Well, if you're interested in outdoor museums with re-enactors in character, then Beamish Museum is the one to go for. And they've got a 1930s vintage fish and chip shop. Win win! 😀
@@RollerbazAndCoasterDad Not sure. Be fascinating to see a 50s fish and chip shop as well. In fact, give me a chip shop and I'm happy. Cardioligist less so. Still, he gets paid for it.
Durham Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Europe. Right at the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with the earliest ribbed vault in England and some suggestion that Islamic architects from the middle east were influential in its design. Most importantly, one of the most tranquil indoor spaces you will ever experience, simply an amazing place.
agreed, being local we've been going there every few weeks for 30 years, and there is always something new to see or learn. recently went to a Christmas play of the Christmas carol and a library tour of manuscripts from Bedes era... but mainly for the architecture and quiet peace... tranquil is the word CM
And the Cathedral and Castle are its main assets Charles. I am a native of Durham and have seen it reduced to a shell of its former glory. Thank you Durham County Council
You guys should DEFINITELY visit Northumberland some day. It has more castles (ruins or standing) than the whole of france per square mile, and is rich with history and beautiful places to visit. A little hometown bias from me lol, but i stand by the beauty of Northumberland.
The North East of England generally...is a hidden gem ...all along that historic coast there are interesting and attractive towns and villages waiting to be explored...Durham itself...is welcoming....beautiful..with a magnificent cathedral.....from a Welsh man living in Lancashire
Northumberland Coast is one of the best kept secrets in England. It's wild beauty is completely unmatched I'd say! I am biased, having been born and bred here though!
As an American who lived in Durham for a couple of years ,watching your well produced video brought back memories of this beautiful, old, charming city. You definitely picked out one of the best small cities to visit. Great video production.
I live in Durham and it’s nice to see the City through someone else’s eyes. Since I’m local I can sometimes take the fact that it’s so full of history for granted. Thank you for the reminder at how great it really is xx
We do the same thing down here in London. I know it's huge compared to Durham but we take stuff for granted. I absolutely LOVED my first trip to Durham last September (2022).
I do it as well I mean tomorrow morning I will see the cathedral from a distance and just think I am in Durham not wow like the tourists. It is important to remember the beauty and importance of it all.
I find it so cute that you say “the” in front of things. The Durham Cathedral, The York Minster, when in the UK we don’t. It gives me a warm smile. But then your videos do tend to make me smile. I enjoy your gentle enthusiasm. And I share your love of cathedrals.
Where would you like to see a video from next? Have you seen this video where we spend the day exploring Whitby? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p70kNGqQ0Jw.html
Aw guys, so glad you came to Durham. I was born and raised in Durham, absolutely love the place. When I travel and see the Cathedral on the hill, I know I'm home ❤️
The Venerable Bede is known as the Father of English History, he was one of the early chroniclers of our history. He served in the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow. Monkwearmouth was built by Benedict Biscop in 674, Bede served here from the age of 7. St.Peter’s church which is still standing is all that survives of the monastery that was raided by Vikings. Jarrow was built a few years after Monkwearmouth. The Lindisfarne Gospels which is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book was written by the monks on Holy Island. It spent many years on show at Durham Cathedral but now resides at the British library in London. There has been many petitions to return it to Durham.
Get up to Sunderland! Beaches at Roker, Seaburn and Whitburn are fantastic. Stay in the Seaburn Inn and have a meal in the Stack. Visit Sunderland’s historic churches and take in the Empire and the Fire Engine. Marvellous!
I've watched you visit so many places around the world. I NEVER thought I'd see you walking around my hometown! I felt happy and proud that you liked it. The cathedral is my favourite cathedral in the world although I may be biased.
That view of Durham Cathedral from 0:29 - 0:32 has become one of the most iconic images of the Cathedral thanks to the East Coast Main Line being built. And Durham & Newcastle are fantastic places
My wife went to Durham University and she keeps begging me to visit with her( we live in Essex now, so its a bit of a trek) after watching your vlog I'm sold, so will definitely be visiting Durham soon. Great video as always guys, so glad you're enjoying your 2nd UK trip! 👍
Great video. Glad you enjoyed my home region. The Northumberland coast is very beautiful - amazing beaches and castles (Druridge Bay, Warkworth, Alnmouth, Bamburgh, Ross Back Sands, Holy Island are all fantastic).
take a trip along Weardale taking in the Anglo-Saxon parish church in Escomb, (it dates from the mid to late 7th century), to visit the town of Alston in the Pennines. The views are stunning.
Being from Newcastle and studying in Durham, your last two videos are great! I just moved back to Newcastle after 10+ years in London too, so I'm discovering everything again.
I am from Newcastle and I was lucky enough to do my degree at Durham. We found an amazing student apartment with an amazing view of the Cathedral, by the time we moved in the following year an enormous block of apartments had been built completely blocking our view. Regardless, good times in Durham. If you’re in the North East much longer, head into Northumberland where there are loads of stops, Alnwick, Amble, Seahouses, Bamburgh to name a few, then hop over the border into Scotland if you fancy it.
Thanks for bringing me fond memories of Durham market. I was last there in 1969, when I bought what I took to be a picture postcard in a lovely old frame for a few pence. When I got it back to the college where I was studying Art I dismantled the filthy frame, which looked as though it had spent decades in a small room with a coal fire, and discovered to my surprise and delight that the "postcard" turned out to be an exquisite small oil painting dated 1912 of a Northumbrian hill scene in winter. It still hangs in my home and reminds me of the many happy years spent in County Durham at that time!
So glad you came back to enjoy our beautiful North East, I recommended Tynemouth to you guys in your last Newcastle video I hope it didn't dissapoint its main strength being its beautiful beaches obviously best enjoyed during summer. Both Durham and Tynemouth only about 20 minutes travel from Central Newcastle by Metro/train. So proud you both seem to enjoy our hometown . Hope you guys visit again soon 🙂
I suggest you visit the city of Chester, settled by the Roman's in 79ad. It has a nearly complete, roman wall around it, which you can walk around the whole city on. There is a Roman amphitheatre and, a two level shopping area called the Rows. Chester has a cathedral, a horse race track and a wonderful zoo. I think you would both love it. Chester can be reached by train from London quite easily, it's about 175 miles from London.
My parents live near Tynemouth. Next time you have to go to Riley's Fishshak. It's a restaurant on the beach. Also Allards and Lola Jeans are really good for food too. The lighthouse at the end of your video is St Mary's lighthouse and you can go inside and visit it. There is a stately home close by too called Seaton Delaval Hall. Enjoy! The Northumberland coast is really stunning
I'm sure everyone will say Beamish is the big thing near Durham and we agree. We recently did one of our mini vlogs on the amazing LOCOMOTION museum also nearby. You can ride on an accurate recreation of Stephenson's Rocket there! Also good cake.
My grandparents are from there and the surrounding area. They used to go to church in a Methodist chapel just down the road from the cathedral where my great-great grandfather was a stone mason. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
Where to start? You need to see Tynemouth Priory, Lindisfarne (but don't forget to check the tide-tables!), Bamburgh, Beamish, Wirksworth Castle, the Roman Wall, Alnwick. The North East is packed with fascinating history and beautiful scenery, and the best part is that even most Brits don't know anything about it, so much of it is still quiet and unspoilt.
Thank you for that visit to Durham. I have often passed by on the train and looked over at the cathedral, so it was very interesting to have a look inside. Must visit one day. Your fish and chips looked wonderful.
I love how you are seeing the things that locals take for granted and are blown away. We should all take time to appreciate the great things in our daily lives. You should check out North Wales. There's not so much cool architecture but some amazing natural wonders
Oh I'm so happy you visited Durham!! I've only watched your videos for a few months but I've been dying for you to see Durham! If you ever come back I recommend a tour of the Durham Castle too! Oh btw the main part of the cathedral that you showed at 4:05 is where they filmed a part of Avengers Endgame when Thor goes back to Asgard, where you were stood is where Rocket slapped Thor hahahaha.
When I was doing my MA at Newcastle Uni I did a work placement at Washington Old Hall, just down the road from Durham. One of the Washington family ancestral homes. We used to get a lot of visitors from the USA.
I just live less than a couple of miles from the city centre and i can honestly say that Durham is one of the best cities in the world 🌍 I always compare it to a mini York, very similar, just a beautiful place to be. You must visit the Beamish Museum before you leave the north east. It’s a must and it’s only a few miles away. I’m so happy to see you guys thoroughly enjoy what the north east of England 🏴 has to offer. Dave
My university city! I matriculated and graduated in the cathedral, which is quite the experience. Spent a lot of my near decade in Durham living on the Bailey (the road that runs around the peninsular) so it was lovely and nostalgic seeing it in the video.
Loved your video. I was born in Durham & live 50 mins walk from the Cathedral. Its so true that you have highlighted interesting things in Durham & the Cathedral that locals like me, after endless visits , are still missing. Well done. I got a chance to visit Grand Rapids, Michigan because a family lived in Durham for 1 year as part of a Durham University exchange. P.s. the fish & and chips looked wonderful. Keep up the good work.
I was literally in Durham and Newcastle just over a year ago, it’s a great old cathedral city with its pretty cobbled streets, like Lincoln but with that North Eastern vibe, with the chilly weather and the lovely accents. Also, this is one for 80s new wave fans, Prefab Sprout were born and raised in Durham pretty much. All those legendary 80s tunes, like When Love Breaks Down, Appetite, Bonny, Faron Young, Cars and Girls, King of Rock n Roll.
South Shields beach which you can see from tynemouth beach , there is also Arbeia Roman fort there to explore . There are plenty of hotels and b&b to stay at in South Shields
It's nice you drove along the coast from Tynemouth to Whitley Bay. Me and my family and friends have often walked it at various times of the day on the sand. Fond memories of being a carefree teen!
Please please put north wales to your list and visit the incredible castles there like Conway or Caernarfon castle some of the most beautiful scenery you will see around snowdon, can’t wait to see if you go and watch your video and reaction.
It's so nice to see you in my hometown of Durham! I really hope you enjoy your visit. Not too sure if you had chance to visit Durham Castle, it's only about a 30 second walk from the Cathedral and we offer guided tours if you pre-book. Full of history just like the Cathedral; the Castle is now owned by Durham University but was once home to the Prince Bishop of England who was essentially the 2nd King 'of the North' who even had the power to issue his own currency 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it. Very much my stomping-ground. (I live with in walking distance of both Tynemouth and St Mary's lighthouse). There's plenty more to see in the North-East, so be sure to come back
Good video. I've never been to Durham (where the Pink Panther lives, dur-ham, dur-ham... etc) Funny to see someone having a bad door experience in the background at 3:27 xD
Your son must be smart because the oxford, cambridge and Durham universities are the pinnacle of education in Britain and maybe the world. Those are incredibly prestigious universities.
You went to the right place for Fish and Chips Longsands is excellent. There is also a great place on the beach called Crusoe's. I would also highly recommend Dil and the Bear and Toast. On Sundays in the Metrostation they also have a huge market. Selling everything from fish to books. Records to plants.
Durham is my home city. I've travelled to 30+ countries over 20 years but came home to marry and start a family. I live a 10 minute drive from the market square and spend time in the corner cafe outside the Cathedral... Café Dral it's called. The best view in the county is from a cliff edge at Nose's Point in small town of Seaham, only a short drive from Durham city. There's a famous picnic patch there at height and right by the edge of the sea, though it is much nicer in spring/summer. If you happen to still be in the area, be sure to check out some of our many castles. I'd recommend the 13th century Langley Castle for high tea and a walk across the Roman ruins of Hadrian's Wall. Enjoy your stay in the north. I hope our people have been good to you.
the last few frames of your vid were filmed at Currys Point at St Marys Island (AKA Bait Island) Whitley Bay .Currys Point was a place of execution back in the past. i grew up/played on the beaches in that area
As someone who lives in Durham and has lived hear all my life I think Durham is an amazing place to live and the cathedral and the market place are both hidden gems.
Hi new to the channel I’ve only been to Durham a few times but it’s a lovely place you should go to Middlesbrough and try a chicken parmo classic northern food 🇬🇧
This video just showed up on my home page randomly but have found it really cool! I'm a uni student in Durham and I just found it so cool that you got so excited about things I see every day, just made me re-appreciate the city I live in and the uni I go to! Thanks guys!
Ah so glad you’s visited the north east I’m from Sunderland just 12 miles south of Newcastle. You made good choices to visit but only scratched the surface as you’s said … personally I love the Northumberland coast and castles leading up to the Scotland borders I hope you enjoyed your stay in the north east … and the people gave you a warm welcome x
There are so many places to see and visit, it just means you have to come back to visit our country again! I’ve lived in manchester years (so let me know next time you visit) and grew up near Durham
You should have stopped off at Bede's church (St Paul's) in Jarrow some bits of it go back to the 7th century, very atmospheric. Also, Beamish Open Air Museum is worth a look. Lindisfarne & plenty of serious castles to the north of the river.
Nice to see you visit a place my family and i live near. Durham cathedral is a magical place to visit at Christmas time, the carol service and big Christmas tree is amazing.
Love that you found a good chippy! When you find a good one they really are very good. Never gets old! Tartar sauce on the fish and curry on chips is my fav.
Try a day at Beamish open museum and travel the Northumberland coast line to berwick the coastal route by car. When open try a night at Chillingham castle the most haunted there is. Holy Island is unique in itself and needs a full day... but venture the Northumberland coast line...
Durham and Canterbury Cathedrals are not only my 2 favourite buildings in England they are two of the finest buildings in the World. Pleased you were able to visit.
There's an amazing old guild hall building next door to the market in Durham. You missed that, don't worry I was born there and I've only just discovered it last year. Also the castle 🏰!
Pleased that you got to explore more of the local area! Would suggest trying to go to bamburgh if you get the chance. Massive medieval castle on some beautiful coastline next to an amazing beach 🙂
Glad you enjoyed Tynemouth! I was raised here and live in the area now. Longsands does wonderful fish and chips but there is so much more to the village as well. Definitely worth seeing in the summer for the beautiful beach!
I go back to Durham at least once a year (live in France but from a North East mining family) However I was disappointed that you drove to Tynemouth for fish and chips, when you walked past Bells in Durham Market place which is probably the best fish and chip shop in the UK....I might be slightly biased....When you go back to Durham don't forget to try them and then walk down by the river where you'll get a fantastic view of the cathedral and castle....
You missed the smallest gin bar on the bridge. I think it's smaller than the one you visited in Newcastle. 2 great cities. You need to come back and visit the bad ones!
I’m so glad you got to visit Durham, it’s such a beautiful city (I was born and have lived here my entire life) and it has some amazing tourist attractions. I hope you have enjoyed your time visiting.
Btw the hotel you are staying in is not in Newcastle, its in Gateshead where I live right now and while you are here you got to visit the Angel of the North at the southern part of the town.
Durham has got one of the best universities in England, and my dad used to say that between his two sons, one will go to Durham University & the other to Durham Prison, and he has 50% correct… I’ll let you decide which one came true?! And BTW, really enjoyed both this video & the Newcastle vlog.
