I bought my brand new Bronco on February 22, 1975. I paid $6,000.00 for it, (an ENOURMOUS sum of money for a "utility" truck in those days.) Mine had the twin fuel tanks, (like the one driven in this video.) You had to have it, otherwise a single-tank Bronco held about 11 1/2 gallons, and the 302 V8 wasn't the most economical engine back then! Even with the extra tank, you had about 19 gallons total. Mine had Posi-traction in the back, and limited slip in the front. One thing that wasn't pointed out here was that the Bronco had extremely limited front and rear overhang, which made these things go in and out of EXTREMELY v-shaped ditches and not get hung up, (I know this for a fact. . .,) and could go through damn-near anything! And yes, I "cut" mine, and put large tires on it. On the down side, they had drum brakes all the way around. I actually towed an 18 foot travel-trailer back then, (no weight-distributing hitch, just a ball hitch,) and had some extremely harrowing experiences trying to get all this stopped. . .!! 😲😬 And rust?? Oh, yeah!! I had even had mine "Ziebarted," (for those old enough to remember that crap,) and found later all it did was accelerate the rust by blocking off drain holes. Towards the end, my driver's door would drop down about 1/2 an inch when you opened it, and you could see the road through what was left of the floor pans!! Had I then, after about 10 years of ownership, had any inkling of what it would be worth now, I would have NEVER got rid of it, but while I had it, I went through awful mud & sand on trail-rides with a four-wheel drive club in the Midwest, and had a ball with it! Wish I had it today!!!

It's truly a good dependable rig I have a 68 that was used as a mountain vehicle took her hunting every year. rear fenders are cut because chains would hit the rear fenders if not (no lift kit). as you said it does have some rust (both floor panels have got rust, mainly the driver side and some rust in the back on the bed ). It still has the original 289 in it runs great I honestly never had a breakdown in this one that didn't get me home.it's lasted for years and still runs n drives great the transmission was swapped to a 3 speed on the floor rather than the three on the tree (without the swap they liked popping out of second gear and reverse). It's definitely a small vehicle which gives you the capability of weaving in and out of the trees and taking a lot of different paths that a lot of vehicles especially nowadays they're incapable of. Definitely have to agree with you they're not fun to use at high speeds they're made for the mountains and that's where they shine like chrome. I come from a hunting family in Montana where we've gone through three others besides this one and the only breakdown on any of them that didn't get us home was one of them the axle in the rear actually broke and the tire and Axle came sliding out driving on three wheels it dropped down but kept on driving (still unsafe so we had it towed back to town). Overall love the vehicle!

I honestly can't afford to restore or I would! If I was to take the topper off it would look just like the one you have a little bit more of a sky blue (maybe kind of turquoise) and the original rims on mine were white with small Chrome hub caps!

I love early Broncos but having A LOT of wealth should be the only tip to buying one. Unless you like massive projects. I'm building a '68 from a bare frame with a fiberglass tub.

I drive my 1974 Bronco several times a week. I plow snow, pull trailers, haul parts from the wrecking yard..... Dad bought it used around 1984, didn't pay much. We made minor alterations, front and rear sway bars,adjustable brake proportioning valve, dual exhaust, aluminum 4bbl intake, interior panels, air conditioning, new paint.... All things done in stages, it did make it drive better.

IT'S an "original" Bronco.... That is all you need... They ride and drive exactly like the rest of the 60's and 70s vehicles... They are best for going 4 wheeling / off road... I grew up with them... My family had a Ford dealership in the 60's -80's and we used one as a service vehicle and used it to plow snow... They are a blast, plain and simple...

My neighborhood Ford dealership used one only for snow plowing, Sunset Ford in St.Louis County. The Bronco was beautiful, the service dept let me look it over whenever I needed a reference for restoring my 1974 Bronco, 302, automatic transmission, power steering.

@@craighansen7594 OURS was an original 66, 6cyl 3 on the tree... We had jumper cables on a switch under the hood, a blade on the front in the winter, and had a "Mini Tow" (a winch and sling trailer) that we used to get broke down cars... It was a trip with the low power small 6 towing a 60's or 70's full size car or truck, especially in the rain with the vacuum wipers... They slow or stop as you run through the gears... Good times...

I had one with the 6 and 3 speed. Great farm vehicle. That all changed when I put a 351 and 5 speed in it.

The Gen 1's did stellar work on the farm. Getting through the sand, rows, hills and pastures with that short base was near perfection. Especially handy with the little half-bed on the back. Now would I have taken it out on the interstate and bury the accelerator? NFW. Though for its day, it did accomplish what it was designed to do..

Agreed sir. Although I wouldn’t call it a cult following, yet more of one last dash at nostalgic Americana. Even the 5th Gen 92-96s are gaining traction among collectors. My ultimate fave has to be the 2nd Gen 78-79 though, with an old-school built 351c or 460 swap.

As for why the bronco is popular. Convertible, simple mechanical machine, and functional. No bells and whistles, Which I feel is it's best atribute. Society has ruined the idea of an automobile that connects you to the vehicle and can captivate a person without having the umbrella of safety and useless driver gadgets. I think old vehicles have something new doesn't and if one doesn't understand; just get behind the wheel and experience it yourself.

I own a '66 and a '68. The '66 is uncut and will eventually be my wife's rig and the '68 is our wheeler. Wish I would have bought more Broncos before the prices started climbing!

First thing should've been discussed before they filmed the dude drivin that rig is where the hell the rollbar was, and why is it it not in the Bronco....I've got a 74 Bronco, full cage roll bar, 2 pre-1970 Jeeps, both have full cage roll bars, that dude's crazy for drivin the Bronco without one....

I think this is the only convertible SUV I've seen that actually makes sense. The Murano cross cabriolet and the Evoque convertible look like "barbie cars" in comparison.

I live in IL and the rust monster has eaten all the old cars and trucks. I rarely see a first gen or any Broncos at car shows let alone on the roads. I could buy a new car that costs 40-70k and drive it in the salt and watch it depreciate to nothing over time or drive a vehicle everyday that is worthy of salt. I'm a car guy and my 73 Bronco is bad azz. All the things Sam stated in his video about ride, braking, safety, rollover and handling can be addressed in the aftermarket part houses . Collectors talk about original which I guess would matter if there were high performance variations and yea, there are some low production ones. You can group the Bronco into 3 variations: Uncut, Uncut & lifted, and my favorite- Cut & lifted The first gen Bronco is worth about what a new car costs but here's the magic...they don't depreciate where a new car loses 50% value in 3 years. They say for a relationship to be healthy, you need to be fun.......are you? My recommendation is to buy them done....the money to buy a restoration project is your down payment and a monthly payment is budget friendly and your fun starts right away!

Strange to hear a kid try to describe an old vehicle. "It doesn't stop very well, it doesn't drive very well" etc. The old stuff drove great, and they stopped just fine. They just didn't drive themselves like this modern junk. At one time, we actually had to be able to drive on our own, without a computer doing it for us.

I think that's on the average. I tried trading with Mr Oliver Watkins , my first investment of $500 was with fear but it gave me a profit of about $5300 in a few days!! Last week I made profit of $9620. Trading with Mr Oliver Watkins made more profit for me that other professionals I traded with in the past

The only relevant comparison for a 60s Bronco would be: Jeep, IH Scout, Land rover Series 2. Cant compare any of them to a modern SUV

I had a 72. The two issues were the result of my ignorance. First, it had only one gas tank which gave you just over a hundred miles on a tank. Second, the dealer installed an aftermarket air conditioner which was likely made for pickup truck. Never got very cool. Otherwise it was an ok vehicle but a Jeep Wrangler had a much better four wheel drive.

Wow Invest in simple rugged, Yes rusty, engineering. The bronco will get you and your gear in to places most Jeeps will go and you will have space for lunch, dinner tent and sleeping bags.

It's a Bronco. The reason the price is so damn high is idiots that dont want yo do anything but look at them have bid the prices into orbit. Mostly by adding unnecessary glitz to a very common man ride. Get one and drive it or leave them for those that want to appreciate what they are

I'm waiting for the bubble to burst after the new 2021 bronco hype dies down before I buy a first gen bronco. These first gen broncos are simply overpriced right now and this guy has the wrong guess. Prices of these jumped when they announced the new bronco was going to be made, and the prices will come back down when the hype for the new bronco dies down.
