I believe there is a beta firmware out currently that you can sign up get access to for the peer-to-peer, however they do also offer custom RTMP destinations... I just am not sure if that requires an internet connection to get working, or if it can be done completely on a local network.
They are streaming directly to RU-vid's RTMP servers, the stream itself isn't going through Atomos Cloud (at the moment anyway). I got RTMP streaming working to my own server (it must be on the internet for some reason, can't be on a private LAN); not sure why custom RTMP is locked away in the web UI, it works for me.

This would be complicated to code for on a live platform, and require a level of programming sophistication that is way above this product's design concept, IMHO. What isn't clear at all is if you must pay for a special Live Streaming unlock key for frame I/O just to do Live RTMP streaming to FaceBook Live ? To my point of view this should be a free feature of the Atomos Connect Device. After all, we paid for this device, and I think it's reasonable to expect some open functionality with our initial purchase.*
Thanks for the review on this. Atomos seems to have wanted to get into streaming since the pandemic switched such tech into high gear. However, they don't seem to be able to make up their mind and /or have lost interest. The NinjaCast can't connect on its own, the Connect has none of the hardware features of the Cast, and the Zato is trying to be both on an amateur scale while not coming anywhere close to the convenience and functionality of the Yolobox. All they needed to do was combine the Cast and the Connect, add in SIM card support, and they could have had real contender at a lower price point (not including price of a Ninja recorder, perhaps) than the Yolo.
Indeed. I haven't seen much happen in terms of cloud or streaming updates from Atomos recently, so I am hoping that it won't wind up being abandoned, but it is hard to say for sure. We do have the NABShow coming up in just over 2 months, which may have some interesting and exciting announcements. Fingers crossed, they have something awesome to release by then!
To be honest im kind of dissatisfied with this Atomos Connect i was expecting more things already working, i have my own few days ago, and in thinking in returning
You have timecode in the Connect, so there is no need for the Sync module. 2 timecode modules would create a conflct in the Ninja. I understand, you would like it just for the battery backup, but that's not the primary function of the Sync module. The handle already was introduced with the AtomX Cast. It's even harder to get the SSD out of that one without it. So it's not something new. Can't you do RTMP directly out of the Connect ? That's a bit daft.
At the moment, the connect doesn't support bluetooth, which is a deficiency between it and the sync modules. This will hopefully be remedied in a firmware update. For people using a bluetooth timecode sync (for instance to an audio recorder), it does leave them having to work around the limitation, or continue using their sync module over the connect device. All said, I do hope that we see relatively continuous releases of firmware updates and cloud studio updates (ideally, on a standard 2 week sprint schedule) coming out of Atomos to fill in the features and make the experience better.
@@CitadelStreaming the bluetooth option not being available is indeed a shortcoming, but I would expect them to fix that. The UltraSync One for example has no bluetooth sync capability at all. Then on the other hand, I've no devices, that support the Atomos / Timecodesync bluetooth sync. TentacleSyncs bluetooth sync is much wider supported, at least from what I've had my fingers on. So i'm always between both timecode systems anyhow.
@@EmeraldAudiovisual it isn’t more widely supported. In fact, it is propriety to tentacle. UltraSync is supported by some zoom recorders and maybe a camera or 2 along with the Atomos.
@@TheMatthewhardy All the bluetooth sync options are proprietary. And TentacleSync's bluetooth protocol is actually used by the InstaMic audio recorder.
I was close to preordering but glad I held off as I was suspicious with some of the promotions they were running and lack of technical details/reviews going in. Glad NDI support is at least on the radar as it wasn't included in the initial announcement but I did notice they were trying to get people to preorder but offering it for free.
I debated about it a while, but I think I will eventually have 3-4 connect devices for some multicam streaming work I am expecting to start doing next year, so I made the jump to see how I like this solution. Get 1 up front, play with it as it grows, and see where it goes; then make the choice to stick with connect devices, or look at a competing/alternative solution
As an update, there is also the recent story that the former CEO was hired and fired after apparently discovering "channel dumping" and other dubious practices. She is now taking Atomos to court and one of the raised issues was shipping units out to distribs with no proper firmware in order to inflate sales figures. Atomos makes great stuff, but their approach to firmware and support has me looking elsewhere. If NAB 2023 reveals some new and truly functional firmware updates, I might change my mind, but am not holding my breath.
Interesting. I hadn't heard about their CEO swapping; though I guess it doesn't surprise me. I'm also looking forward to hopefully having some really awesome news come out of NAB Show 2023, though we will have to wait and see.
The bluetooth sync not working out of the box is definitely a disappointment. I bought the Connect instead of the atomX Sync for the extra features which will obviously be more beneficial over time but you'd think the bluetooth would work out of the box as it is already a feature thats available in the atomX Sync. Atomos if your listening, let get this sorted!
Thanks for the review, I am now kinda "glad" that they lost my V+ recently in their mailroom when I sent it in for service. I don't have to think about using something that is just not ready for prime time. Maybe Ninja 6+ or something else will be bette set for this
Honestly, that doesn't sound like a bad plan so far. They haven't released much of an update yet that I have seen for either the Atomos devices (as a new firmware), or the cloud services, which is a little disappointing as I had hoped to see at least 1 new update in the last month. It definitely sucks that they lost you V+ though. Hopefully they'll make it right. How is your experience with their customer support? I haven't had any dealings with them so far.
I missed it the first time as well, but after I took the antennas out of the box, I noticed that it sounded like there was still something in there, so I pulled up the cardboard and sure enough, there was more content. So far I have been really happy with the amount of thought Atomos puts in to their products - they make it really painless to get a new module or product, even if it isn't fully backwards compatible.
That should work for the Zato Connect, but the Atomos Connect (that connects to the Ninja V and V+) doesn't have a USB port (power delivery, or otherwise), nor a power delivery port (which the Shogun Connect has).
I'm glad you found it helpful. I truly hope that they resolve all of the problems with the Connect devices and make them amazing in the near future (and will reserve final judgement based on some firmware updates that I hope happen, as the shortcomings so far are all software related), but software takes time, so it may be a while until they get everything finalized there (especially with the split focus on their cloud services).
@@CitadelStreaming Looking forward to your update on the new firmware, when it is released. I have mixed feelings for Atomos. Their products are usually awesome, but often let down by their software, which can take years to catch up. Case in point is my Ninja V, which was clipping the audio with firmware 10.81. When I raised a problem ticket, they told me it was a known problem and I should go back to 10.73. What the hell, Batman? they have been releasing updates in the full knowledge that the audio had a fatal issue? It was finally fixed in 10.84, but WTF! I'll have to wait until Atomos Connect actually works, before considering a purchase.
Yeah, I am excited about it, but sadly won't be able to start testing it yet - I don't have a second Connect device, which I believe is required. (if I am wrong, please let me know!)
