In this vlog, we're exploring Tunis, the capital of Tunisia! It's my first time in Tunisia and I'm so excited to be here! We start at Avenue Bourguiba, then head to the Medina of Tunis, and finally we try some traditional Tunisian food.

I visited Tunisia back in 2019 and I fell in love with it. The people are so friendly, the culture is amazing and the food is definitely one of the best cuisines I ever tried. Communication wasn't an obstacle for me because I learned many basic words of standard Arabic from my Lebanese friends here in Brazil. That helped me a lot because all Tunisians can understand and speak standard Arabic. It wasn't hard for me because we actually have many Arabic words in our portuguese language. I also didn't feel like a complete outsider there because in general Tunisians have a sense of humor that's similar to Brazilians. Hope to visit again soon.

I love how they didn't make changes in it and kept the gorgeous Andalusian architecture of the town which symbolizes its history. It gives me peace of mind when I visit it. I am Danish and have visited three times, and each time I discover the splendor of this country. Every time I visit, I feel a strange and pleasant feeling that overwhelms me. I do not know exactly what it is... Tunisia is a country of civilization, diversity, culture and great historical heritage. Unfortunately, the negative point is that there is a lack of interest in it, investment and promotion to the visitor who does not know it. I liked Tunisian food, especially couscous with asabaan and molokhiya. I got used to it and became addicted... Wait for me, Djerba, Mahdia and Sousse, I am coming.

@@arielle-polanski can you explain to me how speaking many languages isn't a fokhra? 😂😂😂 we are underestimating ourselves. An average Tunisian student masters three languages. We cherish Arabic of course and we see it (it really is) as a noble language and we are beyond proud that Arabic is our mother language. But if we are speaking to foreigners how do u expect them to understand us if we don't use a universal language???? I agree that we should hold on to our Arabic but adding several other languages and being open to more civilization ain't a bad thing at all i guess 😅 Les initiatives eli haka lezemna nchaj3ouhom moch nokoodou nlawjou the smallest bémol qui puisse exister f kol chay !

This also meant we had our own personal guides for the entire stay which was a huge plus. Most of the time we spent on the island Djerba but we also went to see the Sahara. We didn't see Tunis, Sfax or any of that area though. I'll definitely be coming back!

I think that the non french architecture in Tunisia (andalusian berberian roman carthagian ) looks better to be honest and still to this day even tho it s way older and was built way long before the french invasion Not on the verge of falling apart unlike the french-looking buildings.

There are some amazing aspects about the Medina. The shopkeepers speak about any language and all languages I know fluently. When the hunt tourists, they also guess the native language of folk passing by and most often correctly. Sometimes they listen in, but I guess they can tell based on clothing or whatever. Quite impressive. The guys are much less gluey than in pure tourist centers, so it's not really painful to walk through the Medina. If you talk to guys they will start showing you around. A visit to the roofs is standard, then you'll be brought to a spices seller, and incents shop, carpets and leather works. Most of the things you find in the Medina are not really interesting, but there are some really nice shops selling olive wood items, some african style lamps and furniture and if you like it a lot of leather works and ceramics. Ceramics are better bought in Nabeul in the outskirts. What I find most interesting is that the Medina combines a couple of parallel realities. There are people just living in the Medina, going to coffee shops, then there is the tourist infrastructure and at the same time a kind of shopping mall where Tunisians living in the vicinity buy their stuff - all in one place. It's more obvious if you see it in different seasons. What Doug describes as a laid back relaxed athmosphere is as far as I see it the most typical aspect of Tunisia. When I moved to Tunis, there were no barriers or military downtown. During the Arab Spring, there was some mild turmoil. I have the impression that people got used to the barricades and nobody thought about whether they are still needed, so they will be there until erosion does its job and the guys standing guard enter retirement. As for the police, I'm not quite sure what they actually do all day long, but they rarely interfere with people. The guys downtown try to look touch and menacing at times, but that's it. Traffic control tries to earn bribes, but if you pretend not to understand they just let you go because you block their space. While they talk to you, cars pass by ignoring the red light, roll over the green strip or speed, nobody really cares about it. Once I parked illegally and when I came back I found a police men guarding my car so that the pick up wouldn't toe it off. He said I wouldn't find the car (he saw my foreign numbr plates). He didn't try to get a bribe and was actually upset when I wanted to give him some money for him being nice. If you get caught by an exceptionally zealous police officer for speeding or passing a red light, you can argue with him that you really need to go home fast so that the takeaway food doesn't get cold and you won't get into trouble with your wife. Chances are good that they will let you go. It's quite funny here. If you are in Tunis, go to La Goulette to eat some fish. The quality is by far not as good as it was 10 years ago and it became a bit price, but the athmosphere is still very nice, especially in the evening. Visit Sidi Bou Said, it's really beautiful, but don't go to the Cafe des delices, that's a tourist trap. Everything else except the shops is really nice. You can always ask people (outside of the medina to evade the standard tour) for restaurants, clubs, bars, coffee shops. The entertainment side of Tunis is not as vivid as what you would find in a western city, but there is a lot of variation and its fun. If you wanted to learn some of the crafts, I would not be surprised if some shopkeepers would let you join for a couple of weeks. Tunisians are generally super friendly (unless you have to do anything related to bureaucracy or phone/internet lines - that's a complete catastrophe).
