:) :) Collective Soul!! Very excited that you're going to do more reactions to them! They were one of my favorite 90s bands! Great reaction, Daniel. :)
The music throughout the song is somber, but haven't heard anyone comment on the strings at the end...very uplifting vibe to it...perfect ending to the songs message. As corny as it sounds, this song was playing as I drove through my new home of Atlanta. While certainly not in a desperate frame of mind, was still sad leaving everything I knew behind. The uplifting strings at the end made me feel excitement and hope, like everything will be okay...25 years later, things are very okay
"Shine" was Collective Soul's other big hit of note. In a similar vein: Toad the Wet Sprocket (anything off Fear; "Come Down," "Come Back Down" - yes, they're two different songs; the video for "Something's Always Wrong" adds a really interesting layer), Counting Crows ("Einstein on the Beach," "Mr. Jones," "A Murder of One"). Early-days BNL comes adjacent, especially the likes of "What a Good Boy."
This song hits hard home, I’ve been to the edge this year but instead of a bird there’re my children, my only friend, my mom and dad that pulled me out of the moments of despair regardless of them knowing that I have to learn that this is the world I know, still, can’t get it down without crying. Thank you Dan.
Post-grunge band that I really loved. Haven’t heard them in a good while. “Shine” and especially “December” are two songs I love, the world loves, and I’m certain you will. Even if you don’t react to them, please listen to those. You will be happy you took the few minutes to know just a bit more from Collective Soul.
I just saw Collective Soul a few days ago (my 3rd time). Wow, just wow. Deep catalog of hits from the 90s. You gotta check out "Shine" or "Heavy" as some of their more heavy sound.
One of my favorites, under-reacted and underappreciated imo. Many great songs- December, Heavy, Run, Shine, Better Now, AYTA, Under Heaven's Skies, Smashing Young Man, Needs, Gel. Some emotional, some bangers, many combos of both.
My brother once described them as having consistently catchy guitar hooks on their many hit songs in the 90s and on. This is pretty mellow compared to many of their songs. I have liked them since I heard Shine and always liked the album title that Shine is from- Hints and allegations and things left unsaid.
CS did an entire album live with Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra back around 2005 that is a must hear/see collaboration. Those kids knocked it out of the park with CS. You can catch the entire concert(wonderfully edited) broken into each song.
It is a really cool song. Collective Soul has a lot of really cool songs. They've been around for about 30 years, and they are criminally underrated in my opinion. I hope you go down their rabbit hole, it's really deep and I think you'll like it.
Great band from Georgia! I got you with the Goo Goo Dolls! When I heard this for the first time , I was out on a balcony looking out at the ocean. He sings of stepping to the edge to see his world below. You see your reality good and bad. The guy in the video seems to want to end his life but he sees joy in a bird. He threw the money away for it wasn't what he needed to be happy.
If it almost makes you cry than you know about friends or people in crises ..... and a Dove lands on his arm which represents "Love" and "Hope" and he knows Life is not so bad and he does not take his life......This Rock group of the 90's were the most underrated rock bands of the 90's.....great deep songs and musicianship.
Oh yeah, I went through a Collective Soul phase (Just after my Live phase)...I had the biggest crush on the bassist Will Turpin. They played one of my first concerts - a radio mix show of current pop stars of the time. Their big song is SHINE - it's so good! Ed's voice is so powerful!
Nice to see you touching on Collective Soul. You need to dive a bit deeper for songs like Precious Declaration, December, Heavy, Disciplined Breakdown, Smashing Young Man, Gel and Shine. They carry an overt Christian theme in a lot of their songs that I'm sure you will easily find
This is one of the bands I listen to done lots of great songs I’d give you a list but it would be too long but I’ll try anyway iIGNORE the song shine that everyone suggests go for their later stuff much better shine is overrated has a great lead but was only popular as people were into grunge at the time it’s rather very boring Here’s a list for you Heavy Generate COMPLIMENT Slow DANDY LIFE Boast Turn Around After All Happiness Vent Why Pt.2 Energy Next Homecoming Better now There’s a way HOME FEELS LIKE (it feels alright) Counting the days New Vibration What can I give you Never here alone I do t need anymore friends Persuasion if you Welcome again Dig My Days Love Nows the Time Over me RIGHT AS RAIN Observation of thoughts Porch Swing Opera star There that’s all you need to look into for now the list is oldest songs at the top ending up with their latest release in 2020 I suggest you listen to them and add some to your own playlist Yet again IGNORE SHINE ITS NOT THAT GOOD AND THEIR MUSIC IS SO MUCH BETTER NOW oops left caps on again!!!!
Collective Soul have MANY great songs. My favourite album of theirs is their second from 1995 simply called 'Collective Soul'. That's where this particular song comes from, but there are at least 5 other songs on the album worthy of a reaction. There is also live footage worth checking out of the band playing with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, of which portions can be found on youtube. I own the concert DVD and it's a really fantastic concert. If I'm not mistaken the band went through heavy legal hassles with their record company at a certain point and just seemed to fade out of public consciousness. But they seem to be touring again, which is good because they were awesome when I saw them back in the late 90s.
Great reaction, Daniel! I really liked Collective Soul's first 2 albums - enough that I actually purchased the CDs - and during that period, I rarely spent money on then-current music. I also like Goo Goo Dolls a lot!
I just noticed that the video was without much shades until the dove lands on his arm. He opens his eyes and everything got in colour. What a great video. 😭
If you are human this song along with video hits you in your soul. Somehow on a human level you can relate. The business man likely has a well paying job, but all the suffering happening around him makes him feel hopeless, then he reads the paper with more bad news and he cant take the emotional stress any longer so he decides he will leave this world. Then teh bird lands on him as if its a sign for him to reconsider and then he sees how the bird eats the crumbs and the ants eat the crumbs of the bird and he looks below at the poeple and likens to ants and how even though it seems hopeless they each have a role. So he steps back and reconsiders.
He sees that the people below on the streets are no different really than busy ants always rushing around to fix and rebuild, stressing and working and going thru the motions and taking it all too seriously when really peace of mind is more important.
A criminally underrated band - one of the best of the 90s. The self-titled "Collective Soul" album is one of the best albums of all time. Yes, seriously. Thank you for your honest reaction with no pretense.
You asked for recommendations for additional Collective Soul songs. This is one I ignored for way too long. I didn’t like the beginning, typical shallow 25 year old, so skipped it. Older and yes, no wiser, but at least I listen to songs through. “Forgiveness” is an amazing song. There is a bridge here that is an absolute masterpiece.
I think you'd really enjoy going down the rabbit hole with Our Lady Peace (I think "Is Anybody Home is a good introduction) and The Nixon's ("Gabriel" is a deep ass cut, but I think you'd love it, "Sister" or "Baton Rouge" are definitely better for the channel though).
Great reaction video. Really enjoyed this. I believe this song stayed number 1 on the rock singles for 12 or 13 weeks. I was wondering what ur reaction would be when it appeared he was falling off the building..so many people have the same facial expression that u did when seeing this video for the first time. Love ur channel!
Daniel, give a listen and react to another song about being suicidal. That song is called “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind. A powerful song. An emotional song. I hope you will. This was an emotional song for me. Great reaction. Thank you Daniel.
I've seen them a couple of times. They always put on a great show. They did a cover of Pink Floyd's Mother that was extraordinary. BTW, they are from Stockbridge so we are all practically neighbors.
So very nice to see another generation discover our music. I came of age with this music was the soundtrack to our lives. I have watched many, many reaction videos on several channels and although your youth is showing,, I just gotta say I like to see your intelligence. Most of the others are nice but rather lacking in that department. Also LOVE that you are a child of the King, as I. Keep up the good work, brother. Watching and loving it from a big fan in Gatlinburg, TN.
Was looking for reactions to this band. They were bubbling under the surface. Great songs, catchy songs. This is, as others have stated, more mellow. They have some really heavy grooves on other tunes. Knowing your love of riffs, please check out... Better Now - great hooks/riffs. Perfectly crafted song. Heavy - perfect title for this song. Heavy riffs. Gets you moving. Shine - first song that I heard from them. YEAH. I was hooked, pardon the pun.
You probably recognize the chorus because it has been used in some commercials. As others have posted, "Shine" is one of their best known songs. Another commenter also mentioned "Toad the Wet Sprocket", a similar '90s Alternative Rock band. If you liked "The World I Know", then you should check out Toad's song "Windmills"; it has the same chill, melancholy feel.
Daniel, great reaction and I think it has the same effect on anyone who listens to it. I know it did me. Great comments by your followers and I agree you must at least listen to "Shine" and "December" next by them. On another note, you should listen to a song called "Mad World" sung by Adam Lambert. Adam is now the front man for Queen and does an admirable job. No one can fill Freddie Mercury's shoes, but I don't think Queen could have selected a better performer. Adam was runner up in 2009 on American Idol. Here is the link to the studio version of his version of "Mad World": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-euNmWyPmBxg.html If you're interested in hearing the original artist's version, here is the link to Gary Jules's song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZUtAe5PUKtE.html
For me, a story of perspective and the chain of life. You do matter. Ed Roland (singer) and his brother Dean (guitar) are sons of a southern preacher. You can hear a spiritual slant. Shine and Run are both great songs from Collective Soul.
Interesting you talk about the song Iris, because that was a court case between the two bands. Goo goo dolls toke them to court, until CS proved this song was written before Goo goo dolls.
Great band. I remember Beavis & Butt-Head tried to trash these guys and after a minute Beavis goes,”I don’t know Butt-Head, these guys are pretty awesome “
Walk up on high, the world below. We are the one word or collective soul, sending ourselves the dove unconsciously, feed it the bagel, which crumbs feed the ants, looking below realizing we are just like the ants when looked at from our higher consciousness. Throwing the bagel down feeding other ants and feeding himself with his higher self. We are bleeding to be one consciousness.
And then a week later your back to feeling awful. bipolar emotions are so horrible to deal with. Just breathe and chill its not the end of the world your gonna be fine. Take a break and relax once in a while no one will judge you.
if you watch the vid, the dude is surrounded by bad things, homelessness, sad people, bad things in the paper going to pollution and im guessing his job was also bad he was so despondent that he walked up to the building and was about to end his pain and then life should him that life was worth living the birds, ants and he didnt care about his money anymore he just threw it away
They have so many good songs but a couple that I think would make good reactions are “Blame” and “Needs.” One of my favorite songs is “December” but I wouldn’t recommend doing that one as a reaction. The lyrics can be taken a couple of different ways. But, as always, you are free to choose what to react to. :)
Lol i adore Collective Soul and I’m sure youve heard the chorus not realizing it.. they have a more MSM song called Shine you’d more likely have heard.. and yes.. the band name is accurately fitting. I had never actually seen the video myself.. and i had always just interpreted it as the second half of exhiliration of recognizing life as part of it and certainly worth living.. especially with the “laugh to myself”.. so ironically, i always envisioned this song as pure hope and just self awareness to be able to still laugh during hard moments.. btw the guy saw the ants begin eating the bread he trickled to the birds.. then when he saw the parallel to the people below, he began laughing and throwing slices of bread. Having a private laugh.. you looked so concerned at first it made me nervous bc i hadnt seen it either lol so i was praying the song delivered its lyrics.. and it did.. check out Shine, if you liked Collective Soul. I think you’d like it.. ❤️🧚🏻♀️
