/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Central America. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around Central and South America. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful Latin America truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

I spent the summer of 1967 with a Costa Rican family on a high school exchange program. In 1971, I did a college semester in CR, and my wife did the same in 1972. On my last trip, 1972-73, I drove to San José from the Chicago area. So this June, after about 50 years, and the amazing growth of eco-tourism, we are returning to CR. It’s pretty clear that it won’t be the Costa Rica of our memories or photos. Back then, for example, the beaches at Manuel Antonio were free to enter and pretty empty, and you could just pitch a tent in the sand. Still, I'm glad that tourist money helps pay to preserve so much of the wildness and beauty of the country. Thanks for your videos!

You're right about the culture. Costa Rica was one of Spain's least important colonies in terms of population and wealth. It was the farthest from Guatemala, which was the colonial capital, and it had a very small indegenous population which was almost entirely wiped-out by the disease brought by the Spaniards. So you could say Costa Rica was the most forsaken colony and the poorest one in every way. After our independence in 1821 the country started to slowly develop and its turning point came with coffee. The export of coffee was the country's first relevant economic activity and it allowed for the country to finally develop towards the end of the 1800's. That's why we do not have any relevant colonial architecture nor much traditional culture, especially when compared to other countries with huge cultural heritage such as Peru, Ecuador, Mexico and Guatemala, which were home to the Aztec, Maya and Inca empires and were later the epicenters of Spanish colonizaiton. That being said, we definitely have plenty of culture but you won't find it touristy places like La Fortuna and Santa Teresa. You can go to Nicoya, Heredia, Cartago, Limón, and visit museums in San José where you can learn about our history, like the Gold Museum, the Jade Museum and the National Museum.

As a 21 year resident, I am glad to see you are seeing the Costa Rica that even I haven't not seen. I love seeing modern day hippies, brings back fond memories of the 60's and 70's. I was at Woodstock, you guys weren't even thought of, your parents less. You should take a couple of days and venture into San Jose. You're paying a price because you're tourists. This is where CR makes some money, especially the people along the road......road rats...

As a Costa Rican i can confirm everything they said about my country, it is more expensive in general than the rest of latin america, it doesn't mean you can't travel on a budget, there are a lot of hostels, sodas (cheap restaurants), free things 2 do, all the beaches are public and free, etc. Costa Rica it's not a very cultural country, if you expect to see colonial buildings, sorry this is not the place. But if you love nature, outdoors, animals, sun, rain, fresh air, ecotourism, hiking, surfing, meeting cool people from around the world, WELCOME TO COSTA RICA!!!PURA VIDA

I was there for 3 wks in march. Crowds were much less. Definitely now crowds because of spring break. City of san jose has more older buildings. I did to find less historical footprints. Very expensive but even then i will be back. I stayed in airbnbs, and hotels. I was also there 10yrs ago. So Ive been able to see different aspects of it. Would even consider living there but darn its expensive. And I'm from NYC. So that should tell you...its expensive lol

Nice video! Sarah, your comment about Costa Rica not being as "culturally dense" as other countries is spot on. I don't mean it in a negative way. The reality is that when the Spanish conquistadores arrived, there wasn't much of a native population, mostly spread out in inaccessible, dense jungles. This is basically the reason why local native culture is not so easy to come by. And about the cost of living, it sky-rockets at tourist areas. Its supply and demand, it has to do with Costa Rica being such a popular tourist destination. There are lots of places in Costa Rica where the cost of living is reasonable. Enjoy your stay!

Beautiful videos of Costa Rica. Sure is "un poquito" expensive but well worth. People from Latin America comes to our Florida #1 attraction: Disney, no complaints, entrance to " any" place there , is very ,very expensive and many Latin people spends their yrs savings in one week, just to have fun and enjoy Disney & Cape Canaveral/NASA , never mind the 100s of people at lines, yet it's well worth. I visit Costa Rica every yr , we stay on the other Costa Rica (on the rural gorgeous mountain side at Turrialba) , our " headquarters ", from there we travel to both pacific and Caribbean coast. We get to see many indigenous people coming out of their habitat (mountains, jungle ,rivers , villages) to the town of Turrialba to get food and to get their $ money/ Government little help once a month or so. Hopefully few more yrs and we will call Costa Rica "home ". God bless! Keep posting your beautiful videos. God bless that beautiful country of Costa Rica. 🇨🇷

Me and my family of 5 spent 10 days in Uvita some years back and we loved it. It is a tropical paradise. I did want to pass on some tips. In Uvita, the jungle merges into the ocean. We saw Sloths in the wild everyday in the trees at the beach we went to. We had Howler Monkey's and Spider Monkeys at our house virtually every evening. Daily sights included Toucans and parakeets. All of this was free for us. No fee to park, and the waterfall there in Uvita was $2 per person. It is 35 foot tall and you can slide down it. We also rented an SUV through Adobe which was a fraction of the cost of the other name brands. Our experience is if you go to very popular places you will pay the tourist prices but if you get out and discover the country, it can be very affordable.

As a local, I can tell you there is old prehispanic engineering such as Guayabo National Park (entrance $10) and colonial architecture like Basilica de los Angeles (free), Gothic architecture like Coronado Church (free) and you can visit also visit Capilla en las Nubes (1-night stay with local food for about $60, need intermediate hiking), and the richest national food is from the Caribbean so you have to visit Manzanillo or Punta Uvita. Also, there are private natural reserves with no tourist lines but that is a long list and maybe $40 to $60 with lunch or adventure activities included. Maybe for the next trip :)

As a long time expat in Costa Rica, I have to say what you referred to as not being "scammed" to pay $10 to park on the street, was technically a scam. Locals either don't pay or very little. I use scammed because you mentioned it. I like to think of it as supporting the local economy. But be aware.Taking advantage of tourists in such a minor way is almost not worth mentioning but I've seen abuse. I recently saw $20 being paid to park on the street in Tamarindo. I parked next to that car and paid mil colon, just over $1. Just because. Rental cars are a target for sure. Just think about it as helping the economy. And, yes, costa rica is very expensive. Just come prepared.

Just came back from Costa Rica about a month ago. While I had a good time and enjoyed the country, not sure if I would go back. To give some context, I've traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico. And CR is definitely the most expensive, easily 3x more than Peru. While CR is beautiful, it is full of gringos, almost cliche in a way, long lines everywhere. I would rather go back to Peru or Honduras. Peru's Sacred Valley is just as beautiful to all the cloud valleys stuff and Honduras islands have much more beautiful beaches. This is just my personal opinion, everyone will be different.

I'm Costa Rican and I absolutely agree about the perceived lack of culture. There is culture, we just have never invested in it. You can go to Ecuador or Nicaragua and get almost the same natural landscapes and access great cultures and gastronomies. The food we sell to tourists is shamefully bland, despite we have great foods that we just don't care for marketing. And we really don't care about our indigenous territories, there's a lot of ecotourism there but not even Costa Ricans know it.

I lived in Costa Rica as a local and those ants are actually pests that destroy home gardens. In just one night they will wipe out your entire flower beds. Yes, tourist areas are lovely but very expensive and if the tourist feel the pinch, imagine the locals with much lower income. Most locals can't visit beautiful places in their country because it's so darn expensive. It's actually more affordable to travel abroad to vacation for a few days than visit locally. Just saying it like it is!

Yeah we’ve been wondering about that. It must be hard for locals to afford many things if minimum wage doesn’t reflect the influx in tourism prices. Thanks for sharing.

You should come to Bocas del Toro, Panama, more wildlife, a lot less people and it is much cheaper than CR. Y'all are so close, you will not regret it. Get in touch.

@@EricandSarah Oh my goodness, Bocas is the Bom! Everyone thinks it is just a little town, but the wildlife in the National Parks and Highland to Island habitats, make it one of the most diverse places on the planet.

You won't experience CR as it should be if you only go to tourist attractions or touristy places, those are catered to the US population, mostly as they are the most common foreigner that visits here... The biggest income for the country besides the services industry is tourism so the places you went to are catered to you, the tourist... That is not the real CR. To see the culture and the history you need to leave the beachside and go into the capital, the main cities of each province, museums, theaters, etc... That will give you a better glance at our culture and history. You go to the beach and mountains to live the tourist experience, if you want to see our culture and see the country's history, you gotta go to the cities. If you want to experience the more native side of the country, visit the indigenous reservations. That's the beauty of CR, so small but with so many sides.

I personally didn't like it.. it was me. I would give it a try again but it was way overpriced, the beaches were dirty & I would never recommend monte verde to anyone.. if u do absolutely never go to selina there.. the hanging bridges, sloth/butterfly were all a scam & they forced u to do a bunch of dumb bs just to get in .. the energy there was super negative.. the sloths seemed to of been taken from the wild.. butterflies in a bug cage essentially.. idk.. la fortuna was pretty but it was just extremely overpriced everywhere
