First Flight as a Licensed Pilot with Family - ATC Audio with Garmin GNS430 Tip

My hangar neighbor at Worcester recommended that I check out Kimball Farm in Jaffrey, New Hampshire for a fun family retreat. This is my dad's first time flying since he stopped renewing his third class medical years ago. My mom has never been a fan of flying, but she's an ideal passenger. Jaffrey lies at the foot of 3,165 ft Mt. Manadnock, which plays a prominant role in the writtings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. This video also features sectionals, airport diagrams, and a handy tip for the Garmin GNS430 GPS.
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

Thanks for the video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you ever tried - Rozardner Flying Bird Reality (do a google search)? It is a great one of a kind product for how to get pilot license minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 at very last got amazing success with it.

Nice approach and landing and good job missing the rocks! Patches and widespread alligator cracking are listed in the AFD but the loose rocks and potholes on runway centerline caught me by surprise when I flew into KAFN for lunch this summer.

+imarocker66 Yeah, thanks. I was just talking to somebody yesterday who purposefully lands off center there to avoid the giant pothole. I forgot about it last time I was there and had to pop my right gear off the ground again to miss it.

Phew. I'll do my best, but they obviously take a lot of my time to put together. You can expect a new one later today, though!! I am a robotics engineer, though I usually just put myself under the label of entrepreneur, because I've found that there isn't anything on this earth that you can't do without a little dedication and a lot of heart. I idolize those like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and I have the craziest dream that I'm just obsessive enough to be like them someday soon. Very interesting you tube channel. Can learn a lot by watching your videos. I am just not convinced about your radio communication: as long as you talk to others in the airplane or adressing to the camera, all is clear. But from the moment on you pass radio messages, you increase your speed and lower your volume, which makes it all less clear. I would suggest the opposite, and I also learned it like that.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 7 лет назад
Glad you enjoyed! The volume at least is just a factor of the audio circuit in the aircraft, but the speed, perhaps it's because I'm based at a towered airport...

Another excellent video. Can I ask what editing software do you use and how do you get the avionics, like the GNS, to overlay on it? Do you make a separate video and superimpose it on your main video. I make basic IFR videos and would like to advance them a bit from the caveman drawings I do 😜
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Marauder92V I do everything in Adobe After Effects CS5.5. Since I'm a long time computer graphics guy, these kinds of effects are actually really easy. I wish that I had an excuse to do some heavier graphics work for this series. The GNS is from Garmin's trainer. Record that separately and import. Sometimes I play other tricks to just make things look perfect, and in sync with the gps in the plane, but that's the basic gist.

Jaffrey's runway real bad now. Pavement is broken . The Airport manager tries to manipulate your take off and landings. You should try the Flight Deck at Keene, NH for a great breakfast , lunch or Dinner.

Interesting videos! Quick question for you: I've noticed that you never leave the carburetor heat on when you land. I also a fly a PA-28-161 and, in the checklist, it says that it must be on as part of the landing checklist. Just curious about your procedures ;)
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+nicogi I think I talked about this in another comment somewhere, but in leu of finding it, I'll just reiterate here. My instructor taught me that if you can spare the wear on the engine brought about by introducing unfiltered air, do it. In the winter months, I leave it on, but during the summer, I do a check for ice as a part of my before landing checklist. If there is no more drop in RPM than normal conditions, I close the carb heat again. I've always felt that this is one of those things that every pilot has an opinion on.
@nicogi
@nicogi 8 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! Interesting point of view, and I agree with you; it's probably unique for every pilot. Where I fly (CYQB), we basically have two seasons: harsh winter and very humid summer, so I guess it kinda makes sense that we leave it on for the entire approach. Carburetor icing is pretty common in the skies where I fly ;)
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
nicogi Hm. Cool. We have all four seasons here, but Humid Summer and Harsh Winter are two of them and I've hardly ever had any icing. Cool to see the regional differences in such things.
@itsumonihon
@itsumonihon 8 лет назад
it's worth paying attention to the air temperature, humidity, whether or not you are flying through any clouds, etc. if your aircraft doesn't suffer from easy carb ice i don't see the point in having it on. always monitor the performance, carb icing conditions are pretty easy to recognize once you know what you're looking for, and once it starts you'd have to be blind to not notice the rpm drop..! your instructor was right, FOD damage not worth the risk
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
itsumonihon Wow! Thanks for making me feel vindicated! There are so many people that will argue the exact opposite, but I think that if you just stay in tune with your engine, and be ready for a reduction in power, and know what it is, it is much better than possibly getting little particles past your air filter and into scratching your cylinders.
