Taiwan is, without any doubt, my favorite Asian country. I've been there, believe it or not, 7 times. I love the food, the scenary, and above all the people there - you meet the kindest and sweetest people ON EARTH in Taiwan, and since Taiwan is a wealthy country, you don't have to worry about people trying to cheat you, rob you, or steal from you there. In fact, Taiwan is so safe that, if you forget your phone or wallet, say in a restaurant, it's very likely for you find it untouched or handed over to the owner when you return there. The things I dislike most about Taiwan? The chaotic traffic (especially the motorcycles which drive even on the sidewalks) and the weather - Taiwan gets extremely hot and humid in the summer.

I’m North American and I drove the entire island of Taiwan once (in a standard transmission car that I had long forgotten how to drive). Driving the winding roads on the edges of the southern mountains made me nervous, and the endless tunnels in the east were strange. But driving in Taipei in the north made me shake because the other drivers were continuously honking at me, apparently I wasn’t aggressive enough in my driving style, and the roads were choked with motorcycles that just seemed to wrap around me obscuring the lanes, if in fact there were any lanes.

I love Taiwan. A solo travel blog I followed and usually agreed with back in the day went on a rant about how Taiwan was the most underrated country for tourism, so I amended my Japan trip in 2018 to include 9 nights in Taiwan and it was the best decision of my life. Dumplings are a good start but I hope you go to a night market for dinner one night! BTW, Xiangshan literally means Elephant Mountain, which is why the elephant decal was everywhere on that hike.
@Isaac-Zzyzx
@Isaac-Zzyzx Год назад
Xiangshan->象山,象(Xiang)means elephant and 山(shan)means mountain. If you want to eat dumplings in Taiwan, you can ask a Taiwanese,or eat dumplings made by 八方雲集 or 四海遊龍.

The millet porridge (小米粥) has no seasoning on purpose because some people prefer it sweet and some savory. You can season it as you wish or use it as a base for the dishes you order (similar to how when you go to a Chinese restaurant and order a dish, the white rice would come unseasoned). In my family, we eat it sweet for breakfast, and we would ask the restaurant for brown sugar to add table side. Also, dumplings are usually only served in restaurants/ street food stands that lean towards Northern Chinese cuisines; there are many other styles of cooking in Taiwan (most prominently Southern Min, Hakka, and Japanese) where dumplings are not typically featured.

我看他們的影片兩年了,他們是非常棒的旅遊家,他們的影片也很適合當成教材,歡迎大家訂閱、分享、按讚!👍🥰🙏🙌🎉 I am very happy to see that you have finally came to Taiwan. I hope this first trip made you satisfied and happy! In this episode, you went to old and well-known scenic spots. I hope you have traveled to the south also this time! Taiwan has distinct climates throughout the year, and the climate and geographical environment are very different in the east, west, north, and south. Whether you like modern life or nature, I believe this country can satisfy you! It is really a country that is very suitable for in-depth tourism. It is the condensed whole of Asia, and it also integrates old and new as well as Eastern and Western cultures. My short review is not enough to describe it. Welcome everyone to come and experience it for yourself!

What struck me the most about Taipei and Taiwan in general is how it looks like a mini-Japan. It has very efficient and well connected public transport, fascination for anime, the flashy street advertisements, and the general cleanliness and orderliness. Signages in public places also tell you how far away certain places are, like "Subway 500 meters away." I went there for a week in June 2018 and stayed at the Nangang District. I wish I could come back and visit other parts of Taiwan.

I live in Japan and visited Taipei and Hualien before COVID started. My whole family enjoyed it. Even with a language barrier, I enjoyed trying new foods, although thankfully I don't have any food allergies. Great street food and an interesting mix of cultures. The buildings downtown did seem a bit dirtier than downtown Tokyo. Our hotel windows were caked with dirt, but I'd never seen something like that in Tokyo. Still, Taiwan is a great place and I can't wait to go back.

I was there recently. I noticed virtually all buildings have tiled exterior surfaces that probably never been cleaned of dirt and grime since the buildings were built. If the exteriors were painted instead of tiled, they can more easily be powerwashed or repainted every few years. Alternatively, metal cladding would be better than tiling.

I agree with all the positive comments here.. Taiwan is underrated country in Southeast Asia . I’ve travelled in Taiwan with my family way back in 2012 and I really enjoyed the tourists spots.
@kismetau
@kismetau Год назад
It's actually in North East Asia :)
@hc434
@hc434 Год назад
@@kismetau I think Taiwan is historically more southeast Asian since it's where Filipinos, Indonesians, native Malaysians etc. Can trace their ancestry. It was Austronesian for thousands of years (more similar to the Philippines than any east Asian country) until just about 400 years ago when the Dutch settled it. I mean it's very close to Japanese islands, Filipino islands, and China, so unless there is a definitive geographical reason why it should be East Asian I'd say its historically more southeast Asian
@kismetau
@kismetau Год назад
@@hc434 if we are considering solely location is Hong Kong also considered to be in SE Asia? If we are considering culture and population, the indigenous population of Taiwan compose only 2.5% of the total population but 95% are descended from Chinese migrants hence the dominance of East Asian/ Chinese culture in Taiwan not SE Asian or indigenous. The stereotype these days of an Australian is not an Aboriginal person but a Caucasian one even though for thousands of years before 1800 it was a country of indigenous people. We can't and shouldn't disregard history but we should respect what are official facts that Taiwan today has more in common with NE Asia and is also considered to be in that geographical location.
@hc434
@hc434 Год назад
@@kismetau again, Indonesians, Filipinos, Hawaiians, native Malaysians, even New Zealand aborigines can all trace their ancestry back to Taiwan. So I'd say it's not inaccurate to say Taiwan is in southeast Asia as it's the ancestral birthplace of "southeast Asian" people and Austronesians in general. That's a darn good indicator if you're the actual geographical ORIGIN of most southeast Asians. The closest Filipino island to Taiwan is only 96 miles away and Taiwan is historically more like the Philippines than any other place. It's absolutely not "incorrect" to say it's part of southeast Asia And if you're talking about the dominant culture today, does that make Singapore part of Northeast Asia?
@kismetau
@kismetau Год назад
@@hc434 You're welcome to convince the Taiwanese people (and the rest of the world) that they are actually in SEA. I live here and it's a known fact that many locals sadly look down on SEA people as they are mostly engaged in "basic" jobs such as labourers, helpers to the elderly or cleaners. Have you been to Singapore? If so, you'd be aware that it's made up of a number of cultures: English, Chinese, Indian and Malay which is reflected in their 4 official languages. Their people follow various religions: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam etc. There's no one dominant culture or religion but respect for all. If we placed countries to when we were all connected as one in Pangea, most of Asia eg. Thailand, Indonesia would be in the North East and South East would be Papua New Guinea. Your arguments are based around history but I don't live in the past. I live in the present. Things are not as simplistic as you make them out to be. Cultures and people evolve as do land borders and geographical definitions.

The area around the temple is the oldest part of Taipei. Most Taiwanese don't go there besides going to the temple. Mostly old and poorer people living in the area. That's why most people don't speak English there. On the west side(Old Downtown), most people go to the area around Taipei Main station and Ximending. Nowadays, most Taiwanese go shopping and eat on the East side of Taipei(New downtown... where Taipei 101 is). There are more than 10 malls within the area. One of the most concentrated place in the world; however, most tourist just go to Taipei 101 then leave.

Ok , was wondering about your pronunciation of where you are . Quite a bit of night life there . I stayed just the other side of the main road , Via Hotel , 60 Chongqing St , no hot plate in the room , can have a light breakfast and pot noodles , nice space . Was $45 3 years ago :-) Japanese toilet :-) Great wifi . Am sure you were in some places I found . That 'market ' area does have places to eat , maybe not dumplings :-) Nice going back with you :-) Way more folks at the changing of the guard than when I was there , 3 years ago , got the picture . :-) I see you like walking :-) You are still young :-) Lots to see there , glad you saw the fountains near the temple , quite a place at night . You did say Shilin , that is just up the road , very cool night market . 101 tower is a must , maybe the flower market in Daan on a Saturday morning . Sunday , Tamsui , quite popular easy by MRT , nice by the river , cool sunsets . I got to see a fair bit over there , could not get home till end June :-) You could walk down to the river from where you are staying . The national Museum is epic . Plus the ones in Central . The zoo is cool , might see the pandas :-) HSR is cool if you are in an hurry , regular train works just fine , no wifi in tunnels :-) No HSR on the east coast . Not all speak English , its Taiwan :-) There is a big push for English teachers . The folks are really friendly and helpful , all over the country . You might be too early for the festival in Kaoshiung , lasts about 6 hours , epic . Stayed near the Love River :-) Plenty walking trails , one couple planned to just do that :-) My friends are in Taichung and Tainan , orchid friends . My visit to TOGA was an eye opener , its a suburb :-) Lots of places to get good seafood , , not the place for 'Western Food ' :-) Will be following you , have fun .

I traveled to Taiwan back in the 1980s and 1990s always enjoyed. Took the train from Taipei going north around to the east side of country. Hope you visit Elan and see the sea black sand and the mountains marble rocks.

You should go visit again if possible, because Taiwan has changed drastically (in the right direction) during the last forty years.

Many Filipinos are working in Taiwan in electronics garments and caregiver... taiwanese tourist visits northern part of the Philippines.. i think it's a hundred miles away from the Philippines that's why together with the u.s the Philippines government have an agreement to use the northern part of the Philippines as it's u.s naval base.through EDCA enhance defense cooperation

The app for translation is so cool. The yellow -ish soup is millet porridge and it's healthy soupy dish for breakfast.

You should go to the mountains of Central Taiwan and the modern city of Kaohsiung in the southern Taiwan. Most of the museums are in Kaohsiung and a lot of places to go.

You happened to look for dining in the least westernized district in Taipei. There are lots of nice eateries in other areas of Taipei where people have no trouble communicating in English or other more popular foreign languages like Japanese and Korean.

So great to see one of your videos again! I hadn't seen one in ages. It's weird how the algorithm can be! Anyway, Taiwan looks amazing and quite pretty and clean! Looking forward to seeing more on Taiwan. It's a place where I had considered visiting in the past so this video is sparking my interest. BTW, I am visiting Brazil again this year. Can't wait!

Absolutely loved your video Chris and Carol!! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Couple of questions did you need a visa to go to Taiwan and did you have to buy a sim card when you got there to get internet on your phone. I notice how helpful google translate can be. Love from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤

Canadian don’t need Visa to come! But yes, you do need to buy SIM card to get internet on your phone. You can buy it in Taiwan Airport. Welcome to Taiwan!

Dumplings are northern China thing. Although very popular in Asia but you shouldn't expect dumplings in every restaurant like rice or noodles.
