Queen Elizabeth II may have visited the mansion, but that's a photo of her mother, Queen (consort) Elizabeth. Other than that, highly enjoyable and informative video.
It's a great house, overall good video & a great history, but many of those first 'housekeeping staff' were not willing. How hard is it to acknowledge that in the 21C? Virginia has grown & moved on. Just a bit on the nose to lump all the staff together like this.
I’ve lived in Virginia for 6 years. I didn’t have a chance to see everything. Monticello no. Mt Vernon yes. In Richmond just drove thru Interstate 95 and attended boarding school in Washington is all about.
Two and a half minutes of introduction to a five-minute production. Enslaved people called "nannies, maids, and cooks". Bob McDonnell and his wife pretending to love each other when they later testified in court that they weren't even on speaking terms while they lived in the Governor's Mansion. What is this show?
This kinda made me sick. To see 21st century slaves. These people have no idea what they sound like. It still looks like it's 1861 there. They passed down the butler job like it was to be cherished.
Sorry you got sick Robert, but if you actually stepped into reality for a bit, you will realize that there is no one at the Mansion there today, that had slaves or condone them. We should learn from history but not hold others who had no part of events responsible for them. Your calling them slaves is condescending to the employees and is certainly on the edge of racism. I am sure that the people that work at the Mansion today are proud of the work they do and recognized for that work. I would also guess that they are free to leave if they desire. Robert, you need to understand the difference between history and today's reality.
RobertPowell3 What the hell are you talking about?? Modern day butlers are highly trained, highly efficient certified professionals who take great pride in their work. They’re the absolute height of the service industry and they’re compensated well. What a sinister form of deep-seated racism that you see slavery here. We don’t need any white saviors.
I'm a white man, from Central Virginia. But i had the exact same thought as soon as I saw the three black servants setting the table in the intro. I wish I could say things were getting better, but racism and stupidity, sadly, seem to be making a disturbing comeback.
Why all the racism questions? Reading into what you see on the video is ridiculous. Robert Powell is sickened by a black man with what is no doubt a fantastic job? Why? If there is any racism involved, I’d venture to say it starts with Mr Powell.
