Stankdog is one of the only guys in the world that is still qualifying for AMA Pro Motocross Nationals on a 125 2-stroke. In this clip from the 3 hour podcast, Jase asks Stankdog for the secrets of riding a 2-stroke 125cc Dirtbike as fast as he does! Some of the advice might sound crazy, but it is hard to argue with the lord of the 2-stroke!
//
Gared Steinke races f*cking dirtbikes... 2-Stroke dirt bikes to be exact. He is a cult figure in motocross and one of the most universally loved guys on two wheels. I have always wanted to have Gared on the podcast and I am pumped we were able to make it happen. If you don't want to rip a 125 after listening to this podcast we can't be friends.

125s are coming back because a 16 year old kid can't justify sinking one and a half times the cost on a 4 stroke 250. A 2021 YZ125 can be had for like $6000 USD, brand new. A 250F is almost $8500 USD - and that's fucking insane. Then - when something goes wrong; they're completely fucked. That's the problem. That's why 2 Strokes are coming back. I understand why EFI is coming to 2 Strokes due to regulations, but simply put - no kid wants a 4 stroke bike because when it breaks - they either can't fix it themselves, or can't afford to pay someone to fix it. That is literally killing our sport. Your average kid is riding around on a clapped out 10+ year old 125 they can work on or a 250F with dubious service records. High costs of entry are strangling the youth of today out of the sport, because you basically have to be moto royalty to get anywhere. No disrespect intended at all - but do you think Haiden Deegan would be anywhere even close to where he is today if his dad wasn't Brian Deegan? Or would he be another kid ripping around on a 2007 YZ125 at his local track with zero fame? He has an immense amount of talent - but without parents willing to sink six figures into your moto career - you're not likely to go anywhere. We need a true; honest to god - certified; "sportsmans" Stock 125 Class. Get people in the door - pay a good purse for the A / Pro class; and get kids racing

True. Moto has become like Nascar and F1. You can get a ride if you can bring a sponsor.... Deegans Dad has that pull. The kid is good, but if they lived in a trailer park running 2003 bikes....not going anywhere.

I always told people it's easy to sound fast and "look" fast on a 125 but actually going fast is reserved for the elites. There's something really special about 125s over 250s imo, an underpowered yet feather light full size bike with minimal gyro compared to a 450 for example.. It almost feels like riding a motorized bmx bike sometimes 😅

What ever advise someone gives, its all about keeping momentum up. Shift to soon lose momentum, rev it too high lose momentum. Stay out of the soft stuff on berms (i.e. stay low). Find the straightest line. A lot of times I found it fastest to use the first foot or so of berm to help change my direction and miss the apex then maybe use the exit of the berm to finish changing directions if you have to. Don't stuff corners like tomac and j-mart Line selection is about the most important thing on 125.

Maybe my gearing is different but I'm always in 2nd in the corners. 2nd-5th. 1st is useless. I don't have any problem keeping the revs up in 2nd so I feel like that advice is dependent on what track you're on. I only use 1st if I'm trail riding

The motorcycle manufacturers need to make bike piston an cyclnders last a little longer for the cycle of rebuilds schedule...if the bikes didnt require rebuilding so awsum we could enjoy ripping up tires more...my 4 stroke XL class let me ride 60 to 70s hours a week u know how many 78 RM 80s i would have used up to ride the same amount of hours on a 2 stroke..i think it would be smart if the moticross bike company made a play bike that was raceable for beginners an then made the race model for intermediates an pros then they could just leave those 2 pro class 4 strokes alone an put a weaker engine in the standard model Yzf that doesnt need to be rebuilt at all till 2 or 3 years of heavy riding an racing get on it..then taller peeps would have a less vicous cost effecient bike to do all...an start racing on till tjey get serious...i still like the 125 cc 2 stroke idea of ping...in go kart racing they have the air cooled K100 an k80cc 2 stroke class which is much more affordable my tag rotax engine is 3000grand plus the kart is 10000 gs s without the motor....its 100 percent italian made

U know i saw stank dawg damon bradshaw an ronnie mac riding together an damon bradshaw showed stank a lot of respect...so i stopped wonder who the bleep he was im not friends with Damon but i have met him..an suggested fir supercross he try riding a CR 250R 2 stroke instead of a yamaha YZ because in 1996 the YZ was more for outdoors..an he actually switched..an went to europe on his honda with my friend paul as his mechanic...i worked for the same race team as paul....an i walked up looking fir damon an paul was sitting doing nothing..an i said u wrenching for damon..nope next time i saw bradshaw paul was his mechanic...hes is probably the best mechanic you will ever meet..an he races pro. too...

Back in the day 70s pros would run 45 minute motos...well the air cooled RMs only ran good for 25 or 30minutes an most local experts wete wore out by then an had no stamina to make the 45minutes still riding there best...nowwe have watered cooled bikes factory race quality 4 strokes yeah kids are getting in shape may be not all...but its asking the aversge rider to jump into the novice 250cc 4 stroke class on real pro race bike giving an option an a little more experience say 2 stroke school boy class thst has a good ring too it sounds perfect....peace yall

@MotoRevelations
@MotoRevelations 2 года назад
@@glazedandconfused4756 because it's on the power instead of bogging down in second. He was clearly talking about tight/inside corners more than anything

@@MotoRevelations I realized afterwards he does arenacross and is probably talking about that. If you're in 1st gear anywhere on an outdoor track you're doing something wrong, even the inside corners you can be in the power in 2nd gear

Something i learn in 1978 on my first bike the XL...i put chein shin paddle knobby onit ...it hooked up...also the knobs went all the around rim lip to rim lip....i could lay it over an it still stuck where ever i put it...but 2 stroke suffer one fatal flaw tjey notoriosly dont hook up good...and thats becsuse they dont make them so they have some low end pop...i had a 1986 CR 250R the only true factoryworks bike honda sold to the public out of neccesity..it pops real low warns u then tears out from under u like a good works bike should...kind of excactly how a modern 450 comes on then just keeps pulling..the difference between a 4 stroke hooking all the time was the rpm power delivery off idle it just turns slow enuf so it doesnt not dig in an then it keeps pulling...pulling a holeshot on a 4 stroke without the fork lock down is stupid u cant lean far enuf forward to break traction...it hooks terra firma so perfect...i was so jealous after riding a new CRF 450 modern...day bike remembering how hard i worked to get some grip off the gate...now theres too much WTF.

I love how he points out guys over revving the fuck out of 125's. Yes they need to rev, but I've seen videos of guys that definitely know how to ride doing just what he's saying.... staying in one gear waaaaay too fuckin long. Unless you click up a gear it will eventually stop pulling. You can't stay in one gear forever. Use the fucking gearbox as he said.
