Piper Warrior Nervous Passenger - Runup Checklist and GPS Obstacle Avoidance

My friend Jackie and I decided to go for a quick flight before having dinner with some friends in Worcester. Jackie has listened to me talk about flying for years, but never been in a small aircraft before, so I was prepared for the worst. Despite showing some signs of nervousness, she quickly warmed up to the novelty of flying over the city. On this particular route, there is a 2,000 foot tower almost directly in your path, so I analyze some obstacle avoidance techniques. Consider this your guide to nervous passengers!
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

My friend used to talk about flat spins training all the time on parties. There was a girl among us who was very "adrenaline driven" so she asked him to take her for a trip and perform one, she insisted she can handle it, while i was arguing that it's a really bad idea. Well, after performing one flat spin and recovery she puked all over the cockpit. Nuff said it wasn't a very pleasant ride for both of them lol. I'm glad i stayed out of this. She never wanted to fly again.

@@kralkatorrik34 I'm sorry, What type of aircraft are you practicing aerobatic maneuvers in? I hear a story like this and quickly raise an eyebrow because I wouldn't want to put a general aviation aircraft thru loads the aircraft are not subject to normally, Was the aircraft rated for aerobatic maneuvers??

received my private ticket on 10/29/1977 and used rental planes for fun and practice. Then on 9/29/1978, I bought a 1966 PA28-160C. I used that plane to go to Ohio to visit friends, fly to Orlando to visit my brother, Orange beach to go fishing, to various Auburn football games, I didn't just burn gas, I used my plane to go places, it was more fun than the law allows. Then I got married, no one told me you couldn't have a wife and an airplane. I had to sell the airplane and several years later heart problems and hearing made passing a physical doubtful. Now with a Sport Pilot License, I am able to fly again, and the fact that I am no longer married eliminates that situation, so I am off again to the friendly skies.

+Gary Veduccio - Not to be the contrarian voice, but one of my first passengers (1970's) seemed somewhat shocked, when I began going over the pre-start, and said (I'll never forget this) "Don't you already know this stuff?" It took a while to explain not only that EVERY good pilot goes over this, but to show him each of the elements in the list, what they were for, and what I was doing in the cockpit as a result. Flying is all about education and patience.

Great video! Reminds me of when I and my ex took a friend of hers for a spin, 15 years ago. She was terrified of flying and we meant to show her there was nothing to fear. And it worked one hunnert percent :) She sat up front with me, and I explained to her every single thing I was doing, and why, from the moment she sat down in the plane (it was a Piper Warrior as well, mind you). It went from her warning us before take-off: "Don't you guys panic if I start screaming"- to her almost being bored to death when I warned her, some 40 minutes into the flight, that we were probably about to experience some light turbulence. As I said: worked as a charm :)

Great video. Nice job!! I remember about 30 years ago, taking my girlfriend's mom flying. It was her first time flying period. My girlfriend was in the back, her mom up front. I took her around Little Rock & the Dam not to far. Let her take control until she look over to me & saw I didn't have my hands on the yoke, she wouldn't let go until I grab the yoke. I showed her that the airplane can fly by itself. I trimmed it & used the rudder with very slight push. I used center console trim to keep it from dropping. Needless to say, when we landed, she was ready to go up again anytime.. Safe Flying!!

This was very helpful to me since I so rarely introduce new people to flight and I plan to take a couple on a ride around Lake Tahoe next week. I could watch the expression on the passenger's face in your video to see how she was reacting. This is something I cannot do in real life, particularly since I tend to seat non-pilots in the last row of seats in my aircraft. One thing to note: If the ammeter is "going crazy" during run-up, that means the alternator is probably going to fail on you within the next 100 hours.

Also, someone mentioned about the no flap takeoff, I have a 69 Cherokee 140 and do the same as you. It was explained to me that with even one notch of flaps it adds more drag on the takeoff roll unnecessarily. I have a friend that even on short field or soft field, he starts his take off roll and at around 30mph (our planes aren't in kts) he applies one notch of flaps and finds it takes off with less roll. Just a thought, not sure if he's right, but it's worked for me pretty well. I see you're on Share aviation! It's a great site and a great reference for pilots!! Blue Skies!

+Ryan Villetard Thanks for the backup on that one. It's just what I was taught as well. I've always wondered why we don't perform short-field take-offs with the flaps up for the entire roll and only pop them down at the last second before rotation. Go ShareAviation!

Hey man, great video and great editing. I'm sure you've probably heard this before but for nice clean audio of the radios try using the nflightcam aircraft audio cable for GoPros. It works great, sounds great and is easy to use. I usually plug mine into the rear audio port and into the GoPro above my head like you have it mounted. Some have said they don't like it that way cause it is hard to edit after with multiple cameras, but depending on your editing program, most will let you separate the audio from the video, then you can just run it as a track for the whole video and swap between cameras easily.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Ryan Villetard Thank for the tip. I have made my own audio cable since this video, since I'm an electrical engineer. The worst part of the audio for me is the poor quality I see in most videos, so I only record with an iPhone 5s at 192Kbps. Editing is no problem as well, since I use Adobe After Effects for everything, which is just about as overkill as you can go.

Hi... I think you will find for short field take off.. two stages of flap is specified ( approx 25 degrees ) and for normal operations a single stage is set ( approx 10 degrees ) thus providing the best lift drag ratio. Perhaps a quick check of the flight manual for the particular aircraft you are operating will provide detailed requirements.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Ronny Ronnylater You're definitely correct about the 25deg for shortfield, and I wouldn't be surprised if 10deg was mentioned in the POH too, but in this case, I always default to my training, which was in the same warrior I fly today. I just haven't heard of or seen any other Piper pilots put in the flaps for takeoff, even if it is the correct thing to do. I'll ask my instructor next time I'm chatting with him and see what he has to say and report back. Thanks for the comments, and safe flying!

+Ronald Dreimanis I've been really lucky on that front. I pretty much don't take anyone with a history of airsickness flying, though. It sounds mean, but I am obsessive enough as it is about the cleanliness of my airplane.

I've heard so many stories about the Worcester Airport that once was. There is still so much gossip and politics in town about what caused its demise. Now we're back to supporting four fully loaded flights a day to Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale on JetBlue, but I'm not sure I would call that thriving. The airport is about to dump $15MM+ into upgrading the airport's ILS system, so maybe that will help. If you have any more stories about the airport, I'd certainly love to hear!

I've got just over 1200 hrs., + instrument, I haven't flown for 8 years due to medical. I really enjoy the vids. I soloed in a tomahawk, and probably have at least 400 in low wing Warriors, Cherokees. Like you I learned in a controlled environment at CAK. What fun aviation is, my last flight was in an old friend, a 1953 C-35 Bonanza, something about crossing the fence at 100 gets you something that I miss dearly. Keep taking me there and I'll keep watching, great job. Nice little Warrior. Gotta love the Indians!

Another tip with the Garmin. I know this may be an expensive tip but if you add a Garmin transponder to your panel you can expand the capabilities of your 430.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Scot Cowie No kidding that would be expensive, but we will all have to go ADS-B in a couple of years anyway. What features would that add to the 430, if you don't mind me asking?
@scotcowie9800
@scotcowie9800 8 лет назад
+Friendly Skies Film . Mainly traffic advisories. The next question is what type of 430 do you have. 430, 430A, or 430W
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
Interesting. WAAS.
@scotcowie9800
@scotcowie9800 8 лет назад
+Friendly Skies Film with a GDL 88, I think that correct, you can transmit ADS-B out and get weather in as well as traffic TIS-A. Also I encourage you to research the types of approaches you could use to get yourself back down in case of IIMC. The Garmin 430W allows you to fly a LPV approach which in an IIMC condition will get you down to 200 feet AGL.

You called it! Upgraded 160hp. I love the way she climbs too, having done most of my training in a Cherokee 140. Just those 10hp can really give you an extra feeling of safety on upwind. My husband is scared of flying. It was hard enough getting him to concede to me taking lessons... don't think I'll ever be able to get him to go up with me once I get my ticket. If I do, though, I'll definitely use some of your techniques. You were very calming and did a great job keeping your passenger occupied and at ease. I'm learning out of KBED, btw. So it was a nice surprise to see this video is local! Cheers!

+Sky Alive Hey local friend! Thanks for letting me know what you think. You're too kind. I've actually never been to KBED because you guys have the same expensive FBO we do at ORH, and I try to keep my costs low. Is there another FBO there that I can just part at for the day and head into Boston or eat near the airport?

@skyalive1985 8 лет назад

Hi.... just rather curios about the flapless take-off ?? Rather than the norm of a single stage. I like to run through all stages of flap then return to stage one for take off
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Ronny Ronnylater I run through the flaps after getting in the airplane, but I have never had an instructor say to start on one notch of flaps unless performing a short or soft field takeoff. It adds more one more thing to worry about on climbout. I'm not saying that doing it is wrong. I think it's even mentioned in the POH, but I've never been told to do one notch for anything. I'm not crazy, right?
@Bizija123
@Bizija123 8 лет назад
excellent video and the girl is so cute and easygoing! Like her style. :-) In any case, aren't you supposed to fly in 500 ft. increments with VFR? You leveled at 3K. in the vid.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+Bizija123 The official rule from the FARs is " VFR in level cruising flight more than 3,000 feet above the surface shall maintain..." and since most of Central Massachusetts is around 500ft MSL, then I personally consider the odd/even altitudes to kick in at 3,500. Good clarifying question!! Thanks for asking.

Hey man great video, what about those dudes yakking away on the frequency just after you touched down. Just wondering if you have flown the equivalent in a cessna and what the differences are in the way they fly ? Thank you.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
+silo granz Yeah, it's a nice little airport where everybody always seems to know each other, which is especially nice when you're there to eat in the diner. I have flown a 172 a bit, and have to say that I prefer the Piper, but that's all a matter of preference really. I found that the Cessna did really drop out of the sky on approach where a Cherokee, but especially a Warrior would have floated because of ground effect. That's the biggest difference in how they fly, but I really just like the design of the Warrior a lot more. It feels more like "a real airplane" to have the wing under you, or so my passengers say. Then there are lots of little technical and maintenance related things that I like more, but I'll only go into those if you ask for more information.
@spiro5327
@spiro5327 8 лет назад
OK, thanks for the feedback. I am considering beginning training for my PPL next year and the schools at my local airport mostly use Pipers from what i have seen
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 лет назад
Good on them, but you didn't hear that from me ;) I definitely prefer the Warrior to the Cherokee too if you have a choice, but the Cherokee is a great trainer because of its more docile handing in maneuvers. The only thing I found that detracts from the Cherokee other than its speed and appearance is their tendency to drop out of the sky abruptly when you are floating along in ground effect. They just suddenly decide that they're done flying. I think it has something to do with the wing shape. It won't bother you until you're on your first solo.... I can say from experience... If you have any other questions as you get ready for the biggest adventure of your lifetime, feel free to get in touch!
