We have finally made it to the capital of Cambodia known as Phnom Penh. This city has a rich history and one that we were keen to explore.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s busy capital, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. It was a hub for both the Khmer Empire and French colonialists, but it has a dark side. In 1975, a guy by the name Pol Pot, a communist, decided to evacuate the whole city and aimed to kill everyone who was linked to the old government or has educated, so basically an Asian Hitler.
He brought these people to a primary school which he converted into a torture centre known as Tuol Sleng, S21 prison. Here, he tortured people to right their confessions of who they knew so Pol Pot could find more people that he believed should be killed.
Our visit to Phnom Penh was not only to understand it's history but also to explore it a little as a first timer in the great city and see what it's like being a tourist in Phnom Penh. We also had a mission of wanting to find Lok Lak to eat and find a boat on which we could take a sunset cruise down the Mekong and Tonle Sap river.

Thank you for making this video to the world. Most people don't understand how Cambodia went through darker history again and again. Khmer Rouge was the worst in the history, they killed all scholars, scientists, professors, teachers, engineers and anyone associated with the west. People just don't understand that Cambodia comes a long way and expected it to well comparing to the neighboring countries. They look down to Cambodians as uneducated, they need to understand the Cambodian histories. You guys show them what happened. Good Job!

Kambhoji or Kambodhi is a popular Raga in Carnatic Music. The scale of Kambhoji is also said to have been derived from Cambodia. The original name of Cambodia is 'Kambhoja' kingdom.

This was my former high school and I had to live through the Pol Pot killing machine. Most of my family members did not survive. Only memory lives on. It's seemed just like yesterday. Enjoy your trip. Peace out from a genocide survivor🎉

That is Mekong River. Tonle Sap is in Siem Reap near Angkor Wat. That Mekong River is wider when flood. Anyway, I love your video.

I visited that prison in 2013. A very sad place. There were many horrendous things that happened to the prisoners there. Some of the guides told me that often after heavy rains in the school grounds human bone fragments and clothing are uncovered and are found on the surface - these are collected up to respect those murdered there. It's incredible how cruel humans can be to each other; and it's no different today in many parts of the world.

You didn’t order fish amok but only lok lak and it’s not local lok lak. Crab amok is the best one and street lok lak is almost everywhere around Cambodia that sell food ( cost $1.5 to $2, even at the boat place or next to the royal palace they sell the best lok lak there. That silly English speaking tuk tuk driver trick you, be careful with scammers and be careful with your belongings. Anyway the blue flag that you ask for the meaning is the king flag. The flag that have lot of colours is the Buddhism flag and the national flag is red stand for the Cambodia people, blue stand for the king and the Angkor Wat temple is stand for the spirit of Cambodia (Khmer).

@@thebuddymoon yes, all of those shop that’s across the street from you, they sell them. It’s a popular food. Just remember not all lok lak is the same. Each restaurant or food place have their own style of cooking and taste. When buying stuff in Cambodia, always negotiate the price what you think it worth. If the price is to much and they won’t drop the price, try walking away and they will call you back to buy their stuff. That’s how you avoid the scammers. Cambodia is a poor country and they like white peoples like you.

This Lok Lak is made for Westerners. The original was made with plateful of lettuce, sliced beef tomato, sliced cucumbers red onion/ green onion top with sauté beef and spicy dipping sauce on the side!

The prison sounds horrifying, and the fact that by killing everyone who was educated set the country back by about 50 years because there were no doctors, teachers or engineers left. The dodgy motorcycle taxi that took you to the expensive restaurant is like the ones in Thailand that insist you visit a silk factory and tailor, no matter how much you insist that you don't need a lime green tuxedo. It was so funny that after travelling around the city looking for specific food it was available in your own hotel. But travel is about adventures.

I've been to Phnom Penh twice and I had to laugh at this video because Lok Lak was my absolute favorite dish in Cambodia! I felt your pain when you couldn't find any! I'm going back in January of 2024 and will be on the search for Lok Lak again! LOL!

I’d say pol pot was more the Mao / Stalin of Cambodia rather than Hitler of Asia (killers of primarily their own population.) though both may have been caused higher numbers of death; pol pot committed genocide on near 1/3rd to half of his country’s population, glad to see they are making a strong rebound from those darker times and wish them prosperity ☺️

Great video, beautiful country and nice people! Is very important for people to see what communist and totalitarian systems are like! Unfortunately, I know these situations are still around. In Cuba where I was born, political prisoners are tortured and mistreated. However, the world doesn't want to look that way, instead many on the left glamourized it!
