated what fucking carpark I have got to go to or dictated how long I have got to sit and wait in a shitty carpark before I can continue my journey. A car is supposed to be a tool to serve you, not the other way around.
An interesting car🤔. 🐂💩 VW quoted range 400 miles plus, like we can believe anything they say.it needs to be a nice interior because of the hours you will be sat in there waiting for it to charge.
Musk said the Chinese were most competitive in the world. Strong chance that and the EU are going to destroy the European car industry between them. Brilliant 🎉
So the iD range has become a good as the Skoda Enyaq? 😂 Seriously, that is more similar to the Enyaq than the iD4! Especially Interior quality and layout. The 2024 Enyaq battery and new rear motor will be another common feature. Its a nice car but at over 5 meters we know what market its pitched at..
Another car with an ipdad stuck on the dash without one ounce of design though. No matter how clever it is, it's bloody ugly. I couldn't buy a car with a screen like that, no matter how good the rest of the car is.
Any car, where the "tech" is the main attraction, rather than the appeal of the driving experience, the performance, the heart and soul of a new car is not for me. I may be a dinosaur but EVs are about as exciting as a new microwave or dishwasher.
Good car but rather too large for normal use. This type of vehicle is now starting to dominate car parks and they simply don't fit standard parking spaces. I suspect this is all for batteries so they get the range. Much more realistic but to date I still prefer the plug in hybrid. And they all need to get a bit cheaper as these are a second mortgage .....
60 grand for an electric car with a top speed of 112 mph from 280 bhp and possibly 300 miles of range .for that money you could buy a porsche boxster Gts .I know where I would be putting my money. The problem I have with electric cars is they are aiming them at the family buyer. But for half of that money you could buy a skoda octavia vrs diesel estate. That car would easily cover 700 miles on a tank of fuel. And be a fraction of the cost to run .
@@SDK2006b Wait until something goes wrong with it and make sure you don't inadvertantly catch the underside and damage the battery tray as you will be looking at a write off
@@ohyesitsme - an 8 year battery should cover issues there. Also, the battery has a solid metal plate covering it, so the battery is protected - I haven’t heard anything like this happening, outside of click-bait videos !
A great review as always Pete, thanks and keep up the good work. I'm a petrol head, was and always will be, own petrol and diesel at the moment. My issue with ID 7 and all EV's is with their price, its ridiculous compare to the competition ICE. The New 2024 Skoda Super 2.0 petrol or diesel will be about £38-40K with 4x4 and estate option, better value for money. Albite smaller still fun Skoda Octavia VRS hatch is £36K £60k for ''passat'' .........hard pass.
Unfortunately, the amount of money you are going to lose on this car ,as with all evs, is ridiculous , after 5 or 6 years it's going to be worthless, so it's a big fat no for me.
More range is just achieved by bigger batteries that make the car heavier, longer to charge, and more wear and tear on tyres and road surfaces and more expensive.
Hi Ped Another good one, keeping a dinosaur like me up to date!🤭 The most positive and reassuring feature is the link to the charging stations, which I am sure will be a big plus to potential purchasers. Hope you can get a long termer in the future, and put range to the test, and how you will cope with parking in supermarket car park🤭
Really? From what I have seen unless you are charging at home it can be more expensive than filling up with petrol. Furthermore time is money in my life and sitting around an hour waiting for a charger to become free, followed by another hour to charge means a significant amount of time utterly wasted. Factor in the £3:50 for the coffee to numb the boredom and suddenly an EV isn't so appealing. Meanwhile hope it doesn't spontaneously combust on you. Oh, need a new battery? "£50,000 please sir". Decide to sell? "Sorry mate, I know you paid £120,000 for it but after one year it's only worth £40k now". Alas I suspect you have swallowed the pill of stupidity that seems to be the De-Facto state of mind of EVangelists..@@Joe-ud2hb
Great review thanks but you haven't mentioned the negatives with this car. As with all VW's everything is an additional add on. They are still using those haptic buttons on the steering wheel and slider controls on the screen for the heating and ventilation. I also noticed that they are usuing a simple strut to prop the bonnet up, come on VW even the Dacia Duster has gas struts. The drag coefficient isn't that wonderful, my 2020 Ioniq has a lower value. Why, in this day and age do you have to buy a heat pump, I think VW need to up their game, Looks OK interior but the syling is bland.
It all gets down to price ..VW are still smarting from their Diesel gate debacle, the scandal had cost VW $33.3 billion in fines, penalties, financial settlements and buyback costs. The word came down from head office ..''build cars cheaper''.
It was too late in the project timeframe to exchange steering wheel with Real Buttons as promised for New cars by CEO Mr Blume...crash tests needed due to a Security part including airbag, changed Software since Touch uses different interface than each Single Button. New Passat already has real Buttons and any Future Facelift of ID7 will most likely change the steering, too.
Come on VW... those performance and range numbers at that price is just too little. I don't want to be THAT Tesla guy but like, my Model 3 has the same range with 500+ HP and 20.000 pounds less and charges at 250KW. How can you be behind by such a large margin?! Not enough
Check the Leasing price for Business...at least in Germany it starts at 444€ and Model Y at 750...Listprice is completely irrelevant for this kind of Business car, since no one buys it.
It’s good to see a legacy manufacturer like VW catching up with Tesla. However, do you remember the old VW ad where people were in non VW dealers and the salesman said “like a VW”. There’s some irony now as you compare the ID7 to Tesla, ‘like a Tesla’. Unless you need the room I suspect the ID7 is going to have problems finding customers. With the Tesla Model 3 now starting under £40K and the BYD Seal much lower in price it’s going to have a tough time.
What has a heat pump to do with charging ? If you navigate and a Charger was added, the ID7 automatically preheats...or you can manual Start preheating. "Battery Live" checked the difference and found only 20km Difference in range...not even worth to think about wasting 1k for this Option. Thankfully this was not added and made the List price even higher. A heat pump helps if you drive very often short distances, since heating the cabin takes a lot of Energy...if you preheat cabin and Battery at Home using your Wallbox before driving, even this advantage is gone.
2.9mi/kwh. very poor range just about 200miles and at motorway closer to 160 miles. don't blame the weather you were driving slow and the temperature was well above freezing. A Tesla would easily manage above 4mi/kwh in these conditions .
Still true at the Moment...but at least in EU the HPCs will have Credit Cars access in Future, since a must now. I have two cards from a local offering and Shell..thats it. Since most people do not drive that often long distance, even it is not the cheapest offer, it does not really matter
Hello Peter. An interesting car and a good EV by the sound of it…I’m not sold on the looks and it is going to be a useful taxi but that is its likely fate. I see the war breaks out again even on your channel where all you are doing is taking us through the cars now coming on sale soEV haters jump to criticise you because you don’t only drive high speed GTI hatchbacks and a dose of old Ferrari’s. They are afraid…not thinking…loads of petrol engines are rubbish and have been for decades…few are “gems”. If you say a word AGAINST EV’s then those who have “ seen the light” bite. Just this week I happened to see one of the new electric hire scooters suddenly burst into flames as the rider approached on a cycle path. The speed and ferocity was astonishing and it fired burning plastic over a 5m wide area and filled the whole road with acrid smoke. I posted the tale out of interest..surprise…I do have a film on my dash cam but my words attracted some very nasty comments and I was told it was all fake and one told me that my “LandRuver” was far more likely to burn down car parks and kill people! This hate has to stop…I’m too confused to change my car but I fear the future and that vigilante groups will form to attack every type of car that they disapprove of so best buy old…that terrible 20 year old Astra I had for a day was interesting…nil value, covered in dirt and mould, nobody cared if it was locked and yet it drove very well…is that an answer?? Stay safe! Richard😬🎉🤔🤔😄😄😄
At the Moment there is a Discount in Germany and starts at 52k €...almost as low as expected...since all Assitant Sytems and Headup are included in this base, the price is no surprise. You can simply buy the base and will not miss too much, which was never the case for a VW in the past.
We're clearly getting towards the end of this 2nd generation of EVs and I'm waiting for the 3rd. The generation with solid state batteries, stuff that will charge in 10 minutes and hold a range of 400+ miles, or less and be lighter / cheaper. It'll be an interesting space from 2025 thru 2030 for sure. Personally for me my eNiro (with it's built in heat pump) is more than enough for everything I do, but I appreciate there's the odd person who wants more and everybody wants a lower screen-price. btw - an aside, eNiros like mine can be had second hand for £16k now - a total steal for a very rounded car. Mine's done 50k miles and has a battery SOH of over 99%.
all i care about is the id gti. tht willl be the game changer i think. this is just another over priced electric vehicle.. all evs atm r price gouged as ppl r buying them to save a buck on gas. including my self who just bought a bolt euv. we r gunna see price increases over the next 5 years then prices r prob gunna level out nearing 2030.
If you’re testing a family car, then test it with a family in it and some items in the boot.I wonder how many families ie typical couple with 2 children can afford £60000
Loved the review of the ID7. Can’t wait for VW Australia to get their act together (no ID models avail here till mid 2024) Look forward to a longer test thanks
As I’ve said many many times. I don’t believe EVs are the only solution but people need to get their head round the fact they are part of it and not going anywhere 🤷♂️
Have you driven an EV? They are much nicer to drive and more convenient not having to visit petrol stations. Most EV drivers would never go back to ICE.
I haven't got range anxiety anyway, I have a 2008 Mercedes E Class that has got a range of 650 miles plus, working perfectly well. Come back in 15 years time and show me the range that this car has got left after battery degradation has taken it's toll ?
Regarding the Nav system and charging. The system in the Polestar 2 is as good and probably better in that it will show you the nearest chargers, half fast they how many available with 1 top from the Home Screen. The Google Maps system in the P2 thrashes all other systems I’ve seen except the Tesla system and it’s very comparable with it.
@@paulfowler3416this will happen like for the Passat, too. ID 7 is a typical Business car and will flood the used car market after 2 years.
